INTRODUCTION: Blastocystis sp. is a protozoan that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of humans and many animals and is currently the most common parasite found in human stools. In some developing countries, its prevalence in study populations may exceed 50%. Morphologically, isolates of Blastocystis sp. found in different hosts are very similar. However, these same isolates show a very high genetic diversity between them and no less than 17 subtypes (or genotypes) have already been identified from molecular data. Genotyping studies have been carried out in many countries around the world an

BACKGROUND: Apgar scores measure newborn health and are strongly associated with infant outcomes, but their performance has largely been determined in primarily white populations. Given the majority of the global population is not white, we aim to assess whether the association between low Apgar score and mortality in infants varies across racial groups.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Population-based cohort study using 2016 to 2017 United States National Vital Statistics System data. The study included singleton infants born between 37+0 and 44+6 weeks to mothers over 15 years, without congenital abn

OBJECTIVE: To compare risks of adverse birth outcomes among pregnancies conceived with and without medically assisted reproduction treatments.
METHODS: Birth certificates were used to study birth outcomes of all neonates born in Utah from 2009 through 2017. Of the 469,919 deliveries, 52.8% (N=248,013) were included in the sample, with 5.2% of the neonates conceived through medically assisted reproduction. The outcome measures included birth weight, gestational age, low birth weight (LBW, less than 2,500 g), preterm birth (less than 37 weeks of gestation), and small for gestational age (SGA, b

BACKGROUND: Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) in the United States die much earlier than those without CP, a health inequality likely shaped by causes of death. Existing research has not considered demographic differences in mortality patterns.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze differences in cause of death for adults who did/did not have CP reported on their death certificates and to assess sex and racial-ethnic difference in causes of death among adult decedents with CP.
METHODS: Data are from the 2013-2017 US Multiple Cause of Death Mortality files (N = 13,332,871; n = 13,897 with CP). Multiple logist

BACKGROUND: A recently developed obstetrical comorbidity scoring system enables the comparison of severe maternal morbidity rates independent of health status at the time of birth hospitalization. However, the scoring system has not been evaluated in racial-ethnic and socioeconomic groups or used to assess disparities in severe maternal morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of an obstetrical comorbidity scoring system when applied across racial-ethnic and socioeconomic groups and to determine the effect of comorbidity score risk adjustment on disparities in severe

The study analysed the trend of toxoplasmosis infection in pregnancy by using antenatal serological screening and the incidence of the congenital condition in newborns in the province of Trento, Italy. Data from pregnant women who gave birth at local maternity units between 2009 and 2018 were obtained. The serological test results were collected from birth attendance certificates (BACs), the main - and mandatory - source of information used to monitor pregnancies, births and neonatal health in Italy. The BAC used in the province of Trento acquires the results of serological tests for a vast ra

BACKGROUND: Whether HIV infection is associated with risk of death due to COVID-19 is unclear. We aimed to investigate this association in a large-scale population-based study in England.
METHODS: We did a retrospective cohort study. Working on behalf of NHS England, we used the OpenSAFELY platform to analyse routinely collected electronic primary care data linked to national death registrations. We included all adults (aged ≥18 years) alive and in follow-up on Feb 1, 2020, and with at least 1 year of continuous registration with a general practitioner before this date. People with a primary

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth has been known to be associated with particulate matter (PM) air pollution during gestation. Given that regular working may deviate outdoor air pollution exposure, the association between air pollution and fetal growth restriction can be different across maternal working status. This study was to assess possible effect modification by maternal employment in the association between exposure to PM during pregnancy and fetal growth restriction.
METHODS: Using hourly PM less than or equal to 10 and 2.5 μm in diameter (PM10 and PM2.5) regulatory monitoring data for 2001-20

We aimed to identify the incidence and types of neonatal birth fractures in a single tertiary maternity hospital in the United Kingdom and to find possible associated factors, including all live births born between 2000 and 2016. We reviewed hospital records and imaging of all neonates who had any imaging done to identify birth fractures. We identified 87,461 consecutive live births. Sixty-six sustained a fracture during delivery: 46 clavicle-, 13 humerus-, four skull-, one femoral-, one rib- and one tibial fracture. Five neonates with a clavicle or humeral fracture had an Erb's palsy. Sixty-f

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status and individual nutrients have been associated with frailty in older adults. The extent to which these associations hold in younger people, by type of malnutrition or grades of frailty, is unclear. Our objectives were to (1) evaluate the relationship between individual nutrition-related parameters and frailty, (2) investigate the association between individual nutrition-related parameters and mortality across frailty levels, and (3) examine whether combining nutrition-related parameters in an index predicts mortality risk across frailty levels.

Most prior studies examining maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) in relation to offspring autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have reported an association, though findings are not uniform and few have also examined gestational weight gain (GWG). Therefore, we examined both in the Study to Explore Early Development, a multi-site case-control study of children born in 2003-2006. Children identified from clinics, schools, and birth certificates were enrolled at ages 2-5 year and using standardized developmental evaluations, classified as: ASD, other developmental delays (DD), or population-b

BACKGROUND: Previous studies support an association between elevated total homocysteine (tHcy) levels and increased all-cause mortality. However, few prospective studies have examined this association in hypertensive patients, and/or tested any effect modification by the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotype.
METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. Serum tHcy and folate were measured at baseline. Individual MTHFR C677T genotype (CC, CT, and TT) was determined. Evidence for death included death certificates or home visits. Cumul

BACKGROUND: Short birth-to-pregnancy intervals have been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Racial disparities in short birth-to-pregnancy intervals and adverse perinatal outcomes are also well known. However, little is known about birth-to-pregnancy intervals among African-born black women in the US and risk factors that contribute to short birth-to-pregnancy intervals in this population.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk and associated risk factors of short birth-to-pregnancy intervals among African-born black women in Washington State.

OBJECTIVES: Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) is a major contributor to overall preterm birth (PTB) rates. A short interpregnancy interval (IPI) is a well-known risk factor for PTB. It is unknown if a short IPI specifically affects the risk of developing PPROM in a subsequent pregnancy. We sought to determine the association between IPI and the risk of PPROM in a subsequent pregnancy.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the Missouri birth certificate database of singleton births from 2003 to 2013 was conducted. A short IPI (delivery of the prior pregnancy to conception of
