Meningococcal carriage in men who have sex with men presenting at a sexual health unit in Spain.

Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) is asymptomatically carried in the nasopharynx of 5-10% adults, although certain populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), exhibit a higher colonisation rate. Interest in Nm carriage has been renewed, owed to meningitis outbreaks within populations of MSM. The aim of this study was to characterise Nm isolates and risk factors for its carriage among MSM attending a sexual health unit. A retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken between June 2018 and December 2021. We took anal, oropharyngeal, urethral, and blood samples as part of the sexually tr

Prevalence of Pretreatment HIV-1 Drug Resistance in Armenia in 2017-2018 and 2020-2021 following a WHO Survey.

The increased antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage of patients in the absence of routine genotyping tests and in the context of active labor migration highlight the importance of HIV-1 drug resistance (DR) surveillance in Armenia. We conducted a two-phase pretreatment DR (PDR) study in 2017-2018 (phase I; 120 patients) and 2020-2021 (phase II; 133 patients) according to the WHO-approved protocol. The analysis of HIV-1 genetic variants showed high degrees of viral diversity, with the predominance of A6. The prevalence of any PDR was 9.2% in phase I and 7.5% in phase II. PDR to protease inhibit

Self-Reported Combination HIV Prevention Strategies Enacted by a Prospective Cohort of Midlife and Older Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States: A Latent Class Analysis.

Insights into combination HIV prevention (CHP) strategies to reduce HIV incidence among midlife and older adult men who have sex with men (MSM) are limited. The current study is a secondary data analysis evaluating CHP in a sample of sexually active midlife and older adult MSM (N = 566) from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study Healthy Aging Substudy. Stratified by HIV serostatus, we used latent class analyses to identify CHP classes based on self-reported sociobehavioral and biobehavioral prevention strategies that participants and their male partners used in the prior 6 months. We identified th

Lost2PrEP: Understanding Reasons for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Sexual Health Care Disengagement Among Men Who Have Sex with Men Attending a Sexual Health Clinic at a Large Urban Academic Medical Center in New York City.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents HIV, but low rates of retention in care limit its effectiveness. We conducted a prospective survey-based study to investigate reasons for PrEP disengagement among men who have sex with men attending a sexual health clinic at a large urban academic medical center in New York City who were lost to follow up; surveys asked about current PrEP status, reasons for disengagement, attitudes toward PrEP, substance use, sexual practices, and behavioral/social determinants of health. Outreach attempts were made to 634 patients; majority of eligible participants we

Characterization of HIV-1 molecular epidemiology and transmitted drug-resistance in newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients in Sichuan, China.

BACKGROUND: Sichuan province is one of the highest AIDS epidemic provinces in China, with a large number of floating population. The annual number of cases of HIV/AIDS reported in Sichuan has been the highest province in China for several successive years. There is a lack of widespread and representative data on the distribution of HIV genotypes in Sichuan. We aim to investigate the characteristics of HIV-1 molecular epidemiology and transmitted drug-resistance in newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients in Sichuan, China. METHOD: Archived plasma samples (n = 1524) from HIV-1 newly-diagnosed ind

Perceptions of hepatitis C treatment and reinfection risk among HIV-positive men who have sex with men and engage in high risk behaviours for hepatitis C transmission: The CEASE qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, treatment uptake for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among HIV-HCV coinfected men who have sex with men (MSM) has substantially increased since the advent of interferon-free direct-acting antivirals (DAA). However, HIV-positive MSM who engage in high risk behaviours are at an increased risk of HCV reinfection post-treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate perceptions of HCV diagnosis, treatment and reinfection risk among HCV-HIV coinfected MSM who engage in drug use and/or high risk sexual behavior in Sydney, Australia. METHODS: Participants were recruited fr

Alcohol and drug use during sex and its association with sexually transmitted infections: a retrospective cohort study among young people aged under 25 years visiting Dutch STI clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use and drug use are common behaviours among young people. STI positivity is higher in young people than in people aged above 25 years. While there is an increasing amount of knowledge about drug use during sex among men who have sex with men (MSM), data on this behaviour among young women and heterosexual men are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to assess the proportion and characteristics of women and heterosexual men aged under 25 years reporting alcohol and/or drug use during sex and its association with STI positivity. METHODS: Surveillance data of heterosexual in

The Impact of Mouthwash on the Oropharyngeal Microbiota of Men Who Have Sex with Men: a Substudy of the OMEGA Trial.

Mouthwash is a commonly used product and has been proposed as an alternative intervention to prevent gonorrhea transmission. However, the long-term effects of mouthwash on the oral microbiota are largely unknown. We investigated the impact of 12 weeks of daily mouthwash use on the oropharyngeal microbiota in a subset of men who have sex with men who participated in a randomized trial comparing the efficacy of two alcohol-free mouthwashes for the prevention of gonorrhea. We characterized the oropharyngeal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene sequencing of tonsillar fossae samples collected before and

Chemsex and antiretroviral prescribing in an HIV cohort in Brighton, UK.

