Diabetes Distress in Emerging Adulthood: Content Validity of the Problem Areas in Diabetes-Emerging Adult Version (PAID-EA) Using Qualitative Analysis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the emotional work of diabetes during emerging adulthood and to explicate the validity of a newly developed measure of diabetes distress (DD) for use with emerging adults living with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), the Problem Areas in Diabetes-Emerging Adult version (PAID-EA). METHODS: Young people ages 18 to 30 with T1DM were recruited online to complete a cross-sectional survey including measures of DD, depressive symptomology, and the PAID-EA. To evaluate content validity, 2 open-ended questions asked what was the most significant emotion

Emergence of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Pathogens in Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections Among Infants at a Pediatric Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing pathogens are common among adults and are associated with extended and multiple hospitalizations. They cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) among children with known risk factors such as urinary tract abnormalities and antimicrobial prophylaxis. The emergence of UTIs caused by ESBL-producing organisms among infants has not been well characterized. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the incidence and current clinical management of infants who were diagnosed with UTIs caused by ESBL-producing organisms at a pediatric emergency department

Risk of peri-intubation adverse events during emergency department intubation of overdose patients: a national emergency airway registry (near) analysis.

BACKGROUND: More than 20,000 emergency department (ED) patients undergo intubation for overdose each year. While the characteristics of patients intubated for overdose and poisoning are well described, little is known about the intubation outcomes of overdose patients in the ED. OBJECTIVES: We quantify the frequency of peri-intubation adverse events for patients intubated in the ED for overdose, and determine whether first attempt success without adverse events differs between patients intubated for overdose and patients intubated for other reasons. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Nationa

Factors Associated With Dermatologic Follow-up vs Emergency Department Return in Patients With Hidradenitis Suppurativa After an Initial Emergency Department Visit.

IMPORTANCE: Emergency department (ED) visitation is common for the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), whereas dermatology outpatient care is low. The reasons underlying this differential follow-up have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the interventions and patient factors associated with ED return following an initial ED visit for HS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the IBM® MarketScan® Commercial and Multi-State Medicaid databases (trademark symbols retained per database owner requirement). An HS cohort was formed from pati

Outcomes and CT scan three-dimensional volumetric analysis of emergent paraesophageal hernia repairs: predicting patients who will require emergent repair.

INTRODUCTION: Elective repair versus watchful waiting remains controversial in paraesophageal hernia (PEH) patients. Generation of predictive factors to determine patients at greatest risk for emergent repair may prove helpful. The aim of this study was to evaluate patients undergoing elective versus emergent PEH repair and supplement this comparison with 3D volumetric analysis of hiatal defect area (HDA) and intrathoracic hernia sac volume (HSV) to determine risk factors for increased likelihood of emergent repair. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively enrolled, single-center he

Assessing the application of a pseudovirus system for emerging SARS-CoV-2 and re-emerging avian influenza virus H5 subtypes in vaccine development.

BACKGROUND: Highly pathogenic emerging and re-emerging viruses continuously threaten lives worldwide. In order to provide prophylactic prevention from the emerging and re-emerging viruses, vaccine is suggested as the most efficient way to prevent individuals from the threat of viral infection. Nonetheless, the highly pathogenic viruses need to be handled in a high level of biosafety containment, which hinders vaccine development. To shorten the timeframe of vaccine development, the pseudovirus system has been widely applied to examine vaccine efficacy or immunogenicity in the emerging and re-e

Population genetics of Oncomelania hupensis snails, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma japonium, from emerging, re-emerging or established habitats within China.

