In this small study, emergence of complement-fixing alloantibody in the early post-operative period was associated with clinical antibody-mediated rejection that required treatment. It appears that IgG3 alloantibody may be a significant determinant of poorer allograft outcome and failure to respond to PE therapy. The aim was to report my own experiences of the surgical treatment of ciliary body melanoma. 42 patients were treated by trasnscleral resection of melanoma between January 1995 and June 2001. Additional rutenium brachytherapy was performed in 29 cases. Intraoperative complications included bleeding (3 cases), vitreous loss (4) and retinal detachment (2). Propionibacterium acnes strains were isolated from corneal tissue removed by keratoplastic surgery from patients with corneal dystrophy or bullous keratopathy. A manganese containing superoxide dismutase was purified to homogeneity from the venom of scorpion Heterometrus fulvipes by ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The renal effects of diabetes mellitus and cadmium (Cd), separately or in combination, were investigated in unilaterally nephrectomized female Sprague-Dawley rats. Diabetes was induced by injection of streptozotocin and Cd was administered in drinking water at a concentration of 100 p.p.m. for 2.5 months. We have constructed a new screening system for detecting microbial products that enhance host resistance against bacterial infection. It was found that a new compound with such activity is produced by a soil isolate classified as Nocardia sp. SANK 60484. A micromethod for estimating free levels of phenobarbitone, phenytoin and carbamazepine in patients' sera is described. Serum samples are subjected to a process of ultrafiltration, the filtrates treated with acetonitrile and the drug concentration quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. We detected an antibody to calmodulin (CaM) in sera from patients with Graves' disease. Four sera out of 300 from patients with Graves' disease demonstrated increased CaM binding activity as compared with 300 sera from normal subjects, while no binding activity was detected in sera from autoimmune thyroiditis. Intravenous injection of high doses of bacterial derived growth hormone (1 and 2 mg Somatonorm) did not affect the plasma levels of glucagon, insulin and free fatty acids in fasted and fed rabbits.
