Correlation between fat-to-muscle mass ratio and cognitive impairment in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Fat to muscle mass ratio (FMR), a novel index integrating fat and muscle composition, has garnered attention in age-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite this research on the relationship between FMR and cognitive impairment (CI) in T2DM remains scarce. This study aimed to investigate the sex-specific association between FMR and CI in elderly T2DM patients. METHODS: A total of 768 elderly (> 60 years) T2DM in-patients (356 men and 412 women) were recruited from the Department of Endocrinology at Tianjin Nankai University

Metabolomic profiling of Prader-Willi syndrome compared with essential obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare disease, which shows a peculiar clinical phenotype, including obesity, which is different from essential obesity (EOB). Metabolomics might represent a valuable tool to reveal the biochemical mechanisms/pathways underlying clinical differences between PWS and EOB. The aim of the present (case-control, retrospective) study was to determine the metabolomic profile that characterizes PWS compared to EOB. METHODS: A validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) targeted metabolomic approach was used to measure a total of 188

Sarcopenic Obesity Versus Nonobese Sarcopenia in Hemodialysis Patients: Differences in Nutritional Status, Quality of Life, and Clinical Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) are linked to unfavorable prognosis in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) populations. We tested whether nonobese sarcopenia and SO, as different stages of extreme protein-energy wasting, have different prognoses. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 261 MHD patients were recruited from October 2010 to April 2012 and followed until October 2020. Two definitions were used to diagnose sarcopenia: the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People consensus and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Biomarkers

Metabolomic signatures of low- and high-adiposity neonates differ based on maternal BMI.

Maternal obesity [body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2] is associated with greater neonatal adiposity, cord blood (CB) insulin levels, and a proinflammatory phenotype at birth, contributing to risk of future cardiometabolic disease in the offspring. Variation in neonatal adiposity within maternal BMI groups is underappreciated, and it remains unclear whether the metabolic impairments at birth are an outcome of maternal obesity or excess fetal fat accrual. We examined the hypothesis that CB metabolites associated with fetal fat accrual differ between offspring of normal-weight and obese women. Umbi

Propranolol and low-dose isoproterenol ameliorate insulin resistance, enhance β-arrestin2 signaling, and reduce cardiac remodeling in high-fructose, high-fat diet-fed mice: Comparative study with metformin.

AIMS: β-Arrestin2 signaling has emerged as a promising therapeutic target for the management of insulin resistance and related complications. Moreover, recent studies have shown that certain G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) ligands can modulate β-arrestin2 signaling. The current study examined the effects of the β-blocker propranolol and a low dose of the agonist isoproterenol (L-D-ISOPROT) on β-arrestin2 signaling, insulin resistance, and cardiac remodeling in high-fructose, high-fat diet (HFrHFD)-fed mice. In addition, the effects of these agents were compared to those of the clinical antid

Noninvasive monitoring of liver fat during treatment with GLP-1 analogues and SGLT-2 inhibitors in a real-world setting.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with NAFLD have a two-fold increased risk of diabetes, and conversely, NAFLD affects up to 80% of patients with type 2 diabetes. Due to the co-occurrence of both diseases and the lack of approved pharmacotherapy for NAFLD, the anti-steatogenic potential of diabetes-related drugs is being explored. In this study, we aim to monitor liver fat noninvasively during treatment with SGLT-2 inhibitors or GLP-1 analogues in a real-world setting. METHODS: Overall, 39 patients (49% women, age 57.7 ± 10.9 years) with type 2 diabetes and hepatic steatosis (defined by controlled atten

Individualized target fortification of breast milk with protein, carbohydrates, and fat for preterm infants: A double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In preterm infants, natural variation of breast milk composition makes it difficult to achieve recommended macronutrient intakes with standard fortification. Evidence suggests that nutritional deficiency induces poor postnatal growth. This study investigates impacts of target fortification on preterm growth and metabolism by adjusting breast milk macronutrients. METHODS: This study was conducted as a single-centre, double-blind, randomized controlled trial for infants <30 gestational weeks. The control group received standard fortification and the intervention group receive

Postpneumonectomy syndrome related to the thickness of the fat tissue in the anterior mediastinum: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Postpneumonectomy syndrome (PPS) is a life-threatening condition characterized by the extrinsic compression of the mainstem bronchus after pneumonectomy, causing rapidly progressive dyspnea. Information regarding the predictive factors of this condition is limited. Thus, the current study aimed to identify the predictive findings that can help prepare the treatment of PPS in advance. METHODS: The present study is a retrospective observational study. We reviewed the medical records of 12 consecutive patients who underwent pneumonectomy for lung cancer or tuberculosis between 2009 a

Characteristics of sarcopenia after distal gastrectomy in elderly patients.

Presence of preoperative sarcopenia is a risk factor for postoperative complications. However, there are few reports on the presence of sarcopenia and its characteristics following gastrectomy. Sarcopenia is closely related to quality of life in elderly people. To date, the main purpose of follow-up after gastrectomy is surveillance for early detection of recurrence and secondary cancer. However, henceforth, quality of life in elderly gastric cancer patients after gastrectomy must also be evaluated. The present study aimed to investigate sarcopenia during a 1-year postoperative course in elder

Plasma midkine concentrations in healthy children, children with increased and decreased adiposity, and children with short stature.

BACKGROUND: Midkine (MDK), one of the heparin-binding growth factors, is highly expressed in multiple organs during embryogenesis. Plasma concentrations have been reported to be elevated in patients with a variety of malignancies, in adults with obesity, and in children with short stature, diabetes, and obesity. However, the concentrations in healthy children and their relationships to age, nutrition, and linear growth have not been well studied. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Plasma MDK was measured by immunoassay in 222 healthy, normal-weight children (age 0-18 yrs, 101 boys), 206 healthy adults (ag

Precision of the Hologic DXA in the Assessment of Visceral Adipose Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral fat, also known as visceral adipose tissue (VAT), has been the focus of intensive research over the past several yr, as ground breaking studies have investigated its possible role in predicting long-term cardiac dysfunction, hypertension, and diabetes. Historically, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography were the instruments of choice for visceral fat quantification. However, with the introduction of visceral fat assessment software for Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scanners, DXA's use for VAT assessment has become increasingly common. To effectively

Cell-Specific "Competition for Calories" Drives Asymmetric Nutrient-Energy Partitioning, Obesity, and Metabolic Diseases in Human and Non-human Animals.

The mammalian body is a complex physiologic "ecosystem" in which cells compete for calories (i.e., nutrient-energy). Axiomatically, cell-types with competitive advantages acquire a greater number of consumed calories, and when possible, increase in size and/or number. Thus, it is logical and parsimonious to posit that obesity is the competitive advantages of fat-cells (adipocytes) driving a disproportionate acquisition and storage of nutrient-energy. Accordingly, we introduce two conceptual frameworks. Asymmetric Nutrient-Energy Partitioning describes the context-dependent, cell-specific compe

The Effects of Caffeine on the Long Bones and Testes in Immature and Young Adult Rats.

This study was to evaluate the age-dependent effects of caffeine exposure on the long bones and reproductive organs using male rats. A total of 15 immature male rats and 15 young adult male rats were allocated randomly to three groups: a control group and two groups fed caffeine with 120 and 180 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. Exposure to caffeine at either dose significantly reduced body weight gain; a proportional reduction in muscle and fat mass in immature animals, whereas a selective reduction in fat mass with relatively preserved muscle mass in young adult animals. The long bones of immature rats