Schistosomiasis remains one of the world's most significant neglected tropical diseases, second only to malaria in terms of socioeconomic impact. In 2014, China proposed the goal of schistosomiasis japonicum elimination by 2025. However, one major challenge is the widely distributed, and in certain cases potentially increasing, habitats of Oncomelania hupensis, the snail intermediate hosts of S. japonicum. Therefore, an understanding of population genetics of O. hupensis in new or re-emerged habitats, together with that of the established habitats with snail persistence, would be valuable in c

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta performed by emergency physicians for traumatic hemorrhagic shock: a case series from Japanese emergency rooms.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA), which has been increasingly used for the management of hemorrhagic shock, is a less invasive strategy for the management of patients with very severe hemorrhage. However, its effectiveness remains controversial. METHODS: This retrospective case series included trauma patients who underwent REBOA for hemorrhagic shock due to trauma in four Japanese tertiary care emergency centers from January 2013 to March 2017. Patients in cardiac arrest at the time of REBOA and those who underwent REBOA for nontraumatic causes dur

Chloroquine could be used for the treatment of filoviral infections and other viral infections that emerge or emerged from viruses requiring an acidic pH for infectivity.

Viruses from the Filoviridae family, as many other virus families, require an acidic pH for successful infection and are therefore susceptible to the actions of 4-aminoquinolines, such as chloroquine. Although the mechanisms of action of chloroquine clearly indicate that it might inhibit filoviral infections, several clinical trials that attempted to use chloroquine in the treatment of other acute viral infections - including dengue and influenza A and B - caused by low pH-dependent viruses, have reported that chloroquine had no clinical efficacy, and these results demoted chloroquine from the

Re-emerging chloramphenicol sensitivity and emerging low level ciprofloxacin resistance among Salmonella enterica serotype typhi isolates in North India.

Ciprofloxacin has become the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of typhoid fever with the emergence and worldwide spread of Salmonella enterica typhi strains resistant to chloramphenicol. However, the rampant use of ciprofloxacin gradually led to an increase in its minimum inhibitory concentration against S. enterica typhi. This threatened its therapeutic efficacy and resulted in the re-emergence of chloramphenicol-sensitive S. enterica typhi strains.

Establishment of ex vivo calibration curve for X-ray induced "dicentric + ring" and micronuclei in human peripheral lymphocytes for biodosimetry during radiological emergencies, and validation with dose blinded samples.

In the modern developing society, application of radiation has increased extensively. With significant improvement in the radiation protection practices, exposure to human could be minimized substantially, but cannot be avoided completely. Assessment of exposure is essential for regulatory decision and medical management as applicable. Until now, cytogenetic changes have served as surrogate marker of radiation exposure and have been extensively employed for biological dose estimation of various planned and unplanned exposures. Dicentric Chromosomal Aberration (DCA) is radiation specific and is

Emergent Headwater Types for Watershed Monitoring, Research, and Planning.

Headwaters-that is headwater streams and the watersheds they drain-strongly influence water quality, ecosystem services, and hydrologic connectivity, yet remain poorly mapped, monitored, and understood at large spatial scales. Using available spatial data to classify headwater "types" could therefore enhance the utility of sparse monitoring data to advance research and watershed planning-and help update literature-based perceptual models of headwaters as steep, forested, and minimally disturbed watersheds. Here, we analyze headwaters across the contiguous United States to quantify how their at

Biomass DNA: An Emerging Building Block for Advanced Materials.

Since the structural discovery of DNA's double helix, it transitioned from a genetic carrier to a cornerstone of programmable nanotechnology and materials science. However, while synthetic DNA with predesigned sequences has dominated DNA-based materials, biomass DNA, naturally derived from bulk biological resources, has emerged as a powerful large-scale engineering material. This review outlines biomass DNA-derived materials and their multifunctional applications, framed as a "Biomass DNA Tree," representing biomass resources as roots, duplexes as stems, and advanced materials as leaves. For e

Evidence-based management of kawasaki disease in the emergency department.

Kawasaki disease is currently the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed countries. Signs and symptoms of Kawasaki disease may mimic other childhood illnesses, making it difficult to diagnose, especially in children who present with an incomplete form of the disease. Untreated Kawasaki disease may lead to the formation of coronary artery aneurysms and sudden cardiac death. Emergency clinicians should consider Kawasaki disease in pediatric patients presenting with prolonged fever, as prompt evaluation and management can significantly decrease the risk for serious cardi
