A cortical potential reflecting cardiac function.

Emotional trauma and psychological stress can precipitate cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death through arrhythmogenic effects of efferent sympathetic drive. Patients with preexisting heart disease are particularly at risk. Moreover, generation of proarrhythmic activity patterns within cerebral autonomic centers may be amplified by afferent feedback from a dysfunctional myocardium. An electrocortical potential reflecting afferent cardiac information has been described, reflecting individual differences in interoceptive sensitivity (awareness of one's own heartbeats). To inform our understanding

[Neurogenic bladder dysfunction a main disability of decompression sickness: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Bladder dysfunction is common in the acute phase of decompression sickness and often precedes motor disorders. Few studies hav … as found on 2 sessions of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (cerebral and spinal), and somatosensory-evoked potentials were normal. Motor-evoked potential onset latencies were delayed. Neuro-urodynamic investigations revealed detrusor sphincter dysynergia and detrusor overactivity. On quick, complete motor recovery, the patient returned to work and continued with sp …

Dopaminergic drugs restore facilitatory premotor-motor interactions in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of dopaminergic therapy on facilitatory premotor-motor interactions in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS: Ten patients with PD and 10 age-matched healthy volunteers received repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left dorsal premotor cortex (5 Hz, 1,500 stimuli, 90% of active motor threshold). Patients were studied while "on" and "off" medication. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the right first dorsal interosseus muscle before and after rTMS to quantify changes in motor cortical excitability. The after-effect…

Different corticostriatal projections from two parts of the cortical masticatory area in the rabbit.

The cortical masticatory area (CMA) elicits rhythmic jaw movements in response to repetitive stimulation and is involved in the control of m … d to be higher than that from the area inducing the C-pattern. Furthermore, the peak latency of the evoked potentials from stimulation of the CMA area inducing the T-pattern was shorter than that from stimulation of the area inducing the C-pattern. The data obtained from the present study indicate the functional role of the ventral region of the putamen in the regu …

Trauma to the pontomesencephalic brainstem-a major clue to the prognosis of severe traumatic brain injury.

The objective of this study was to assess the significance of an injury to the pontomesencephalic brainstem in severe traumatic brain injury [Glasgow coma score (GCS) below 8]. Forty victims of severe traumatic brain injury with and with out compounding pathologies almost equally distributed among both groups were studied. The outcome (mean follow-up, 11.3 months) was assessed by means of the Glasgow outcome score (GOS) and of the Disability rating scale (DRS). Injury of the brainstem was detected by electrophysiological investigation (evoked potentials, brainstem reflexes) and magnetic resona…

Modulation of rodent cortical motor excitability by somatosensory input.

It is assumed that somatosensory input is required for motor learning and recovery from focal brain injury. In rodents and other mammals, corticocortical projections between somatosensory and motor cortices are modified by patterned input. Whether and how motor cortex function is modulated by somatosensory input to support motor learning is largely unknown. Recent human evidence suggests that input changes motor excitability. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), this study tested whether motor cortex excitability is affected by patterned somatosensory stimulation in rodents. Motor po

Synaptic currents generating the inhibitory surround of ganglion cells in the mammalian retina.

The receptive field (RF) of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) consists of an excitatory central region, the RF center, and an inhibitory peripheral region, the RF surround. It is still unknown in detail which inhibitory interneurons (horizontal or amacrine cells) and which inhibitory circuits (presynaptic or postsynaptic) generate the RF surround. To study surround inhibition, light-evoked whole-cell currents were recorded from RGCs of the isolated, intact rabbit retina. The RFs were stimulated with light or dark spots of increasing diameters and with annular light stimuli. Direct inhibitory curre

Autosomal recessive adult-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis associated with homozygosity for Asp90Ala CuZn-superoxide dismutase mutation. A clinical and genealogical study of 36 patients.

We describe 36 patients (six were apparently sporadic cases and 30 were cases from nine families) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) characterized by a distinct phenotype associated with homozygosity for an Asp90Ala mutation in the CuZn-superoxide dismutase gene. The presenting motor manifestation in all patients was paresis in the legs, with slow progression to the upper extremities and finally to the bulbar muscles. The age of ALS onset varied from 20 to 94 years, with a mean of 44 years. Mean survival time was 13 years for the 11 deceased patients. However, this is probably biased and

The effects of low level laser treatment on recovery of nerve conduction and motor function after compression injury in the rat sciatic nerve.

