Polygenic Risk Scores for Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms and their Mediating Effect in Clinically Diagnosed Samples of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Autism and Tourette syndrome.

Here, we present the first genome-wide association study of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a sample of clinically diagnosed pediatric participants and healthy controls. Using a psychiatric questionnaire score as a quantitative trait we conducted a large-scale genetic analysis and ran multiple post-association analyses to investigate the mediating role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in six comorbid neuropsychiatric disorders. Although no SNPs reached genome-wide significance, we identified suggestive associations on chromosomes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 17, 19, and 22. Notable genes mapped to these re

Controversy: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial direct current stimulation shows efficacy in treating psychiatric diseases (depression, mania, schizophrenia, obsessive-complusive disorder, panic, posttraumatic stress disorder).

Brain imaging studies performed over the past 20 years have generated new knowledge about the specific brain regions involved in the brain diseases that have been classically labeled as psychiatric. These include the mood and anxiety disorders, and the schizophrenias. As a natural next step, clinical researchers have investigated whether the minimally invasive brain stimulation technologies (transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS] or transcranial direct current stimulation [tDCS]) might potentially treat these disorders. In this review, we critically review the research studies that have exami

Case Report: Treatment of subthreshold bipolar disorder in pregnancy: a report on the effectiveness of the Zamar Protocol® in three treatment-resistant depression cases.

INTRODUCTION: Subthreshold bipolar disorder (SBD), also referred to as unspecified bipolar disorder, is frequently encountered in patients with treatment-resistant depression. It presents with depressive and subthreshold manic and mixed symptoms. Sustained remission with full functional recovery is the aim of treatment in mood disorders as residual symptoms may cause disability, while relapse may be associated with increased morbidity or mortality. To date, evidence for achieving sustained remission in SBD is absent, with no studies reporting sustained remission outcomes. The only available ev

The effects of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) on heart rate variability (HRV) in people with depression and/or anxiety disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a widely used intervention for depression and anxiety. However, its effectiveness is typically evaluated using subjective self-report symptom scales, which are susceptible to bias. It is hypothesised that improvements in clinical symptoms following CBT may be accompanied by improvements in physiological regulation, particularly heart rate variability (HRV), which has been proposed as a marker of emotion regulation. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to examine the effects of CBT on HRV in adults with depression and/or anxiet

Temporomandibular disorder symptoms in Chinese and the U.S. University students: A cross-sectional study of oral behaviors, anxiety, depression, and country-level moderation.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared temporomandibular disorders (TMD) prevalence and its association with oral behaviors and psychological factors between Chinese and U.S. university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 435 students (224 China, 211 U.S.) assessed TMD (5Ts), oral behaviors (OBC-21), depression (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7). Adjusted multivariable logistic regression evaluated associations. RESULTS: Chinese students showed significantly higher TMD prevalence (OR = 3.214, 95%CI: 2.094-4.991, p < .001) and more TMD symptoms (IRR = 1.951, 95%CI: 1.602-2.382, p < .001) than U

Prevalence and predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety among community-dwelling women victim-survivors of intimate partner violence.

PURPOSE: We aimed to take a detailed approach to examine difference in the extent and nature of IPV victimisation and their association with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. METHODS: 100 community-dwelling IPV victim-survivors and 59 controls in Melbourne completed a series of questionnaires on IPV, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), brain injury, resilience, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Prevalence of PTSD, depression, and anxiety in victim-survivors were compared to controls using chi-square tests. Then we used logistic regressions to examine differences in the nature and extent of IPV vi

Emerging role of human endogenous retroviruses in mothers with history of perinatal depression and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring: Results from a pilot study.

Perinatal depression (PD) actually affects 10-15% of pregnant women and represents one of the most debated topics as potentially implicated in offspring neurodevelopmental disorders etiology, particularly Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Scientific evidence supports the role of Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERVs) in ASD, as a link among environmental stimuli, epigenetic remodeling and biological processes. The aim of the present study was to characterize the expression profile of different HERVs and selected cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from women who have experienced PD in

Transdiagnostic psychological processes underlying anxiety, depression, alcohol use disorder, and problematic social media use: A Bayesian RDoC-informed study.

Identifying transdiagnostic psychological processes underlying both internalizing and behavioral conditions is a central goal in contemporary clinical psychology, yet no prior study to our knowledge has simultaneously examined multiple theoretically grounded transdiagnostic domains across these outcomes within a unified Bayesian RDoC-informed framework. The present study investigated the contribution of well-established transdiagnostic psychological processes (i.e., emotion regulation, dispositional self-regulation, psychological flexibility, mentalization, insecure attachment, and childhood m

Association between antenatal depression and quality of life in pregnant women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: Mediating effects of pregnancy stress and psychological resilience.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with an increased risk of antenatal depression (AD), but the pathways linking AD to quality of life (QoL) remain insufficiently understood. In this single-center retrospective study, 301 pregnant women with HDP completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Perceived Stress Scale, Resilience Scale, and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Correlation and linear regression analyses were performed, and a chain mediation model (PROCESS Model 6; 5,000 bootstrap samples) was tested with adjustment for age, education, and adve

Changes in Phasic Heart Rate Variability Predict Clinical Outcomes Following Emotion Regulation Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Comorbid Depression.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occur and are marked by greater chronicity, severity, and poorer treatment response. Perseverative negative thinking (e.g., worry, rumination) is a transdiagnostic mechanism implicated in both disorders and linked to disruptions in large-scale neural networks, threat and reward processing, and vagal modulation. Heart rate variability (HRV)-particularly phasic HRV (vagal reactivity/recovery)-is a peripheral marker of autonomic flexibility and dynamic emotion regulation that may be sensitive to therapeutic chang…

Extended-Release Trazodone in Comorbid Major Depressive and Sedative-Hypnotic/Anxiolytic Use Disorders: A Real-World Preliminary Evaluation of Multidimensional Outcomes.

Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occurs with substance use disorders, resulting in greater clinical severity and poorer outcomes. Sedative-hypnotic/anxiolytic agents (SHA) are commonly used to manage anxiety and insomnia, also in MDD. However, their long-term intake might lead to misuse and physical and cognitive complications. Trazodone, an antidepressant with sedative and anxiolytic properties, has been proposed as an option in SHA detoxification, but data on patients with comorbid MDD and SHA use disorders (MDD+SHA-UD) are limited. This study retrospectively evaluat…
