Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Sexual Concerns During Perimenopause: A Four Session Study Protocol.

Background: During the menopausal transition, women often experience physical (e.g., vasomotor symptoms) and emotional (e.g., anxiety and depression) difficulties that significantly impact functioning and overall quality of life. Although sexual concerns (e.g., decreased sexual desire, orgasm), are reported by up to 87% of peri- and post-menopausal women, and are associated with adverse impact on functioning and distress, treatment options that directly target this area are limited, and most often involve medication (e.g., hormone replacement). Effectiveness of these treatments is often define

Results from a randomized clinical trial of a digital depression treatment on anxiety symptoms: Empirical support for the generic cognitive model.

The Generic Cognitive Model provides a theoretical framework for understanding common clinical mechanisms in psychopathology. To our knowledge, no research exists on the effects of digital treatments on common clinical mechanisms and outcomes for depressive and anxiety disorders. We analyzed the treatment effects and clinical mechanisms of a text-message delivered major depressive disorder treatment (named CBT-txt, which is efficacious in treating depression) on generalized anxiety disorder symptoms with 103 young adults. Using data from a 3-month randomized clinical trial, a repeated measures

Family meals and behavioral development: The role of feeding strategies and mealtime emotional climate.

This study explores the associations between consistent family mealtime schedules, parental and child control of food intake at 24 months, and children's internalizing and externalizing (EXT) symptoms at 36 months. Data were drawn from an observational cohort of 300 parent-child dyads, with analyses conducted on 270 families for whom complete data were available. Using both observational assessments and caregiver reports, we examined whether mealtime consistency and feeding strategies predicted internalizing and EXT symptoms, with the family's emotional climate during mealtimes as a potential

Physical exercise moderates the mediating effect of depressive symptoms between sleep quality and suicidal ideation among college students.

Sleep quality is critical for suicidality or psychological well-being in any cohort. However, the underlying psychological and behavioral mechanisms linking these factors remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated the association between sleep quality and suicidal ideation, exploring the mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating effect of physical exercise in this relationship. A cross-sectional survey was conducted across six universities in Guangdong Province using the stratified sampling method. Variables were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality

Hippocampal subregion volumes and preadolescent depression risk in the ABCD sample.

The hippocampus is central in the pathophysiology of depression. Subregions of the hippocampus (head, body, tail) have been implicated in adult depression, though research examining depression and hippocampal subregions in youth has been limited. This study aimed to examine associations between preadolescent hippocampal subregions and depression risk as well as their interactions with factors associated with depression risk, including biological sex and socioeconomic status (SES). Hippocampal subregions were extracted from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study baseline sample (N

Prevalence of dry eye disease symptoms and impact on quality-of-life among hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This cross-sectional study was conducted among hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic to assess the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) symptoms, associated risk factors, and their impact on quality-of-life (QOL). Data were collected via an internet-based survey at a tertiary care hospital from February to June 2022. Participants completed the Thai version of the Dry Eye-related Quality of Life Score (DEQS-Th) to identify DED symptoms, and measures of general QOL and mental health were evaluated using the EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Levels (EQ-5D-5L) and Thymometer questionnaires. Of the 1,250

Associations between cortical thickness and anxious/depressive symptoms differ by the quality of early care.

A variety of childhood experiences can lead to anxious/depressed (A/D) symptoms. The aim of the present study was to explore the brain morphological (cortical thickness and surface area) correlates of A/D symptoms and the extent to which these phenotypes vary depending on the quality of the parenting context in which children develop. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were acquired on 45 children with Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement due to risk of not receiving adequate care (high-risk group) and 25 children without CPS involvement (low-risk group) (rangeage = 8.08-

[Progression of symptoms in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in treatment with methylphenidate].

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder frequent in childhood. The main symptoms are attention disorder and/or impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. There are different subtypes of ADHD according to the degree of presence of these three symptoms. There are different therapeutic approaches with high proved effectiveness. Methylphenidate, a stimulant that acts through the dopaminergic and adrenergic pathways, is commonly used for the treatment of ADHD. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioural screening instrument internationa

Factors associated with depression and anxiety symptoms among children seeking treatment for obesity: A social-ecological approach.

BACKGROUND: Children with overweight/obesity are more likely to exhibit symptoms of depression and anxiety than are their peers without overweight/obesity; however, the rates and correlates of depression and anxiety symptoms among children seeking obesity treatment remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: Examine the prevalence and associated factors of depression and anxiety symptoms among treatment-seeking children with overweight/obesity. METHODS: Children 7 to 11 years old (N = 241) and their parents completed assessments before beginning family-based behavioral weight-loss treatment. Disorder-specif

Linking phencyclidine intoxication to the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway: Therapeutic implications for schizophrenia.

