Silence and related symptoms in children and adolescents: a network approach to selective mutism.

BACKGROUND: Silence in certain situations represents the core symptom of selective mutism (SM). However, it is unclear what additional sympt … ghest centrality. We identified two communities (symptom cluster): (1) symptoms associated with the fear response of freezing, (2) symptoms associated with speech production and avoidance. SM network symptoms and SAD symptoms largely formed two separate symptom clusters, with only selectivity of speaking behavior (more talkative at home and taciturn or …

Associations between body image, social physique anxiety, and dating anxiety in heterosexual emerging adults.

Studies have suggested that body image is associated with dating anxiety, but are limited by small sample sizes, singular operationalisations of body image, and a lack of consideration of the concurrent effects of social physique anxiety. To overcome these gaps in the literature, we asked an online sample of 501 heterosexual emerging adults from the United Kingdom (age M = 21.16, 50.3% women) to complete measures of multidimensional body image, social physique anxiety, and dating anxiety. Correlational analyses indicated that more negative body image and social physique anxiety were both signi

Mind's eye: The impact of spider presence and cognitive therapy on size estimation biases in spider phobia.

The present study assessed the circumstances under which size estimation biases in spider phobia occur, and whether such biases are modifiab … ut not during, the BAT. Size estimates after, but not during, the BAT correlated with self-reported fear but not avoidance. Size estimates after, but not during, the BAT reduced from the first to second BAT in phobic women; an effect evident in both the cognitive therapy and placebo treatment conditions. Changes in size estimates were not associated wi …

Scared, powerless, insulted and embarrassed: hesitancy towards vaccines among caregivers in Cavite Province, the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have highlighted that vaccine hesitancy (VH) is among the most important threats to global health, especially in … tructure our results. RESULTS: Among the reasons for delay or refusal of childhood vaccinations, a fear of side effects emerged as the most salient concern, exacerbated by previous negative experiences (including trauma) from a dengue vaccine controversy in 2017. Respondents cited the dengue vaccine controversy as they expressed reluctance (regarding …

Detection of a temporal structure in the rat behavioural response to an aversive stimulation in the emotional object recognition (EOR) task.

Aim of the research was to investigate whether a temporal structure could be detected in the behavioural response to an aversive stimulation. A fear-related memory task was used in rats, placed in a modified version of the Novel Object Recognition task known as Emotional Object Recognition task, i.e. a behavioural assay that orbits around the declarative memory for an aversive experience. To this purpose, twelve male Wistar rats, divided in two groups (Control and Aversive memory), observed after 4 h (OR4h) and after 24 h (OR24h) from the delivery of an aversive stimulation, associated to a sp…

Falls prevention at GP practices: a description of daily practice.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) can be considered the designated professionals to identify high fall risk and to guide older people … . If the GP confirmed this, the GP completed a short questionnaire about patient's fall history and fear of falling (FOF), and the fall preventive care provided. RESULTS: The GPs completed questionnaires regarding 1394 frail older patients aged ≥75. Of 20% of these patients, the GPs did not know whether they had experienced a fall or not. The GPs did …

Review of the Evaluation and Treatment of Vasovagal Reactions in Outpatient Procedures.

BACKGROUND: A vasovagal reaction is a commonly encountered event in outpatient procedures. There is a paucity of discussion on vasovagal reactions (VVRs) in the dermatologic surgery literature. However, recent investigations in the physiology, evaluation, and treatment of VVRs have been reported in other specialties. OBJECTIVE: A comprehensive review of the physiology, evaluation, treatment, and prevention of VVRs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search as performed using the PubMed/MEDLINE databases. Search terms included "vasovagal," "vasovagal reaction," "syncope," "reflex syncope," "neurocardio

Anxiety Symptoms and Disorders in College Students With ADHD.

Objective: This study examined anxiety symptoms and disorders in college students with ADHD. Method: Forty-six college students with ADHD and a matched group of students without ADHD participated. Participants completed self-report measures of anxiety symptoms and associated features, including worry, maladaptive beliefs about worry, panic symptoms, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and self-efficacy. Participants also completed a diagnostic interview to assess lifetime and current anxiety disorders. Results: Participants with ADHD endorsed more maladaptive beliefs about worry, mo

Association between attention bias to threat and anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research links threat-related attention biases to anxiety symptoms in adults, whereas extant findings on threat biases in youth are limited and mixed. Inconsistent findings may arise due to substantial methodological variability and limited sample sizes, emphasizing the need for systematic research on large samples. The aim of this report is to examine the association between threat bias and pediatric anxiety symptoms using standardized measures in a large, international, multi-site youth sample. METHODS: A total of 1,291 children and adolescents from seven research s

Digital Media, Anxiety, and Depression in Children.

There are growing concerns about the impact of digital technologies on children's emotional well-being, particularly regarding fear, anxiety, and depression. The 2 mental health categories of anxiety and depression will be discussed together because there is significant symptom overlap and comorbidity. Early research has explored the impact of traditional media (eg, television, movies) on children's acute fears, which can result in anxieties and related sleep disturbances that are difficult to remedy. More recent research deals with the interactive nature of newer media, especially social medi…

Research Review: Neural response to threat in children, adolescents, and adults after child maltreatment - a quantitative meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is common and has long-term consequences for affective function. Investigations of neural consequences of maltreatment have focused on the amygdala. However, developmental neuroscience indicates that other brain regions are also likely to be affected by child maltreatment, particularly in the social information processing network (SIPN). We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis to: confirm that maltreatment is related to greater bilateral amygdala activation in a large sample that was pooled across studies; investigate other SIPN structures that are likely candi

Cardiophobia: a paradigmatic behavioural model of heart-focused anxiety and non-anginal chest pain.

Cardiophobia is defined as an anxiety disorder of persons characterized by repeated complaints of chest pain, heart palpitations, and other somatic sensations accompanied by fears of having a heart attack and of dying. Persons with cardiophobia focus attention on their heart when experiencing stress and arousal, perceive its function in a phobic manner, and continue to believe that they suffer from an organic heart problem despite repeated negative medical tests. In order to reduce anxiety, they seek continuous reassurance, make excessive use of medical facilities, and avoid activities believe…
