Oropouche virus (OROV) is an orthobunyavirus endemic in the Brazilian Amazon that has caused numerous outbreaks of febrile disease since its discovery in 1955. During 2024, Oropouche fever spread from the endemic regions of Brazil into non-endemic areas and other Latin American and Caribbean countries, resulting in 13,014 confirmed infections. Similarly to other orthobunyaviruses, OROV can undergo genetic reassortment events with itself as well as other viruses. This occurred during this current outbreak, resulting in novel strains with increased pathogenicity and levels of transmission. For t

Prenatal uptake of valproic acid (VPA) was associated with increased risk of fetal cardiac anomalies and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but uptake of VPA is considered the only effective treatment for epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Up until now, little is known about the effect of VPA on maternal - fetal heart rate (HR) coupling patterns; therefore, this study aims at studying such patterns in mice on embryonic day 15.5 (E15.5). At E12.5, 8 mothers were injected with VPA (VPA group) and another 8 mothers were injected with saline (control group). At E15.5, electrocardiogram (ECG)

Thyroid hormones have a wide range of effects on growth, differentiation, evolution, metabolism, and physiological function of all tissues, including the vascular bed. In this study, the effect of fetal hypothyroidism on impairment of aortic vasorelaxation responses in adulthood was investigated with emphasis on possible involvement of hydrogen sulfide (H2S)/nitric oxide interaction. Two groups of female rats were selected. After mating and observation of vaginal plaque, one group received propylthiouracil (200 ppm in drinking water) until the end of pregnancy and another group had no propylth

Background Women with chronic hypertension face a 5- to 6-fold increased risk of developing preeclampsia compared with normotensive women. Angiogenic markers, especially soluble fms-like kinase 1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF), were identified as clinically useful markers predicting the development of preeclampsia, but data on the prediction of superimposed preeclampsia are scarce. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio for delivery because of superimposed preeclampsia in women with chronic hypertension. Methods and Results This retrospective

Previous findings have confirmed that prenatal nicotine exposure (PNE) leads to retarded cartilage development in the fetal growth plate. It is characterized by insufficient matrix synthesis and decreased expression of matrix phenotype genes aggrecan (ACAN) and Col2A1 in the fetal growth plate chondrocytes; however, the specific molecular mechanism is yet unclear. This study intends to clarify the specific molecular mechanism of fetal osteochondral retardation caused by PNE through animal and cellular experiments. The present study demonstrated that in male offspring of the PNE group (the preg

BACKGROUND: The effects of neuraxial analgesia on fetal heart tracings have been studied in "Работает" pregnancies. Our objective was to compare the impact of intrapartum epidural analgesia (EA) versus combined spinal epidural analgesia (CSE) on fetal heart rate changes in pregnancies at risk for uteroplacental insufficiency (UPI).
METHODS: Singleton pregnancies diagnosed with chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension and/or preeclampsia, and/or fetal growth restriction (FGR) and receiving neuraxial analgesia intrapartum from 2012 to 2015 were studied retrospectively. The primary outcome

The hypoxia of high-altitude (HA) residence increases the risk of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and preeclampsia 3-fold, augmenting perinatal morbidity and mortality and the risk for childhood and adult disease. Currently, no effective therapies exist to prevent these vascular disorders of pregnancy. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) is an important regulator of uteroplacental vascular development and function and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of IUGR and preeclampsia. Here, we used a model of HA pregnancy in mice to determine whether hypoxia-induced

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is associated with adverse fetal outcomes, including microcephaly, growth restriction, and fetal demise. Type I interferons (IFNs) are essential for host resistance against ZIKV, and IFN-α/β receptor (IFNAR)-deficient mice are highly susceptible to ZIKV infection. Severe fetal growth restriction with placental damage and fetal resorption is observed after ZIKV infection of type I IFN receptor knockout (Ifnar1-/-) dams mated with wild-type sires, resulting in fetuses with functional type I IFN signaling. The role of type I IFNs in limiting or mediati

