BACKGROUND: Although the relatively high incidence of coronal fractures in the supracondylar-intercondylar fractures is well established, little is currently known about the morphology of those fractures. Herein, we characterized the coronal fractures in AO/OTA type 33-C3 and assessed their differences with Busch-Hoffa fractures (33-B3).
METHODS: We retrospectively collected 61 cases of AO/OTA type 33-B or C fractures with coronal plane fragments and generated three-dimensional fracture maps of those with coronal fractures based on CT imaging and measured angle α (the angle between the corona

BACKGROUND: The indications for operative treatment of scapula fractures have been debated over the past decade. Our purpose was to determine 1) the incidence and trends in the operative treatment of scapula fractures, 2) the incidence of conversion from operative fixation to total or hemi-shoulder arthroplasty (THSA) and 3) rates of associated injuries in scapula fractures. We hypothesized that the operative treatment of scapula fractures is increasing over time and that scapula fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) would have increased risk for conversion to THSA

BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures are often associated with poor outcomes. Both open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and radial head arthroplasty (RHA) might be considered in operative cases. This study aimed to compare long-term patient-reported functional outcomes among patients with operatively treated radial head fractures.
METHODS: A cross sectional study conducted at a Level I trauma center was used to identify patients with a radial head fracture who underwent ORIF or RHA between 2006 and 2018, and agreed to complete a survey in 2020. The primary outcome measure was the Quick Di

A 29-year-old athlete suffered from vague hip pain during the preparation for a marathon competition. During the competition, severe pain forced him to drop out after 29 kilometres. He underwent conventional x-rays immediately, which showed a displaced lateral fracture of the femoral neck. The fracture was immediately treated with a dynamic hip screw. A few days later, the patient was discharged. He returned to sport upon completion of treatment. Vague hip pain after exercise may be an indicator for a rare stress fracture of the femoral neck and should be taken into consideration in athletes.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the patella can lead to substantial functional impairments due to its crucial function in the extensor mechanism of the knee joint. Patellar fractures are associated with a comparatively high complication rate depending on the osteosynthesis procedure used. Despite established diagnostics and various osteosynthesis procedures they are still a therapeutic challenge.
OBJECTIVE: This article gives an overview of the change in the treatment of patellar fractures and highlights the importance of comprehensive diagnostics and fracture-adapted treatment, especially for the i

In this study, tibial shaft fracture has been treated with implants as numerically to investigate the stress behavior and the effect of plate material, position and length under pressure load. Plates of stainless steel, titanium alloy(Ti6Al4V), or CF-PEEK(CF50) were used to fix the tibial shaft comminuted fracture in different location and different working length. The maximum stress, the maximum micromotion of fracture and the stress shielding of cortex bone were analyzed. CF50 is more ideal biomechanical fixation material than traditional metal material for the treatment of tibial shaft comm

OBJECTIVE: This present study was conducted to determine the structural-mechanical stability of various fixation constructs through finite element (FE) analysis following simulation of a basicervical fracture and to introduce the clinical implications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We simulated fracture models by using a right synthetic femur (SAWBONES®). We imported the implant models into ANSYS® for placement in an optimal position. Five assembly models were constructed: (1) multiple cancellous screws (MCS), (2) FNS (femoral neck system®), (3) dynamic hip screw (DHS), (4) DHS with anti-rotation 7.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic exercises could potentially enhance the healing of distal radius fractures (DRFs) treated with volar locking plate (VLP). However, the healing outcomes are highly dependant on the patient-specific fracture geometries (e.g., gap size) and the loading conditions at the fracture site (e.g., loading frequency) resulted from different types of therapeutic exercises. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different loading frequencies induced by therapeutic exercises on the biomechanical microenvironment of the fracture site and the transport

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the contribution that tension-relieving sutures, placed between a proximal humeral locking plate and the rotator cuff muscles, had on preventing varus malalignment in an osteoporotic 2-part proximal humerus fracture model.
METHODS: A 2-part fracture model was created in 8 cadaveric specimens and then fixed with a lateral locking plate. A custom shoulder testing system was used to increase loading through the supraspinatus (SS) tendon to drive varus deformity. Trials were performed with no suture placement; SS only; SS and subscapularis (SB); and SS, SB, and infraspinat

CASE: A right hand dominant 10-year-old girl presenting with an open right distal humerus fracture dislocation involving complete medial column bone loss and a >50% trochlea defect was reconstructed with a size-matched, fresh distal humerus osteochondral allograft. Successful bony integration and functional elbow range of motion were achieved.
CONCLUSION: A paucity of literature exists to guide the treatment of pediatric distal humerus fractures with significant bone loss. Despite complications associated with osteochondral allografts, they provide a reasonable treatment option to preserve el

Humans come into contact with goats in wild settings. If a goat feels threatened, it may address the perceived threat violently. While out walking, a 55-y-old man was attacked by an escaped domestic goat. Much as goats interact with each other, this goat pushed him over with its horns and then rose up on 2 legs to come back down on him with its head. The man experienced a Schatzker VI bicondylar tibial plateau fracture that required external and then internal fixation. Besides his physical injuries, he experienced acute stress disorder, which is common after traumatic events. Acute stress reac

Background and Objectives: The stability of the pelvic ring mainly depends on the integrity of its posterior part. Percutaneous sacroiliac (SI) screws are widely implanted as standard of care treatment. The main risk factors for their fixation failure are related to vertical shear or transforaminal sacral fractures. The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical performance of fixations using one (Group 1) or two (Group 2) standard SI screws versus one SI screw with bone cement augmentation (Group 3). Materials and Methods: Unstable fractures of the pelvic ring (AO/OTA 61-C1.3, FFP IIc

CASE: A 41-year-old woman sustained a distal radius fracture with concomitant median nerve transection. The wound was consistent with an inside-to-outside mechanism with noted metaphyseal bone loss at the level of the median nerve injury. The median nerve was not amenable to primary repair, and given concern for inability to define the zone of the injury, the patient underwent delayed reconstruction of the nerve.
CONCLUSION: A review of the literature highlights the rare incidence of this combined injury that can be undetected or misdiagnosed as an acute carpal tunnel syndrome or stretch inju
