The youngest are hit hardest: The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hospitalization rate for children, adolescents, and young adults with anorexia nervosa in a large German representative sample.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the mental health of children and adolescents. Young people at risk for anorexia nervosa (AN) have been especially shown to be affected. There are no studies that have investigated the respective proportions of hospitalized children, adolescents, and young adults separately as well as of both sexes during the COVID-19 crisis. METHODS: This study is based on the administrative data of the largest German statutory health insurance. All children (0-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 years) with a discharge diagnosis of typical and atypical AN

Positive antithyroid antibody predicts severity of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in children.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disease, which can coexist with autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDS). There has been no report on the clinical characteristics of NMOSD in children with positive anti-thyroid antibodies (ATAbs). The aim of this study is to evaluate thyroid function and detect the difference between ATAbs seropositive and seronegative NMOSD children. METHODS: 108 children with a confirmed diagnosis of NMOSD who were admitted to Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from January 2015 to September 2020 were enrolled and their

Geospatial Analysis of Social Determinants of Health Identifies Neighborhood Hot Spots Associated With Pediatric Intensive Care Use for Life-Threatening Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health are associated with asthma prevalence and healthcare use in children with asthma, but are multifactorial and complex. Whether social determinants similarly influence exacerbation severity is not clear. OBJECTIVE: Composite measures of social determinants of health and readmission outcomes were evaluated in a large regional cohort of 1,403 school-age children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for asthma. METHODS: Residential addresses were geocoded and spatially joined to census tracts. Composite measures of social vulnerability and c

Acute Flaccid Myelitis: A Single Pediatric Center Experience From 2014 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Acute flaccid myelitis has emerged as the leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis in children. Acute flaccid myelitis leads to significant physical disability; hence, objective outcome measures to study disease severity and progression are desirable. In addition, nerve transfer to improve motor function in affected children needs further study. METHODS: Retrospective study of acute flaccid myelitis subjects managed at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta from August 2014 to December 2019. Clinical, electromyography and nerve conduction study, neuropsychological functional independenc

Environmental Burden of Childhood Disease in Europe.

Background: Environmental factors determine children's health. Quantifying the health impacts related to environmental hazards for children is essential to prioritize interventions to improve health in Europe. Objective: This study aimed to assess the burden of childhood disease due to environmental risks across the European Union. Methods: We conducted an environmental burden of childhood disease assessment in the 28 countries of the EU (EU28) for seven environmental risk factors (particulate matter less than 10 micrometer of diameter (PM10) and less than 2.5 micrometer of diameter (PM2.5), o

Sociocultural Considerations in Juvenile Arthritis: A Review.

PROBLEM: Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is one of the most common autoimmune diseases in children. A variety of sociocultural factors that influence health outcomes in children with JA have been examined in previous research. However, clinical guidelines to guide the care of these children lack support because this research has not been systematically examined and synthesized. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Primary research articles from five internet databases were included if they were peer-reviewed articles in English of studies conducted in the U.S. or Canada and referenced one or more determinants of he

Quadracel: Vaccination Against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, and Poliomyelitis in Children.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccinations in school-aged children are required by state and local law to maintain high vaccination coverage rates, as well as low rates of vaccine-preventable diseases. Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis are childhood diseases that can be life threatening; poliomyelitis, another childhood disease, can be disabling. In turn, vaccinations were developed to provide protection against these diseases. Today, several vaccinations are recommended for children, including but not limited to diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) and poliomyelitis (IPV). DTaP requires five doses, and

Natural history and clinical implications of nondepressed skull fracture in young children.

BACKGROUND: Head injury is the most common cause of neurologic disability and mortality in children. Previous studies have demonstrated that depressed skull fractures (SFs) represent approximately one quarter of all SFs in children and approximately 10% percent of hospital admissions after head injury. We hypothesized that nondepressed SFs (NDSFs) in children are not associated with adverse neurologic outcomes. METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for all children 5 years or younger with SFs who presented to our Level I trauma center during a 4-year period. Data collected included patient d

How common are motor problems in children with a developmental disorder: rule or exception?

BACKGROUND: Few co-morbidity studies have been conducted since the Leeds Consensus Statement on developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) in 2006. In this Statement, international cut-offs and inclusion criteria were agreed and consequently, the status of DCD changed. Furthermore, most existing co-morbidity studies are small clinical studies, rather than epidemiological studies, resulting in a broad range of co-morbidity rates. DCD has a higher incidence for boys in comparison with girls; questions arise if this preponderance remains the same in combination with other developmental disorders.

Understanding work-related injuries in children: a perspective in West Virginia using the state-managed workers' compensation system.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Little data exist that defines the consequences of occupational injuries in children. Traditional assessment of work-related injury is coupled with disability payments based on salary, which give little insight into etiology and severity. The authors hypothesize that the risk and pattern of occupational injuries in young workers are different then adults. METHODS: Claims from 1996 through 2000 were analyzed from the West Virginia Bureau of Workers Compensation. To define the significance of an injury, child and adult groups were subdivided into injuries that required surge

Executive function in parents of children with autism.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that individuals with autism show impaired performance on tests of executive function (Ozonoff et al. 1991, 1993; Hughes & Russell, 1993; Hughes et al. 1994). There is also strong evidence for genetic involvement in autism (see Rutter, 1991 for review). If executive dysfunction is a core impairment in autism, then similar impairments are hypothesized to exist in a subtler form among the parents of autistic children. METHODS: Forty parents of autistic children were compared with 40 parents of learning disabled children and 36 adults from unaffected famil

Developmental Associations between Cognition and Adaptive Behavior in Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are associated with both cognitive challenges and difficulties in conceptual, social, and practical areas of living (DSM-5). Individuals with IDD often present with an intellectual disability in addition to a developmental disability such as autism or Down syndrome. Those with IDD may present with deficits in intellectual functioning as well as adaptive functioning that interfere with independence and living skills. The present study sought to examine associations of longitudinal developmental change in domains of cognition (NIH To

Neurocognitive Profiles of Pediatric Patients with ESES, Generalized Epilepsy, or Focal Epilepsy.

To date, the neurocognitive profile and comorbid psychiatric risks associated with ESES, a syndrome that commonly coincides with a seizure disorder, in contrast to generalized or partial/focal epilepsy without ESES remains unclear. Accordingly, this preliminary study aimed to characterize the neurocognitive differences across pediatric patients with ESES, generalized or focal epilepsy, and risk for comorbid diagnoses (mood disorder, autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, ADHD). We included data from a total of 79 pediatric patients, including those with recently diagnosed ESES (

Burns in Baghdad from 2003 to 2014: Results of a randomized household cluster survey.

PURPOSE: Civilians living amid conflict are at high-risk of burns. However, the epidemiology of burns among this vulnerable group is poorly understood, yet vital for health policy and relief planning. To address this gap, we aimed to determine the death and disability, healthcare needs and household financial consequences of burns in post-invasion Baghdad. METHODS: A two-stage, cluster randomized, community-based household survey was performed in May 2014 to determine the civilian burden of injury from 2003 to 2014 in Baghdad. In addition to questions about cause of household member death, ho

Social attention and social-emotional modulation of attention in Angelman syndrome: an eye-tracking study.

Individuals with Angelman syndrome (AS) present with severe intellectual disability alongside a social phenotype characterised by social communication difficulties and an increased drive for social engagement. As the social phenotype in this condition is poorly understood, we examined patterns of social attention and social modulation of attention in AS. Twenty-four individuals with AS and twenty-one young children with similar mental age were shown videos featuring unfamiliar actors who performed simple actions across two conditions: a playful condition, in which the actor showed positive fac
