A brief communication of patients with homozygous C282Y mutation-related hereditary hemochromatosis.

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an autosomal recessive inherited iron-loading disorder and is characterized by chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, diabetes, and bronze skin. The hemochromatosis gene (C282Y homozygosity)-related hemochromatosis is the most common form of HH. The prevalence of HH is varied. Here, we defined six cases with C282Y homozygosity-related HH in a single center in Turkiye.

Short communication: Can Vitamin D be supplied from the large intestine?

The discovery that vitamin D2 is being generated by anaerobic microbial metabolism in the alimentary tract, raises the question whether such a source of vitamin D could contribute to vitamin D supply for the animal hosting this microbial production system. In ruminants, this microbial generation in the forestomach allows vitamin D2 to be readily absorbed when it reaches the small intestine, contributing to vitamin D2 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 [25(OH)D2] found in their tissues. In monogastric animals like humans, the microbial generation of vitamin D2 is occurring in the large intestine. There i

Communication between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis: Focusing on exosomes.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic hepatic disorder on a global scale. Atherosclerosis (AS), a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases, stands as the primary contributor to mortality among patients diagnosed with NAFLD. However, the precise etiology by which NAFLD causes AS remains unclear. Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles secreted by cells, and are considered to participate in complex biological processes by promoting cell-to-cell and organ-to-organ communications. As vesicles containing protein, mRNA, non-coding RNA and other bioactive molecu

Effects of white colony-forming yeast on microbial communities and metabolites in kimchi.

White colony-forming yeast (WCFY) forms white colonies on kimchi during fermentation, causing off-flavors and quality deterioration, which are significantly damaging to kimchi industry. To study its impact, kimchi samples were inoculated with representative WCFYs (Candida sake, Debaryomyces hansenii, Kazachstania servazzii, and Pichia kudriavzevii) and monitored for 50 days at 15 °C using high-throughput DNA sequencing and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Dominant bacteria at the end of fermentation were Companilactobacillus and Latilactobacillus in the control and WCFY-inoculated samples

Microbial community storm dynamics signal sources of "old" stream water.

Accurate characterization of the movement of water through catchments, particularly during precipitation event response, is critical for hydrological efforts such as contaminant transport modeling or prediction of extreme flows. Abiotic hydrogeochemical tracers are commonly used to track sources and ages of surface waters but provide limited details about transit pathways or the spatial dynamics of water storage and release. Alternatively, biotic material in streams is derived from thousands of taxa originating from a variety of environments within watersheds, including groundwater, sediment,

The complexity of extracellular vesicles: Bridging the gap between cellular communication and neuropathology.

Brain-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) serve a prominent role in maintaining homeostasis and contributing to pathology in health and disease. This review establishes a crucial link between physiological processes leading to EV biogenesis and their impacts on disease. EVs are involved in the clearance and transport of proteins and nucleic acids, responding to changes in cellular processes associated with neurodegeneration, including autophagic disruption, organellar dysfunction, aging, and other cell stresses. In neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, e

Spotlight on pro-inflammatory chemokines: regulators of cellular communication in cognitive impairment.

Cognitive impairment is a decline in people's ability to think, learn, and remember, and so forth. Cognitive impairment is a global health challenge that affects the quality of life of thousands of people. The condition covers a wide range from mild cognitive impairment to severe dementia, which includes Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), among others. While the etiology of cognitive impairment is diverse, the role of chemokines is increasingly evident, especially in the presence of chronic inflammation and neuroinflammation. Although inflammatory chemokines have been linke

Pain in non-communicative older adults beyond dementia: a narrative review.

Aging is associated with an increased risk of developing pain, especially in the presence of concurrent chronic clinical conditions. Similarly, multimorbidity can affect the perception and ability of older adults to appropriately respond to and communicate pain, and there is a clinical heterogeneity in the processing of painful sensations in different neurological conditions. The present narrative review is aimed at assessing the prevalent diseases associated with poor communication and pain in older adults, together with the available diagnostic instruments for the clinical assessment of pain

Change in suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety following collaborative care in the community.

BACKGROUND: The Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) increases access to mental health treatment and improves outcomes among patients with mild to moderate psychopathology; however, it is unclear how effective CoCM is for patients with elevated suicide risk. METHODS: We examined data from the Penn Integrated Care program, a CoCM program including an intake and referral management center plus traditional CoCM services implemented in primary care clinics within a large, diverse academic medical system. In this community setting, we examined: (1) characteristics of patients with and without suicidal

Exosomal secreted SCIMP regulates communication between macrophages and neutrophils in pneumonia.

In pneumonia, the deficient or delayed pathogen clearance can lead to pathogen proliferation and subsequent overactive immune responses, inducing acute lung injury (ALI). While screening human genome coding genes using our peripheral blood cell chemotactic platform, we unexpectedly find SLP adaptor and CSK interacting membrane protein (SCIMP), a protein with neutrophil chemotactic activity secreted during ALI. However, the specific role of SCIMP in ALI remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the secretion of SCIMP in exosomes (SCIMPexo) by macrophages after bacterial stimulation, both i

Primary and Secondary Callous-Unemotional Childhood Variants in a Korean Community Sample.

Despite the growing support for the multiple developmental pathways to phenotypic callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., primary, and secondary CU variants), there remains limited research on childhood manifestations of CU variants in non-Western, community samples. Using a latent profile analysis with data sourced from the longitudinal, nationwide Korean sample (N = 1597, 48.7% girls), we discerned heterogeneous groups of children, based on externalizing problems, CU traits, and emotional reactivity level. The optimal five-profile solution identified distinct subgroups: low-risk, primary CU (

Community-acquired pneumonia: The importance of the early detection of drug-resistant organisms.

Pneumonia is a disease associated with significant healthcare burden with over 1.5 million hospitalizations annually and is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. While community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is generally considered an acute time-limited illness, it is associated with high long-term mortality, with nearly one-third of patients requiring hospitalization dying within one year. An increasing trend of detecting multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms causing CAP has been observed, especially in the Western world. In this editorial, we discuss about a publication by Jattepp

An Assertive Community Intervention to Engage Youth with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Families.

Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are the most effective treatment for OUD. Many patients struggle with adherence, but young adults face unique developmental barriers and experience higher relapse rates. The Youth Opioid Recovery Support (YORS) intervention is a developmentally informed behavioral approach to increase medication adherence through assertive outreach, family involvement, low-barrier access to extended-release MOUD, and contingency management. Early studies have shown promising results, and a randomized controlled trial is underway. Here we describe the implementation of

Therapist-Level Moderators of Patient-Therapist Match Effectiveness in Community Psychotherapy.

Based on patient-reported outcomes data analyzed at the provider level, there is evidence that psychotherapists can possess effectiveness strengths and weaknesses when treating patients with different presenting concerns. These within-therapist differences hold promise for personalizing care by prospectively matching patients to therapists' historical effectiveness strengths. In a double-masked randomized controlled trial (RCT; NCT02990000), such matching outperformed pragmatically determined usual case assignment-which leaves personalized, measurement-based matching to chance-in naturalistic

Surgical management of a cervical oesophageal duplication cyst with tracheal communication in a dog.

Foregut duplication cysts can arise anywhere in the gastrointestinal system, leading to non-specific clinical signs in small animals. There are few reports of foregut duplication cysts in the literature that have been managed surgically. This report describes a case of multilevel foregut duplication cysts in a dog, including a cervical oesophageal duplication cyst with tracheal communication. Surgical treatment by resection resulted in the resolution of clinical signs. No clinical evidence of recurrence was noted at 12 months post-operatively. Surgical resection may be a feasible option for th