An animal study is presented examining the effect of low level laser (LLL) treatment on nerve regeneration following axonotmesis. Twenty animals received a standardised injury to the right sciatic nerve using a time, load and length sequence (10 min, 150 N, 5 mm) known to cause extensive axonal degeneration of the rat sciatic nerve. The LLL treatment was administered using a hand-held laser probe in light contact with the skin on the dorsal aspect of the hind leg overlying the site of the axonotmesis injury to the sciatic nerve. A group of 10 animals were treated with 6J of LLL (GaAlAs 830 nm)

The bilateral bulbar projections of the primary olfactory neurons in the frog.

Whether or not the frog olfactory neuroreceptor cells project bilaterally to the olfactory bulb is still a debated question. We therefore decided to ascertain whether bilateral projections of the primary olfactory input exist and if so to investigate their extent. Reproducible extracellular bilateral bulbar potentials were recorded in the frog following electrical stimulation of dorsal or ventral olfactory nerve bundles. The general features of the contralateral evoked responses were very similar to those of the ipsilateral response. The contralateral response disappeared after transection of

Assessment of cochlear electrophysiology in typically developing children and children with auditory processing disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Children with auditory processing disorder (APD) are reported to have abnormal auditory brainstem responses (ABR) but little is understood about their cochlear integrity. Poor cochlear integrity can affect neural responses. In this study, cochlear and auditory brainstem integrity was investigated in children with APD. METHOD: Twenty children with APD, sixteen typically developing children and twenty adults participated in this study. Click evoked electrocochleography (ECochG) and ABRs were recorded from all the participants. Cochlear responses were analyzed using a) latency and amp

Effects of adaptation on electrocochleography and auditory brain-stem responses in the elderly.

Changes in the amplitude and latency of the evoked potentials in electrocochleography (ECochG) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR) produced by increased stimulus rates (adaptation) were investigated using an extratympanic ECochG technique with simultaneous recording of the ABR in 12 elderly patients, and compared with those of eight normally hearing young adult subjects. Although the absolute latencies of the action potential (AP) and ABR waves were delayed in the elderly, the shift in latency of these components with increased stimulus rate was similar in both groups of subjects. Amplitude…

Electrocochleography and the glycerol dehydration test: a case study.

The electrocochleographic changes which occurred during glycerol dehydration in an ear affected by endolymphatic hydrops due to Menière's disease are discussed. This single case study is reported because the recordings were large and stable, and because they clearly showed the electrocochleographic abnormality associated with endolymphatic hydrops; namely, a large summating potential (SP) in relation to the action potential (AP). After dehydration a dramatic improvement occurred in both the pure tone and speech audiogram. The electrocochleogram showed a decrease in the SP amplitude and little

[Interest of auditory brainstem responses in clinical diagnosis (author's transl)].

The auditory brainstem response yields information on both the neurological and the audiological status of infants and adults. These early waves have particular properties as: non-habituation, absence of modification between sleep, awake state or under high doses of barbiturates. We have developed a procedure for extracting each type of information by measuring the latencies of wave I (auditory nerve) and wave V (inferior colliculus), then the speed of conduction between these two waves.

Low concentrations of pentobarbital enhance excitability of rat hippocampal neurons.

BACKGROUND: Although the excitation phase observed during anesthetic induction and emergence is familiar to anesthesiologists, the cellular mechanisms of this phenomenon are not well understood. At anesthetic concentrations approximately one-tenth those required for surgical anesthesia, subjects demonstrate increased responsiveness to noxious stimulation. We previously estimated that the decrease in nociceptive reflex threshold is maximal at pentobarbital concentrations of approximately 5 microM. Here we used the rat hippocampal slice preparation to examine whether 5 microM pentobarbital incre

Myenteric neurons of the rat descending colon: electrophysiological and correlated morphological properties.

Conventional intracellular electrophysiological recordings were made from 502 myenteric neurons of the rat descending colon. Myenteric neurons could be classified into three groups on the basis of distinct electrophysiological properties. The first group of neurons (51% of all neurons) fired tetrodotoxin-sensitive action potentials in response to direct somal depolarization and the majority (98%) of this group generated fast cholinergic excitatory synaptic potentials in response to focal stimulation and were therefore designated S/Type 1 neurons. The second group (40%) of neurons fired tetrodo

Single Neuron Contributions to the Auditory Brainstem EEG.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an acoustically evoked EEG potential that is an important diagnostic tool for hearing loss, especially in newborns. The ABR originates from the response sequence of auditory nerve and brainstem nuclei, and a click-evoked ABR typically shows three positive peaks ("waves") within the first six milliseconds. However, an assignment of the waves of the ABR to specific sources is difficult, and a quantification of contributions to the ABR waves is not available. Here, we exploit the large size and physical separation of the barn owl first-order cochlear nucle