OBJECTIVES: Chemsex has been reported among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. There have been concerns about potentially harmful drug-drug interactions between chemsex drugs and antiretroviral therapy (ritonavir and cobicistat). We aimed to describe the prevalence and patterns of chemsex users in our HIV clinic population and to evaluate antiretroviral prescribing among chemsex users. METHODS: We undertook a cross-sectional study of patients attending our HIV clinic between January 2019 and December 2020. We collected data on patients who disclosed recent recreational drug use

Patterns and risk of HIV-1 transmission network among men who have sex with men in Guangxi, China.

The prevalence of HIV-1 in Guangxi is very high, and the rate of HIV-1 infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) has been increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the patterns and risk factors of HIV transmission in Guangxi. For this purpose, individuals diagnosed with HIV-1 during 2013-2018 in Guangxi were recruited. Phylogenetic relationship, transmission clusters, and genotypic drug resistance analyses were performed based on HIV-1 pol sequences. Related factors were analysed to assess for their association with HIV-1 transmission. CRF07_BC (50.4%) and CRF01_AE (33.4%) were f

Canadian undergraduate men's visual attention to cisgender women, cisgender men, and feminine trans individuals.

Some heterosexual men express sexual interest in feminine trans individuals with penises. It is possible that this interest arises from a tendency for heterosexual men to be sexually responsive to gender in addition to sex. We compared the self-reported sexual attraction and visual attention patterns of Canadian undergraduate heterosexual men (N = 51) and gay men (N = 20) to nude images of feminine trans individuals with penises, cisgender men, and cisgender women. Heterosexual men were most attracted to cisgender women and fixated on them the longest. However, they were more attracted to femi

Ambulatory anal self-sampling in MSM living with HIV, an acceptable and reliable screening method.

OBJECTIVES: Anal cancer, usually driven by an oncogenic Human Papillomavirus, remains a leading cause of morbidity in men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, despite combined antiretroviral therapy. Various recommendations advocate to perform regular examination and proctologist-performed samples to anticipate this risk and treat locally before cancer occurrence, an efficient strategy which has the drawback of requiring the proctologist's availability. This study evaluates the acceptability, feasibility, and efficiency of self-performed samples to screen for HPV-infection and HPV-rela

PrEP Use and PrEP Use Disclosure are Associated with Condom Use During Sex: A Multilevel Analysis of Latino MSM Egocentric Sexual Networks.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is integral to HIV prevention; however, the influence of PrEP use and PrEP use disclosure on condom use is unclear among Latinx men who have sex with men (LMSM). This study explored associations of LMSM PrEP use and use disclosure on consistent dyadic condom use in the past 6 months. Participants were 130 HIV-negative PrEP and non-PrEP using LMSM ages 20-39 years. Two-level logistic regression models assessing individual- and dyadic-level predictors on condom use were fitted using R. Participants reported a mean of four sexual partners (n = 507 dyads). Substantial Decline in Use of HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Following Introduction of COVID-19 Physical Distancing Restrictions in Australia: Results From a Prospective Observational Study of Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: In response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Australia introduced public health and physical distancing restrictions in late March 2020. We investigated the impact of these restrictions on HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM). METHODS: Participants in an ongoing online cohort study previously reported PrEP use from 2014 to 2019. In April 2020, 847 HIV-negative and untested participants completed questionnaires assessing changes in PrEP use as a result of COVID-19 public health measures. Binary logistic multiple reg

Chemsex and diagnoses of syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia among men who have sex with men in the UK: a multivariable prediction model using causal inference methodology.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade diagnoses of most STIs have risen among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although a significant proportion of this is likely due to increased STI screening, understanding the role of behavioural drivers remains critical. We measure the associations between stimulant use to enhance and prolong sexual experiences (chemsex) and bacterial STI diagnoses in UK MSM, individually considering HIV-diagnosed MSM, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users and other MSM. METHODS: We used the UK 2017-2018 European MSM Internet Survey data (n=9375). We constructed causal inferen

Cross-sectional assessment of determinants of STIs among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Kigali, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: STIs among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) continue to increase. In Rwanda, STI management relies on syndromic management with limited empirical data characterising the burden of specific STIs among MSM/TGW. This study evaluated the prevalence of syphilis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and associated factors among MSM/TGW in Kigali. METHODS: From March to August 2018, 737 MSM/TGW >18 years were enrolled using respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Structured interviews and HIV/STI screening were conducted. Syphilis was screened wi
