Intergenerational effects of child maltreatment on adolescents' anxiety and depression in Ethiopia: the important mediating and moderating roles of current psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is widespread around the world, and one continent with particularly high rates is Africa. Research in high- and middle-income countries shows the cascading effect of parental history of child abuse and neglect on adolescents' maltreatment and, in turn, on mental health problems. This cascade has been reported in young children but has rarely been studied in parent-adolescent dyads or in low-income countries (LICs). The goal of this study was to test intergenerational associations of child abuse and neglect and to examine how these experiences are in turn associated with

Testing the efficacy of WORK-ON: vocational rehabilitation for people with chronic inflammatory arthritis in Denmark-protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Among people with chronic inflammatory arthritis (IA), up to 40% lose their job in the first few years after diagnosis of this condition and are hence at high risk of being permanently excluded from the labour market. Therefore, we developed a new context-specific vocational rehabilitation (VR) for people with IA. This 6 month VR (WORK-ON) includes the following: (1) an initial assessment and goal setting by a coordinating occupational therapist, who supports cooperation and coordination between relevant partners and navigation across primary and secondary care, (2) four group se

Development of an Italian National Epidemiological Register on Endometriosis Based on Administrative Data.

Background/Objectives: Endometriosis is a female chronic inflammatory disease in which endometrial tissue develops outside the uterine cavity. It is a complex pathology, which significantly contributes to morbidity in premenopausal women, leading to chronic pain, infertility, and subfertility negatively impacting physical and emotional well-being and the overall quality of life. The public health burden of endometriosis remains elusive and challenging to determine, and this uncertainty can lead to inadequate healthcare services and treatments. The objective was to estimate the incidence and pr

AI-assisted detection for chest X-rays (AID-CXR): a multi-reader multi-case study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A chest X-ray (CXR) is the most common imaging investigation performed worldwide. Advances in machine learning and computer vision technologies have led to the development of several artificial intelligence (AI) tools to detect abnormalities on CXRs, which may expand diagnostic support to a wider field of health professionals. There is a paucity of evidence on the impact of AI algorithms in assisting healthcare professionals (other than radiologists) who regularly review CXR images in their daily practice. AIMS: To assess the utility of an AI-based CXR interpretation tool in ass

Statistical analysis plan for the PRO B study: open-label, superiority randomised controlled trial of alarm-based patient-reported outcome monitoring in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: With an increasing collection of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in oncological patients, there is still a lack of standardised strategies on how to interpret and use these data in patient care. Prior research has shown support for the use of digital PRO monitoring together with alarm systems to notify clinicians when the PRO values are deteriorating. This system has demonstrated advantages in improving HRQoL and increasing survival rates among oncology patients. Hence, we designed the PRO B study, a superiority multi-centre random

A critical review of diagnostic and prognostic markers of chronic hepatitis B infection.

A major worldwide health concern, chronic hepatitis B necessitates precise prognostic and diagnostic indicators for clinical guidance. This article highlights the clinical importance and current issues of the major markers used in both the detection and prognosis of chronic hepatitis B. An important indicator of an ongoing and persistent infection is the hepatitis B surface antigen. Hepatitis B virus DNA quantification monitoring aids in assessing viral load and hepatic cancer risk. While limited evidence of liver damage is provided by alanine aminotransferase levels, the hepatitis B core anti

A longitudinal study of the association of epidural anesthesia and low-dose synthetic oxytocin regimens with breast milk supply and breastfeeding rates.

Breastfeeding is known to improve maternal and child health. However, epidural anesthesia (EDA) and synthetic oxytocin (synOT) are suggested to have negative effects on breastfeeding. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of intrapartum synOT and EDA on breast milk supply, breastfeeding rates, and maternal salivary oxytocin levels. Women were recruited during pregnancy or after birth at a single hospital. Data were collected at 3 days postpartum (T1), 1 month postpartum (T2), and 4 months postpartum (T3) on 83 low-risk primiparous women who planned to breastfeed for at least 12 week

Hepatitis C virus seroprevalence, testing, and treatment capacity in public health facilities in Ghana, 2016-2021; A multi-centre cross-sectional study.

The current burden of Hepatitis C virus infection and the availability of HCV-related services in Ghana are not well described. Previous estimates on HCV seroprevalence in the country are outdated. This study investigated the HCV seroprevalence and testing and treatment capacity in Ghana. A multi-centre cross-sectional study was conducted in which laboratory and blood bank registers from 17 public healthcare institutions in Ghana were reviewed. A survey on cost and availability of HCV-related testing and treatment was also performed. Crude and pooled estimates of HCV seroprevalence, frequency

Interprofessional staff perspectives on the adoption of or black box technology and simulations to improve patient safety: a multi-methods survey.

INTRODUCTION: Medical errors still plague healthcare. Operating Room Black Box (ORBB) and ORBB-simulation (ORBBSIM) are innovative emerging technologies which continuously capture as well as categorize intraoperative data, team information, and audio-visual files, in effort to improve objective quality measures. ORBB and ORBBSIM have an opportunity to improve patient safety, yet a paucity of implementation literature exists. Overcoming implementation barriers is critical. This study sought to obtain rich insights while identifying facilitators and barriers to adoption of ORBB and ORBBSIM in al

Deriving and interpreting population size estimates for adolescent and young key populations at higher risk of HIV transmission: Men who have sex with men and females who sell sex.

Population sizes of adolescent (15- to 19-years) and young (20 to 24-years) key populations at risk for HIV transmission are essential for developing effective national HIV control strategies. We present new population size estimates of adolescent and young men who have sex with men and females who sell sex from 184 countries in nine UNICEF regions using UNAIDS published population size estimations submitted by national governments to derive 15-24-year-old population proportions based on the size of equivalent adult general populations. Imputed sizes based on regional estimates were used for c

Neurolathyrism With Deep Vein Thrombosis and Bony Exostosis: Are They New Forms of Angiolathyrism and Osteolathyrism?

Lathyriasis or lathyrism is a form of upper motor neuron disease caused by the dietary intake of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus). It is an irreversible crippling disease with poor outcomes. The possible pathogenesis is attributed to a toxin present in the legume, i.e., BOAA (beta-n-oxalyl amino L-alanine). Lathyrism can also be associated with vascular involvement resulting in angiolathyrism, which is mediated by a toxin β-aminopropionitrile, and bony involvement resulting in osteolathyrism characterized by bone growth impairment. A 12-year-old male child presented to us with chronic myalgia and

Global prevalence of physical activity for children and adolescents; inconsistencies, research gaps, and recommendations: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: One of the strategic actions identified in the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity (PA) 2018-2030 is the enhancement of data systems and capabilities at national levels to support regular population surveillance of PA. Although national and international standardized surveillance of PA among children and adolescents has increased in recent years, challenges for the global surveillance of PA persist. The aims of this paper were to: (i) review, compare, and discuss the methodological inconsistencies in children and adolescents' physical activity prevalence estimates from intercon

Reopening a Student-Run Free Clinic During the COVID-19 Pandemic to Provide Care for People Experiencing Homelessness.

PROBLEM: Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) provide health and outreach services to underserved populations while offering medical students opportunities for service and education. Many SRFCs were forced to suspend in-person operations in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before March 2020, JeffHOPE, the SRFC at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, operated an evening clinic at 5 locations throughout Philadelphia each week. APPROACH: JeffHOPE's response to challenges posed by COVID-19 focused on a redesign for a pilot clinic at a shelter site that expressed inter