Phencyclidine (PCP) is a dissociative anesthetic that induces psychotic symptoms and neurocognitive deficits in rodents similar to those observed in schizophrenia patients. PCP administration in healthy human subjects induces schizophrenia-like symptoms such as positive and negative symptoms, and a range of cognitive deficits. It has been reported that PCP, ketamine, and related drugs such as N-methyl-D-aspartate-type (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonists, induce behavioral effects by blocking neurotransmission at NMDA receptors. Further, NMDA receptor antagonists reproduce specific aspects of

Controlled Rhythmic Yogic Breathing as Complementary Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Military Veterans: A Case Series.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a cluster of symptoms in which a person persistently relives a traumatic event, through recurring thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks for at least 1 month or more. There are various behavioral and medical treatment options for PTSD. Mind-body techniques, such as biofeedback and breathing-based stress reduction, have shown some promise in the treatment of PTSD symptoms. The purpose of this case series was to examine controlled yogic breathing as a complementary treatment of PTSD in military veterans. A retrospective review was performed from

The effect of vocal fold augmentation on cough symptoms in the presence of glottic insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of injection augmentation of the vocal folds on chronic cough symptoms in patients with glottic insufficiency. METHODS: Medical records from 146 consecutive patients who underwent vocal fold injection augmentation by a fellowship-trained laryngologist between 2013 and 2015 were reviewed. Twenty-three patients (12 male) met inclusion criteria of a vocal fold augmentation injection, cough symptoms lasting more than 8 weeks, and glottic insufficiency as determined by shortened closed phase on stroboscopy. Exclusion criteria included lack of cough complaints, di

CBT for Child PTSD is Associated with Reductions in Maternal Depression: Evidence for Bidirectional Effects.

Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques are empirically supported for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in youth, but the role of parents in such treatments is less clear. Theoretically there may be a reciprocal relationship such that as children improve, their parents may feel better, and conversely as parents feel better, psychologically the child may improve or improve at a greater rate. This study tested if there were indirect effects of change in child PTSD symptoms on change in parent depression symptoms, and vice versa, across treatment sessions. The data came from a randomized trial

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: From parents to children.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple studies of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have recognised a heritability factor in that a higher frequency of the disorder is observed in children with an affected relative. Our aim was to determine the association between ADHD symptoms in young children enrolled in five schools in Bogota and a history of ADHD symptoms in their parents using the Wender-Utah Rating Scale. METHODOLOGY: Case-control study of participants selected according to DSM-IV criteria for ADHD and the Behavioral Assessment System for Children (BASC) completed by parents and teachers

Safety, efficacy, actions, and patient acceptability of drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol contraceptive pills in the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is estimated to affect 3%-8% of reproductive age women. Multiple therapeutic modalities have been evaluated with varying efficacy for the associated somatic and mood symptoms. The majority of older studies had shown that oral contraceptive pills (OCs) were most effective for the physical symptoms. However, newer OCs containing a novel progestin, drospirenone, have shown promise in alleviating both the somatic and affective/behavioral symptoms. This progestin, which is a derivative of spironolactone, has both antimineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic activi…

Sex-Based Differences in Autism Symptoms in a Large, Clinically-Referred Sample of Preschool-Aged Children with ASD.

Previous research has identified possible sex-based differences in restricted and repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, this finding is mixed, particularly among preschool-aged children. We investigated the presence of sex-based differences in parent-rated ASD symptomatology, using the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (ASRS). Participants consisted of a large (n = 481,100 female), clinically-referred sample of preschoolers (ages 2-5) diagnosed with ASD (NVIQ: M = 67.11, SD = 21.79). Females had less severe symptoms on the Total, Unusual Behaviors, DSM-5, and Stereotypy s

Advances in the pharmacological management of obsessive-compulsive disorder in the postpartum period.

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are defined as intrusive, recurrent and distressing thoughts, images or impulses, whereas compulsions are defined as repetitive behaviors or mental acts. While there is an associated distress, and indeed oftentimes, the individual's awareness that these behaviors are excessive and unreasonable, the individual continues to be disabled by an inability to cease their compulsions. The postpartum period may herald the onset of OCD or precipitate an exacerbation of the

[Body Dysmorphic Disorder - Balance between Beauty Mania and Illness].

Body Dysmorphic Disorder - Balance between Beauty Mania and Illness Abstract. The body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) belongs to the somatoform disorders and is characterized by an excessive concern about a slight or not apparent defect in appearance. Typical areas of concern include the face, for example the skin texture or form and symmetry of a particular feature. Besides behavioral pecularities such as excessive checking of the defect in a mirror, the preoccupation causes clinically significant distress and impairment in social functioning. Given a prevalence of up to 20 % among patients seekin
