Emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms among patients with terminal chronic alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with toxic substance abuse syndrome, such as alcohol abuse, have elevated psychopathologic morbidity and mortality such as mood disorders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms in patients with alcohol-induced hepatic cirrhosis on the liver transplant waiting list. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis who were candidates for liver transplant (n = 41) completed the SA-45 questionnaire (González y Cuevas; 88), which assesses nine dimensions: somatizations, obsessive-compulsivity, interpersonal sensitivity, depressio

Functional magnetic resonance imaging correlates of emotional word encoding and recognition in depression and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder are among the most prevalent and frequently co-occu … e word encoding may underlie heightened experience of, and an inability to disengage from, negative emotions in depressive disorders. Our results emphasize a common neurobiological deficiency in both MDD and anxiety disorders, which may mark a general insensitiveness to positive information.

Understanding the importance of attachment in shame traumatic memory relation to depression: the impact of emotion regulation processes.

BACKGROUND: Early relationships are crucial to human brain maturation, well-being, affect regulation and self-other schema. Shame traumatic memories are related to psychopathology, and recent research has shown that the quality and type of attachment relationships may be crucial in shame traumatic memories in relation to psychopathology. The current study explores a mediator model of emotion regulation processes (rumination, thought suppression and dissociation) on the association between shame traumatic memory, with attachment figures and with others, and depressive symptoms. METHOD: Ninety

Emotional, behavioral, and cognitive factors that differentiate obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders in youth.

Abstract The current study examined specific emotional, behavioral, and cognitive variables that may distinguish obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SoP), and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth. Youth with OCD (n=26) and other anxiety disorders (ADs; n=31), aged 7-12 years (56.1% males), and their parents participated. The study compared the two anxious groups on levels of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning, as well as impairment associated with the disorder. Results indicated that in comparison to youth with GAD, So

Motor proficiency and emotional/behavioural disturbance in autism and Asperger's disorder: another piece of the neurological puzzle?

The relationship of motor proficiency with emotional/behavioural disturbance, autistic symptoms and communication disturbance was investigated in children diagnosed with autism and Asperger's disorder (AD). The Movement Assessment Battery for Children was used as a measure of motor impairment, and the Developmental Behavioural Checklist was used as a measure of emotional/behavioural disturbance in the following groups: AD (n = 22), high functioning autism (HFA) (n = 23), LFA (n = 8) and typically developing children (n = 20). The HFA group had more difficulty with motor items, such as ball ski

Distress and emotional well-being in breast cancer patients prior to radiotherapy: an expectancy-based model.

Understanding precursors to distress and emotional well-being (EWB) experienced in anticipation of radiotherapy would facilitate the ability to intervene with this emotional upset (i.e. higher distress, lower EWB). Thus, this study tested an expectancy-based model for explaining emotional upset in breast cancer patients prior to radiotherapy. Women affected by breast cancer (N = 106) were recruited and participants completed questionnaires prior to commencing radiotherapy. Structural equation modelling was used to test a cross-sectional model, which assessed the ability of dispositional optimi

Variations in emotional abuse experiences among multiply maltreated young adolescents and relations with developmental outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Based on the data obtained through Child Protective Services (CPS) case records abstraction, this study aimed to explore patterns of overlapping types of child maltreatment in a sample of urban, ethnically diverse male and female youth (n= 303) identified as maltreated by a large public child welfare agency. METHODS: A cluster analysis was conducted on data for 303 maltreated youth. The overall categorization of four types of abuse (i.e., physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect) was used to provide a starting point for clustering of the 303 cases and then the subtypes of emot

[Cognitive, emotional and behavioral impact of an uncertain outcome after study of BRCA1/2: review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in oncogenetics have enabled the development of tests for predisposition to breast and ovarian cancers. Where no mutation has been identified in the BRCA1 or 2 genes, the proband (first person tested in a family with a genetic risk) can receive an uncertain outcome: negative inconclusive or identification of a variant of unknown clinical significance. From the demonstration of such outcomes, their psychological impact has been studied among women concerned. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of studies about the impact of delivering

Prenatal and postnatal psychological symptoms of parents and family functioning: the impact on child emotional and behavioural problems.

Although relations of various parental psychological problems and family functioning with child development are well documented, it remains unclear whether specific prenatal or specific postnatal risk factors are independently associated with child emotional and behavioural problems, or whether observed associations can be explained by general parental psychopathology. Using a stepwise approach, we examined the effects of prenatal and postnatal parental depressive symptoms, prenatal and postnatal hostility of the parents, as well as prenatal family functioning on the risk of child emotional an

Reduced deactivation in reward circuitry and midline structures during emotion processing in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a pervasive affective dysregulation. While recent imaging studies demonstrated the neural correlates of abnormal emotion processing in BPD and recently one study reported alterations of the reward circuit in this patient group, the exact neural mechanisms underlying the impact of abnormal emotion on reward behavior remain unclear. METHODS. We therefore conducted an fMRI study in healthy controls and BPD patients to investigate the modulation of the anticipation of reward by simultaneously presented emotional pictures. RESULT