OBJECTIVES: Congenital heart block (CHB) develops in 1-2% of anti-Ro/SSA-positive pregnancies and has a recurrence rate of 12-20%, which indicates that factors other than maternal autoantibodies are crucial for CHB to occur. Here, we aimed to evaluate the influence of factors previously associated with CHB on the occurrence of milder forms of fetal cardiac conduction disturbances, shown to occur in up to 30% of anti-Ro/SSA-positive pregnancies, and on neonatal outcome in a large cohort of prospectively followed pregnancies.
METHODS: The association of maternal age, season of the year and hist

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies show that analysis of the fetal electrocardiographic (FECG) ST waveform at term gives important information on the myocardial response to intrapartum asphyxia. However, it is not known whether the preterm fetus responds in a similar fashion. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the FECGST response to umbilical cord occlusion in the preterm fetal sheep.
METHODS: Fetal sheep at midgestation were subjected to 25 min umbilical cord occlusion (n = 7) and compared to controls (n = 5). Changes in the FECGST waveform were recorded together with arterial bloo

During fetal development, there is a continued demand for large numbers of primitive and mature hematopoietic cells. This demand may require that all potential hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) migrate effectively to emerging hematopoietic sites and subsequently contribute to blood cell production, regardless of their cell cycle status. We recently established that umbilical cord blood cells in the G(1) phase of the cell cycle have a repopulating potential similar to cells in G(0), suggesting that cycling prenatal and neonatal HSCs may have the same functional capabilities described for quiescen…

The diagnosis of long QT syndrome (LQTS) in utero presents many challenges for clinicians, and there is high risk for intrauterine fetal demise as life-threatening arrhythmias develop secondary to QT prolongation. We describe a challenging case of a fetus presenting with sinus bradycardia and second-degree atrioventricular block with episodes of ventricular tachycardia. A prenatal diagnosis of LQTS was suspected given the fetal echocardiographic findings of a short ventricular relaxation time, due to extremely prolonged refractory period. The patient was delivered emergently due to Torsade's w

The causes of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) and fetal malformations are multifactorial and unclear in most cases. Environmental, maternal, and genetic factors have been shown to contribute to these defects. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) is widely used to detect genetic variations associated with human diseases and has recently been successfully applied to unveil genetic causes of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA) and fetal malformations. Here, we review the current discovery and diagnosis strategies to identify the underlying pathogenic mutations of URSA and fetal malform

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is a frequent diagnosis during the first year of life. However, it is an uncommon and very rare pathology in neonates and premature infants.
CASE REPORTS: Two full term neonates presented an antenatal intussusception associated with fetal ascites; another premature infant developed an intussusception at the age of 15 days. In the three cases the diagnosis of intussusception had only been established during the laparotomy. A recent review of the literature revealed 13 cases of antenatal intussusception, one of these being associated with fetal ascites.

There are several infections in adults that warrant special consideration in pregnant women given the potential fetal consequences. Among these are toxoplasmosis, parvovirus B19, and cytomegalovirus. These infections have an important impact on the developing fetus, depending on the timing of infection. This article reviews the modes of transmission as well as maternal and neonatal effects of each of these infections. In addition, the article outlines recommended testing, fetal surveillance, and treatment where indicated.

Two unrelated children with the fetal alcohol syndrome are described. Features of the syndrome include mental deficiency, growth delay, and craniofacial, limb and cardiac anomalies. The finding of this spectrum of abnormalities raises the possibility of alcohol ingestion during pregnancy. The deleterious effects of alcohol on the developing fetus are emphasized. In view of the high prevalence of alcoholism in this country the fetal syndrome must be regarded as a serious and preventable cause of morbidity.

INTRODUCTION: The risk of delivering a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonate is increased after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Because glucose is the foetus's primary energy source and postprandial hypoglycemia is common after RYGB, the Bariatric surgery And consequences for Mother and Baby In pregnancy (BAMBI) study examined associations between trimester specific maternal hypoglycemia and offspring birthweight as well as other perinatal outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three pregnant women with RYGB and 23 BMI- and parity-matched controls were followed prospectively with continuo
