Association of Vegetables-Fruits Dietary Patterns with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Mediating Effects of Gut Microbiota.

(1) Introduction: Previous studies have found that diet can change gut microbiota, thereby affecting metabolic health. However, research on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is still limited. Our study aimed to explore the mediating role of gut microbiota in the relationship between dietary patterns and GDM. (2) Methods: In this case-control study, 107 women with GDM at 24-28 weeks of gestation and 78 healthy pregnant women were enrolled. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary intake over the previous month. Mediation analysis was performed to explo

The effect of novel mosquito bite prevention tools on Anopheles minimus landing and key secondary endpoints: semi-field evaluations in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) aims to eliminate all human malaria by 2030 and is making substantial progress toward this goal, with malaria increasingly confined to forest foci. These transmission foci are predominantly inhabited by ethnic minorities, local populations, and rural mobile and migrant populations working in mining and agriculture. The recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) on malaria elimination states that small population groups which constitute a large proportion of the malaria transmission reservoir should benefit from targeted strategies to r

Insights into the biology and insecticide susceptibility of the secondary malaria vector Anopheles parensis in an area with long-term use of insecticide-treated nets in northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The Anopheles funestus group includes at least 11 sibling species, with Anopheles funestus Giles being the most studied and significant malaria vector. Other species, like Anopheles parensis, are understudied despite their potential role in transmission. This article provides insights into the biology and insecticide susceptibility of An. parensis, with observations of its densities in northwestern Tanzania. METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected in three villages in Misungwi district, northwestern Tanzania, using CDC light traps and battery-powered aspirators indoors and human-baited

Chromium Nanoparticles Together with a Switch Away from High-Fat/Low-Fiber Dietary Habits Enhances the Pro-Healthy Regulation of Liver Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation in Obese Rats.

The study on Wistar rats was conducted to investigate the effects of a pharmacologically relevant dose 0.3 mg/kg body weight of chromium supplementation (commonly used picolinate or novel form as nanoparticles) and switching away from obesogenic dietary habits on the parameters of lipid metabolism, inflammation, and oxidative stress in liver and plasma. Favorable effects related to dietary changes from the obesogenic diet were considerably enhanced when the diet was supplemented with chromium nanoparticles. This combination exerted the strongest fat content and cholesterol reduction in the liv

Fear of weight gain during cognitive behavioral therapy for binge-spectrum eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Fear of weight gain may play a central role in maintaining eating disorders (EDs), but research on the role of fear of weight gain during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) for binge-spectrum EDs is sparse. We examined changes in fear of weight gain during CBT-E for binge-spectrum EDs. We investigated whether fear of weight gain predicted loss of control (LOC) eating or weight change. METHODS: Participants (N = 63) were adults of any gender recruited as part of a larger trial. Participants received 12 sessions of CBT-E, completed diagnostic assessments at pre-, mid-, and post-treat

Major dietary patterns of community dwelling adults and their associations with impaired blood glucose and central obesity in Eastern Ethiopia: Diet-disease epidemiological study.

BACKGROUNDS: Unhealthy dietary intake is an important preventable risk factor for obesity and impaired blood glucose (IBG), ultimately increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases. When compared to individual food intakes, dietary patterns are a stronger predictor of health outcomes and should be systematically evaluated where such evidence is lacking. This study evaluated dietary patterns and their association with the risk of central obesity and IBG among adults. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted among 501 randomly-selected adults from Eastern Ethiopia. Data was collected

Sluggish cognitive tempo, eating habits, and daytime sleepiness in obese adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Rates of obesity have risen steeply in the western world in all age groups. Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) is characterized by a cluster of symptoms. Daytime sleepiness, commonly seen in obesity, may share a similar origin with sleepiness and daydreaming symptoms of SCT. This study aims to investigate the relationship between obesity, SCT, daytime sleepiness, and eating habits. METHOD: Adolescents, aged between 10-17 years, with a BMI >95th centile, were recruited to the study. Clinical interviews were supplemented with standardized questionnaires. RESULTS: Of the 35 adolescents,

Blood meal profile and positivity rate with malaria parasites among different malaria vectors in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening public health problem globally with particularly heavy burden in the sub-Saharan Africa including Sudan. The understanding of feeding preference of malaria vectors on different hosts is a major challenge for hindering the transmission cycle of malaria. In this study, blood meals taken by blood-fed Anopheles mosquitoes collected from the field in malaria endemic areas of Sudan were analysed for source of blood meal and malaria parasite presence. METHODS: Anopheles mosquitoes were collected from different regions in Sudan: Khartoum state, Sennar state,

Mosquito survey in Mauritania: Detection of Rift Valley fever virus and dengue virus and the determination of feeding patterns.

In Mauritania, several mosquito-borne viruses have been reported that can cause devastating diseases in animals and humans. However, monitoring data on their occurrence and local distribution are limited. Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod-borne virus that causes major outbreaks throughout the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. The first Rift Valley fever (RVF) epidemic in Mauritania occurred in 1987 and since then the country has been affected by recurrent outbreaks of the disease. To gain information on the occurrence of RVFV as well as other mosquito-borne viruses and

A comparison of negative affect and disinhibited eating between children with and without parents with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Children whose parents have type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at high-risk for developing T2D. In youth, negative affect has been shown to predict insulin resistance (IR), and disinhibited-eating behaviors have been linked to IR. It is unknown if youth with a parent with T2D (P-T2D) report greater psychological and behavioral symptoms than those without a P-T2D. OBJECTIVE: To compare youth with and without a P-T2D on symptoms of negative affect and disinhibited-eating. METHODS: Nine-hundred thirty-two youth (13.3 ± 2.6 years; BMIz 1.06 ± 1.06; 67.8% female; 53.6% people of color; 10.7% w

Effects of Diet on Acne and Its Response to Treatment.

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is still evolving. It is known that multiple factors impact acne pathophysiology, including genetic, hormonal, inflammatory, and environmental influences. Because of its implications in many of these factors, diet has been a part of the acne discussion for decades. Several studies have evaluated the significance of the glycemic index of various foods and glycemic load in patients with acne, demonstrating individuals with acne who consume diets with a low glycemic load have reduced acne lesions compared with individuals on high glycemic loa

Manta-like planktivorous sharks in Late Cretaceous oceans.

The ecomorphological diversity of extinct elasmobranchs is incompletely known. Here, we describe Aquilolamna milarcae, a bizarre probable planktivorous shark from early Late Cretaceous open marine deposits in Mexico. Aquilolamna, tentatively assigned to Lamniformes, is characterized by hypertrophied, slender pectoral fins. This previously unknown body plan represents an unexpected evolutionary experimentation with underwater flight among sharks, more than 30 million years before the rise of manta and devil rays (Mobulidae), and shows that winglike pectoral fins have evolved independently in tw

Influence of dietary habits on depression among patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A cross-sectional study using KURAMA cohort database.

OBJECTIVE: Although mental disorder is one of the most common comorbidities of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is known as a critical influence on RA remission rates, there is little knowledge regarding a possible therapeutic strategy for depression or anxiety in a RA population. Most recently, clinical evidence of dietary improvement for depression has emerged in a general population, but the relationship between dietary habits and mental disorder has not been investigated in RA. The purpose of this study is to elucidate clinical associations between mental disorder (depression/anxiety), dietar
