More than 150 million people, mainly in developing countries, are affected by filarial nematode infections that cause debilitating and disfiguring diseases. Although transmission is restricted to the tropics and subtropics, imported infections sometimes occur in Europe and North America among immigrants and refugees from endemic countries, and rarely among long-term travelers. This article reviews the epidemiology of the most important human filarial nematodes, their current distribution, life cycles, clinical features, and disease burden. Diagnosis, treatment, and tools for prevention and con…

Ascariasis is one of the most common helminthic diseases in humans, occurring mostly in countries with low standards of public health and hygiene, thereby making ascariasis highly endemic in developing countries. In endemic areas, 30% of adults and 60-70% of children harbour the adult worm. Biliary ascariasis is a rare cause of obstructive jaundice. Conventional management involves endoscopic extraction of worm. We are reporting a rare case of ascaris which induced extrahepatic biliary obstruction in a young male who presented with acute cholangitis. The ascaris was removed by laparoscopic exp…

With the onset of the human immunodeficiency virus pandemic, the incidence of tuberculosis, including central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis, has increased in developed countries. It is no longer a disease confined to underdeveloped and developing countries. The imaging appearance has become more complex with the onset of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis of CNS tuberculosis and may prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality. This article presents an extensive review of typical and atypical imaging appearances of intracranial tuberculo…

Although the case fatality rate for ectopic pregnancies has decreased to 0.08% in industrialized countries, it still represents 3.8% of maternal mortality in the United States alone. In developing countries, the case fatality rate varies from 3% to 27%. Laparoscopic management of tubal pregnancies is now the standard form of treatment where this technology is available. Abdominal pregnancies are rare, and secondary implantation of tubal ectopic pregnancies is the most common cause of abdominal gestations. We present an interesting case of secondary implantation of a tubal ectopic pregnancy to …

Amebiasis is a common parasitic infectious disease in developing countries. In developed countries, it is occasionally encountered in travelers to the tropics and in homosexual males. During the past eight years, we detected four cases of amebic colitis among 5,193 subjects who underwent colonoscopy because of positive fecal occult blood test results in a mass screening. All four cases did not have any abdominal symptoms. Ulcerative lesions were observed only in the cecum and ascending colon; another portion of the colon and rectum appeared normal. We may encounter amebic colitis during colono…

We present the case of a vesicouterine fistula secondary to a caesarean section indicated due to the disproportion the pelvis and the head of the baby. This kind of fistula is due fundamentally to obstetric causes, especially to caesarean sections in developed countries and to prolonged labour in developing countries. The commonest clinical presentation is urinary incontinence in the form of continuous or intermittent urinary leaks. Surgical treatment is generally the therapy of choice, although, in the case of small fistulas, conservative treatment is feasible. The best form of prevention is …

A case-control study of antecedents of neonatal septicaemia was performed using 50 cases of neonatal septicaemia and 73 comparison infants from a Malaysian hospital nursery. Multivariate analysis indicated the following independent risk factors: maternal primiparity, pre-eclampsia, prolonged rupture of membranes, twin pregnancy, prematurity, assisted ventilation, umbilical catheterization, and formula feeding. Although the spectrum of causative organisms varied between our study and past studies from Western countries, the risk factors for developing neonatal septicaemia were strikingly simila

Ambient air pollutants are leading contributors to global mortality. Despite the well-established risks, most studies have relied on single-pollutant models in limited regions, leaving the combined effects and individual contributions of pollutants unclear, particularly across countries. Here, we integrate daily mortality and air pollutant (nitrogen dioxide [NO2], ozone [O3], fine particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide) data from 482 cities in 12 countries/territories from 1998 to 2021 to assess the joint mortality risks and identify the main contributing pollutant through an air quality healt

Infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV) is highly prevalent in developing countries and the WHO estimates one third of the world population has had contact with the virus. Its diagnosis and epidemiology are well known in endemic countries but, recently, there have been sporadic cases in developed countries in patients with no history of travel. Currently in these countries, hepatitis E is considered a zoonosis yet there remain to be known other routes of transmission. Another interesting aspect is that HEV can cause chronic hepatitis in transplanted patients, other immunocompromised patients an…

Among immigrants resident in greater London from Europe, Ireland, the USSR, the old Commonwealth countries of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, North and South America, Egypt, Turkey, and Iran the incidence of admission to hospital for probable multiple sclerosis (MS) between 1960 and 1972 was high or moderately high. The incidence was the same order as that found in those born in the United Kingdom. Immigrants from India, Pakistan, and other Asian countries and from new Commonwealth Africa and America, which includes the West Indies, had a low incidence of hospital admission for MS. Immigra

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where infectious diseases are more prevalent. Effective surveillance in these settings is key for tracking resistance trends and informing public health interventions, yet few implementation studies have delineated the particular challenges and opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities in LMICs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a multi-component AMR surveillance capacity-building intervention on institutional surveill

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become a growing part of everyday diets worldwide and have been linked to obesity, non-communicable diseases, and adverse mental health outcomes. Yet their role in deepening nutritional and health inequalities across socioeconomic groups and different stages of life is still not fully addressed in policy discussions. Drawing on recent population-based studies, longitudinal surveys, and mechanistic evidence, this perspective examines how UPF consumption intersects with food insecurity, psychosocial distress, and neurodevelopmental health from pregnancy through

GOALS: Describe the establishment and expansion of a global gastrointestinal (GI) partnership and its impact on the advancement of GI care in Rwanda.
BACKGROUND: GI disease disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries. In Rwanda, governmental and nonprofit efforts have made significant progress in expanding access to health care in the wake of the 1994 genocide; however, specialized care remains largely unrecognized or inaccessible. In response, the Rwanda Ministry of Health established a partnership with an international gastroenterology NGO to address this critical need.

Digital health promises a revolution in healthcare delivery, yet in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), a stark digital divide threatens to exacerbate health inequities. While innovations like telemedicine and mobile health apps have surged globally post-COVID-19, millions in LMICs remain excluded due to poor internet access, unaffordable devices, and low digital literacy, especially in rural areas. This perspective piece examines the current landscape, highlighting successes like Uganda's mTrac for disease tracking alongside systemic barriers such as weak data privacy. Drawing on local e

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) presents significant challenges for both patients and their families. However, the mental health needs of persons with cystic fibrosis (PWCF) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain under-explored. Limited resources, fragmented healthcare systems, and inequities in access to essential CF treatments often compound psychological stressors such as depression, anxiety, and caregiver burden.
METHODS: This review examined existing literature, found in several medical databases (e.g., PubMed, PsychInfo, Embase, Cochrane Library), on the mental health and p

BACKGROUND: As survival improves for individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) worldwide, the number of adolescents requiring transition from pediatric to adult care is rapidly growing. In addition to limited resources and lack of uniform access to medical care, traditional treatments, and advanced therapies, the increasing number of transitioning young adults in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face barriers and challenges to safe transition from pediatric to adult healthcare that are both universal and unique. This shift in demographics presents distinct challenges due to an underdevelop
