A 60-year-old woman with no subjective symptoms was admitted to our hospital because of chest radiograph abnormality detected by a health ex … asculitides, and granulomata which consisted of mainly lymphocytes, epithelioid cells and Langhans' giant cells. We here report a rare case of a patient with a limited form of Wegener's granulomatosis suffering from no subjective symptoms detected by a health examination.

We describe a case of granulomatous mycosis fungoides, tumor stage, mimicking sarcoidosis in an 82-year-old man with a 2-year history of skin disease. The final diagnosis was established after one of seven biopsy specimens showed a nongranulomatous histologic picture of patch-stage mycosis fungoides. Monoclonality was proven for the lymphocytic population by T-cell-receptor rearrangement studies. The unusually extensive granulomatous inflammation with huge giant cells surrounded by CD1a-positive cells in the other six biopsy specimens was suggestive of the histopathology of granulomatous slack…

A case of soft renal calculi with xanthogranulomatous change is reported. A 37-year-old female visited our hospital on February 4, 1992 complaining of frequency of urination and right lower abdominal pain. Under the clinical diagnosis of right renal calculi, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was attempted, but no sign of destruction was observed. Right pyelolithotomy was performed on June 8, 1992. Several soft calculi were removed from the right renal pelvis. Microscopic examination showed that the calculi were surrounded by a cell layer including foam cells and giant cells. In addition, t…

A common cause of malfunctioning ventricular shunts is the occlusion of either tip by a variety of normal or reactive tissues and foreign substances. A six-year-old girl with communicating hydrocephalus and a meningomyelocele, a 48-year-old man with an ependymoma and an 11-year-old boy with a pineal germinoma had multinucleated histiocytic giant cells and ependymal cells in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from their ventricular shunts. These cellular changes were interpreted as the cytologic counterpart of the foreign-body inflammatory reactions often seen histologically on occluded shunt tips. N…

A case of retrovirus-associated adult T-cell lymphoma studied by monoclonal markers and ultrastructure is reported. The patient, who was bor … udy of the lymph node showed a diffuse lymphoma, encompassing a wide range of cell sizes, including giant cells. In view of the morphological heterogeneity of this condition, immunological and viral studies are recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

The histopathology of erythema nodosum is discussed with reference to the literature and of 19 cases of our clinic. There is a significant v … o tell from the histological picture how long the erythema nodosum had been present. Multinucleated giant cells which are often found in the septal connective tissue are seen even in relatively acute cases.

Pleural nodules or sheets of histiocytes, admixed with eosinophils, giant cells, and other inflammatory cells are observed frequently in patients with spontaneous pneumothorax. This reaction, designated reactive eosinophillic pleuritis (REP), can closely resemble eosinophilic granuloma. Reactive eosinophilic pleuritis was found in pleural tissue of 22 of 57 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax in whom tissue was available for study. None of these patients had clinical or radiographic evidence of interstitial lung disease. Follow-up of 20 patients with REP ranged from six months to five years…

This is the description of the case of a 22 year old patient with low back pain and sciatica on the right side investigated by lumbar Dimer-X-Myelography. The result of the examination was an impression in the contrast column at the L5/S 1 level on the right. At operation an intradural tumour, plum-sized, well-defined, and blue-black in colour, was found and removed. Histologically the tumour was melanotic and of high cellular density, with spindle-shaped cells as well as giant cells, with round nuclei, considerable polymorphism, and atypical mitoses. On the basis of the operation finding, the…

Major aphthae are usually located on the dorsum of the tongue, the mucosal surface of the lips and the palate. They are large, round or oval ulcers, with a whitish-grey bed, well-defined borders and erythematous halo. They are very often accompanied by severe pain. Major aphthae can take up to four months to heal, often with a scar. Relapses are possible. We present a case of giant major aphtha that was previously diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma.

Iliotibial band pathologies can result in lateral knee pain. These are commonly seen in runners and cyclists. Lateral knee pain following knee arthroplasty can be due to distal iliotibial band enthesopathy or impingement by the femoral component. Cementoplasty is a common procedure performed during treatment of osseous lesions. We describe a case of ITB friction syndrome due to small focus of cement following cementoplasty for GCT (giant cell tumour).

We report five cases of glucocorticoid-responsive mouth symptoms in polymyalgia rheumatica/giant cell arteritis (GCA); three cases of tongue pain exacerbated by hot/spicy food, a case of scalp pain made worse by eating hot/spicy food and a case of sore tongue as a presenting feature of GCA. These cases emphasize the importance of asking about mouth symptoms and changes in taste when evaluating patients with suspected GCA.

Brown tumor is a focal lesion differentiated from other giant cell tumor by the presence of hyperparathyroidism. These lesions are non-neoplastic and they appear as a mass with partly cystic and partly solid areas. Clinically they are slow growing lesions that can be locally destructive resulting in variety of symptoms such as significant bone swelling, pain and pathological fracture. Here is a female patient of 26 years with brown tumor involving mandible, maxilla and left knee joint.

Polymyalgia rheumatica should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients over 50 years old who present with bilateral achiness and stiffness in the shoulders or hips or both. It usually responds quickly to once-daily, low-dose prednisone, but some patients require treatment for several years. Polymyalgia rheumatica frequently overlaps with giant cell arteritis, and patients must be followed closely for development of complications from this condition, especially aortitis.

An 85-year-old woman with Alzheimer's dementia was hospitalized because of prolonged fever, breathlessness, and generalized pain. Blood analysis showed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and temporal artery biopsy showed giant cell arteritis. Prednisone therapy was instituted, and the patient's condition partially improved. Incidentally, abdominal radiographs revealed a sewing needle in the right upper quadrant, and computed tomography (CT) showed that the needle was lodged in the liver parenchyma.

A young man presented with multiple Subcutaneous nodules over scalp, hand, feet and osteolytic lesions of small bones of hand. Clinically and radiologically he was diagnosed as a case of Giant Cell Tumour. Aspiration cytology and biopsy proved it to be rhinosporidiosis. Epidemiological study revealed that he perhaps contracted this infection as an occupational hazard. This is the third reported case of osteolytic lesions due to rhinosporidiosis. Diagnostic dilemmas of subcutaneous and osteolytic rhinosporidiosis are discussed.

In a 66-year-old patient morphologic features of a pulmonary veno-occlusive disease were found. Besides, a striking foreign body giant cell reaction with phagocytosis of altered elastic tissue in totally or partially occluded venous blood vessels resembled the so-called pulmonary sideroelastosis, an entity originally described by Ceelen. In this case report, a possible pathogenetic relation between sideroelastosis pulmonum and pulmonary veno-occlusive disease is discussed.

We report a case of temporal arteritis associated with anicteric cholestasis. Serial sections of a transthoracic needle biopsy of the liver revealed giant-cell arteritis in medium-sized hepatic arteries and cholangitis in adjacent bile ducts. The literature reveals that similar pathologic features have only exceptionally been observed in liver biopsies. These lesions may account for liver function disturbances commonly seen in temporal arteritis or polymyalgia rheumatica.