Emotional reactivity and regulation in anxious and nonanxious youth: a cell-phone ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Reviews have highlighted anxious youths' affective disturbances, specifically, elevated negative emotions and reliance on ineffective emotion regulation strategies. However, no study has examined anxious youth's emotional reactivity and regulation in real-world contexts. METHODS: This study utilized an ecological momentary assessment approach to compare real-world emotional experiences of 65 youth with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or social phobia (ANX) and 65 age-matched healthy controls (CON), ages 9-13 years. RESULTS: Hierarchical linear models reveal…

Repeated amphetamine exposure disrupts dopaminergic modulation of amygdala-prefrontal circuitry and cognitive/emotional functioning.

Repeated exposure to psychostimulants such as amphetamine (AMPH) disrupts cognitive and behavioral processes mediated by the medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) and basolateral amygdala (BLA). The present study investigated the effects of repeated AMPH exposure on the neuromodulatory actions of dopamine (DA) on BLA-mPFC circuitry and cognitive/emotional processing mediated by these circuits. Rats received five AMPH (2 mg/kg) or saline injections (controls) over 10 d, followed by 2-4 week drug washout. In vivo neurophysiological extracellular recordings in urethane-anesthetized rats were used to

The relation between anger and different forms of disgust: implications for emotion recognition impairments in Huntington's disease.

Initial reports of emotion recognition in Huntington's disease (HD) found disproportionate impairments in recognising disgust. Not all subse … d with the expanded form, the subtype most closely aligned with anger. We conclude that the related emotions of disgust and anger associated with social disapproval are frequently impaired in HD and discuss factors that might cause one emotion to show more severe impairments than the other.

When faces signal danger: event-related potentials to emotional facial expressions in animal phobics.

Attentional bias research indicates that specific phobics prioritize the processing of disorder-relevant stimuli, although the time course of attentional allocation to the phobic threat remains unclear. The present study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether a processing bias also exists towards specific facial expressions that are able to signal potential phobic cues in the environment. Fifteen women with snake phobia and 15 healthy controls performed an attention-shifting task in which angry, fearful, disgusted and neutral faces were presented as emotional cues. ERP

The effects of acute tryptophan depletion on brain activation during cognition and emotional processing in healthy volunteers.

Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD), a method to temporarily lower central serotonin levels, has been used to study the functioning of the serotonergic system. Relatively recent studies that examined the effects of ATD on brain activation associated with cognitive and emotional processing in healthy volunteers are reviewed. An overview of the findings in healthy volunteers is important for the interpretation of the effect of ATD on brain activation in patients with an affective disorder, such as major depression. These studies show that during response control and negative feedback processing ATD

PTSD symptoms and dominant emotional response to a traumatic event:an examination of DSM-IV Criterion A2.

To qualify for a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) requires that individuals report experiencing dominant emotions of fear, helplessness, and horror during the trauma (Criterion A2). Despite this stipulation, traumatic events can elicit a myriad of emotions other than fear, such as anger, guilt or shame, sadness, and numbing. The present study examined which emotional reactions to a stressful event in a college student sample are associated with the highest levels of PTSD symptoms. Our results s…

Early maternal deprivation affects dentate gyrus structure and emotional learning in adult female rats.

RATIONALE: Stress elicits functional and structural changes in the hippocampus. Early life stress is one of the major risk factors for stress-related pathologies like depression. Patients suffering from depression show a reduced hippocampal volume, and in women, this occurs more often when depression is preceded by childhood trauma. However, the underlying mechanisms that account for a reduced hippocampal volume are unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined the effects of maternal absence on structure and function of the hippocampus in female offspring. METHODS: We studied whether 24 h of maternal dep

Serotonin transporter gene moderates the development of emotional problems among children following bullying victimization.

OBJECTIVE: Bullying is the act of intentionally and repeatedly causing harm to someone who has difficulty defending him- or herself, and is a relatively widespread school-age phenomenon. Being the victim of bullying is associated with a broad spectrum of emotional problems; however, not all children who are bullied go on to develop such problems. METHOD: We tested the hypothesis that the relationship between bullying victimization and emotional problems was moderated by variation in the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene in 2,232 British children comprising the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) stu

Twenty-four-week treatment with extended release methylphenidate improves emotional symptoms in adult ADHD.

OBJECTIVES: Treatment investigations with methylphenidate in adults with ADHD focus preferentially on the classical psychopathology: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADHD-associated emotional symptoms, which are frequently present at least in ADHD subpopulations, were studied rarely. The vast majority of the placebo-controlled trials had observation periods between 4 and 8 weeks. To assess the medium- to long-term effects of extended release methylphenidate (MPH-ER) on emotional symptoms and other psychopathology frequently seen in ADHD patients, we conducted a large-scale, multicen
