A systematic review of randomized clinical trials was conducted to evaluate the acceptability and usefulness of computerized patient education interventions. The Columbia Registry, MEDLINE, Health, BIOSIS, and CINAHL bibliographic databases were searched. Selection was based on the following criteria: (1) randomized controlled clinical trials, (2) educational patient-computer interaction, and (3) effect measured on the process or outcome of care. We have recently shown that dithiocarbamate (DC) disulfides inhibit proteolytic processing of the caspase-3 proenzyme in Jurkat T lymphocytes treated with anti-CD95 (Fas/APO-1) antibody. Because the processing can be accomplished by caspase activity, we investigated the effect of DC disulfides, such as disulfiram (DSF), on active caspases. DSF showed a dose-dependent inhibition was prevented by including dithiothreitol (DTT) in the reaction buffer, thiol-disulfide exchange between inhibitor and target is suggested. This paper reports research using data in the Nijmegen Family Practice Monitoring Project. One part of the research is follow-up, after 17 y, of a 1977 trial of dietary advice for patients with hypertension or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease. This article reviews the interactions between HIV infection and a variety of gynecologic conditions, including lower genital tract neoplasia, pelvic inflammatory disease, menstrual disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, and vaginitis. Important considerations in choosing a family planning method for women infected with HIV-infected women will respond to standard therapy, but require multiple courses of treatment or use of innovative treatment methods. All HIV-infected women deserve careful evaluation for and treatment of gynecologic diseases.

Progressive diaphyseal dysplasia was found in a 3-generation family including 18 affected individuals. We describe the clinical and radiographic manifestations in 6 of 18 patients with this autosomal-dominant bone dysplasia and the good symptomatic response to corticosteroid treatment in one of these. We had the opportunity to investigate the early abnormalities of the eyes in a family with osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome. This syndrome combines severe premature osteoporosis with a bilateral eye disorder, leading to early onset blindness. Using colour doppler imaging in the 4-month-old girl from this affected family we demonstrated persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in both eyes. Her brother's eyes had developed a partially calcified undefined mass. Our observation supports the hypothesis, that the disease gene may encode a matrix protein expressed in bone and eye.

We describe the first Danish family with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA), containing 16 clinically affected individuals in five generations. Inheritance is autosomal dominant. Children with central precocious puberty have pituitary gland size comparable to that of pubertal children (pituitary gland height 6.1 +/- 1.1 mm). We present of two sisters with precocious puberty and a pituitary gland height of more than 1 cm. On contrast enhanced MRI, there was homogeneous enhancement of the pituitary gland. There was no increase in pituitary gland size during the follow-up period (6 years and 2 years). These cases are reported for their rarity.

BACKGROUND: This article is a sequel to a previously published article describing the occurrence of cancer in a rural family practice and the contribution of screening to the diagnosis of breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer. Together, the two articles describe a 20-year family practice experience in diagnosing and screening for cancer.

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), a diverse immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by low immune globulin levels and recurrent infections, has been observed in families with the HLA A1 B8 DR3 haplotype.

On December 14, 1995, the first public presentation of results of the Transnational Case-Control Study of Oral Contraceptives and the Health of Young Women was made at the winter meeting of the British Pharmacological Society at Brighton.
