Selective interfacing to small multifunctional nerves such as the vagus nerve (VN) which is the main multimodal autonomic nerve that provides a major communication pathway from vital peripheral organs to the brain, can have significant potential in treating and diagnosing diseases as well as enhancing our understanding of peripheral nerve circuits. Here we describe the fabrication of a 16-channel intraneural electrode array with ultramicro-dimensioned electrodes to achieve improved functionally selective recording. We demonstrate that the amorphous silicon carbide ultramicroelectrode arrays (a

Procedural anesthesia is administered by family physicians for a variety of conditions, including neuropathies, fracture reduction, foreign body removals, and complex wound management. A nerve block may be preferred because it provides effective regional anesthesia with less anesthetic. Nerve blocks require a thorough understanding of relevant anatomy, aiding the physician in optimizing the anesthesia effect while minimizing complications. Nerve blocks can be guided by bony landmarks, peripheral nerve stimulation, or ultrasonography. Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks are superior in decreasing pr

INTRODUCTION: Foot Drop (FD) is a condition, which is very commonly found in post-stoke patients; however it can also be seen in patients with multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. It is a sign of neuromuscular damage caused by the weakness of the muscles. There are various approaches of FD's rehabilitation, such as physiotherapy, surgery, and the use of technological devices. Recently, researchers have worked on developing various technologies to enhance assisting and rehabilitation of FD.
AREAS COVERED: This review analyzes different types of technologies available for FD. This include de

Electroconvulsive therapy has been used successfully in some individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments. But there are only a few reports. Meanwhile, an array of new neuromodulation strategies, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, trigeminal nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation have been developed and applied experimentally in the treatment of other psychiatric disorders. This article will review the clinical evidence and mechanistic ba

Anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) has been shown to be involved in most of the functional imaging studies investigating acute pain. For 10-15 years, it has even been a main focus of interest for pain studies, considering that neurons in the aMCC could encode for pain intensity. This latter function is now presumed to occur in secondary somatosensory (SII) area and/or insular cortices, while anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is supposed to sustain other functions such as pain-related attention, arousal, motor withdrawal reflex, pain modulations, and engagement of endogenous pain control system.

Diaphragm pacing (DP) is a useful and cost-effective alternative to mechanical ventilation in patients with ventilator-dependent spinal cord injury and central hypoventilation syndrome. Patients with SCI should be carefully screened to assess the integrity of their phrenic nerves. In eligible patients, DP improves mobility, speech, olfaction, and quality of life. The stigma of being attached to a mechanical device and risk of ventilator disconnection are eliminated. There is also some evidence that DP results in a reduction in the rate of respiratory tract infections. DP is associated with inf

Hand amputation is a traumatic event that dramatically and permanently changes the life of any person who undergoes one. After surgery, the amputee requires a prosthetic device to perform activities of daily living-in particular, tasks requiring grasping and manipulation functions. According to the Washington, D.C.-based Amputee Coalition, there are 1.9 million amputees who use limb prosthetic services and products, and it is estimated that, among them, 500,000 are upper-limb amputees, with approximately 185,000 new amputations every year (www.amputee-coalition.org). During the nineteenth century, the scientific context of rabies treatment was weak due to the lack of the literature on specific nosology of the rabies disease, and unspecific and ineffective therapy approaches. Electrotherapy already represented an important therapeutic approach for nervous system diseases, although not specifically for rabies. In the present paper, the authors discuss the use of electrotherapy in the treatment of humans affected by rabies in an experimental study conducted at the Maggiore Hospital of Milan, with the aim of establishing the discovery of a possible specific th

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngeal adductor muscle dysfunction is a common cause of voice disorders. Reconstitution of adductor muscle function is often the target of therapy, but the effects of these muscles on voice production remain to be fully understood. This study investigated the differential roles of thyroarytenoid (TA) and lateral cricoarytenoid (LCA) muscles on voice production.
STUDY DESIGN: Basic science study using an in vivo canine model of phonation.
METHODS: The TA and LCA muscle nerve branches were stimulated to obtain seven graded levels of muscle activation, from threshold t

Trigeminal neuralgia is a type of orofacial pain that is diagnosed in 150,000 individuals each year, with an incidence of 12.6 per 100,000 person-years and a prevalence of 155 cases per 1,000,000 in the United States. Trigeminal neuralgia pain is characterized by sudden, severe, brief, stabbing or lancinating, recurrent episodes of pain in the distribution of one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve, which can cause significant suffering for the affected patient population. In many patients, a combination of medication and interventional treatments can be therapeutic, but is not always suc

In this study, the electrochemical performance of platinum electrodes within a multi-electrode spiral cuff to be used for selective nerve stimulation was investigated. The original cuff, simplified into a half-cuff, contained a single row of nine electrodes (0.5 × 2 mm) at a distance of 2 mm from its inner surface. Cyclic voltammetry was used to investigate the electrochemical reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface, to define a potential window within which the electrode could be safely used in selective nerve stimulation, to calculate the charge injection capacity and cathodal charg

A mechanical Lower Limb Paralysis Simulator (LLPS) was developed for able-bodied persons to model the gait of Reciprocating Gait Orthosis (RGO) users. The purpose of this study was to determine if able-bodied subjects ambulating with the LLPS exhibited gait characteristics typical of RGO users. Five able-bodied persons were trained to ambulate with the LLPS and underwent a motion gait analysis. LLPS users were found to exhibit gait patterns that were characteristic of RGO-assisted gait.

PURPOSE: Chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a debilitating disease which often has a major impact on quality of life. A significant number of patients do not respond to conservative treatment and often no good alternative can be offered except radical surgery. Sacral neuromodulation is a well established therapy for patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction. This therapy has also been suggested to be useful in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain. Although currently no Food and Drug Administration approval exists for this indication, several studies have demonstrated promising results. We pro
