One-year changes in clinical and balance parameters in individuals of different subtypes of migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine has been associated with balance dysfunction, more pronounced in patients with aura and chronic migraine. Also, it has been suggested that balance deficits are progressive through the migraineurs lifetime. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the one-year progression of balance parameters and clinical parameters associated with balance in female patients with and without migraine. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: The participants were distributed in four groups: control (CG; n = 27) migraine with aura (MA; n = 25), migraine without aura (MwA; n = 26), and chronic migraine (C

A Combined Effect of Polygenic Scores and Environmental Factors on Individual Differences in Depression Level.

The risk of depression could be evaluated through its multifactorial nature using the polygenic score (PGS) approach. Assuming a "clinical continuum" hypothesis of mental diseases, a preliminary assessment of individuals with elevated risk for developing depression in a non-clinical group is of high relevance. In turn, epidemiological studies suggest including social/lifestyle factors together with PGS to address the "missing heritability" problem. We designed regression models, which included PGS using 27 SNPs and social/lifestyle factors to explain individual differences in depression levels

Factors Influencing the Hepcidin Response to Exercise: An Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin, the master iron regulatory hormone, has been shown to peak 3-6 h postexercise, and is likely a major contributor to the prevalence of iron deficiency in athletes. Although multiple studies have investigated the hepcidin response to exercise, small sample sizes preclude the generalizability of current research findings. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this individual participant data meta-analysis was to identify key factors influencing the hepcidin-exercise response. METHODS: Following a systematic review of the literature, a one-stage meta-analysis with mixed-effects linear regr

Disrupted Excitation-Inhibition Balance in Cognitively Normal Individuals at Risk of Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences impact Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, but cell-to-network level dysfunctions in the prodromal phase are unclear. Alterations in hippocampal excitation-inhibition balance (EIB) have recently been linked to early AD pathology. OBJECTIVE: Examine how AD risk factors (age, APOEɛ4, amyloid-β) relate to hippocampal EIB in cognitively normal males and females using connectome-level measures. METHODS: Individuals from the OASIS-3 cohort (age 42-95) were studied (N = 437), with a subset aged 65+ undergoing neuropsychological testing (N = 231). RESULTS: In absenc

Transvaginal sonography and surgical findings in the diagnosis of endometriosis individuals: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a challenging gynecological disease and a debilitating condition that profoundly affects the individual's quality of life. Besides pathological confirmation, diagnostic laparoscopy has been internationally accepted as the standard method to identify the accurate mapping of endometriosis. Transvaginal sonography (TVS) is the first non-invasive imaging modality to estimate the severity of endometriosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of TVS in affected women compared with surgical findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-secti

Gait speed and individual characteristics are related to specific gait metrics in neurotypical adults.

Gait biofeedback is a well-studied strategy to reduce gait impairments such as propulsion deficits or asymmetric step lengths. With biofeedback, participants alter their walking to reach the desired magnitude of a specific parameter (the biofeedback target) with each step. Biofeedback of anterior ground reaction force and step length is commonly used in post-stroke gait training as these variables are associated with self-selected gait speed, fall risk, and the energy cost of walking. However, biofeedback targets are often set as a function of an individual's baseline walking pattern, which ma

Spatio-temporal clustering of lumbar intervertebral flexion interactions in 127 asymptomatic individuals.

The purpose of this study was to categorize asymptomatic participants based on the clustering of spatial and temporal intervertebral kinematic variables during lumbar flexion. Lumbar segmental interactions (L2-S1) were evaluated in 127 asymptomatic participants during flexion using fluoroscopy. First, four variables were identified consisting of: 1. Range of motion (ROMC), 2. Peaking time of the first derivative for separate segmentation (PTFDs), 3. Peaking magnitude of the first derivative (PMFD), and 4. Peaking time of the first derivative for stepwise (grouped) segmentation (PTFDss). These

Cognitive control enhancement in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and neurotypical individuals.

Cognitive control, which has been localized to the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) based on functional imaging and brain lesion studies, is impaired in patients with ADHD. The present study aims to investigate whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the rIFG might improve cognitive control in ADHD subjects. We hypothesized poorer performance in a cognitive control task, but not in a control language task, in the ADHD subjects. Crucially, following tDCS, we expected the ADHD group to improve their cognitive control. In a double-blind randomized control trial, 42 particip

The Emotion Regulation Mechanism in Neurotic Individuals: The Potential Role of Mindfulness and Cognitive Bias.

Neuroticism is a personality trait that impacts daily life and raises the risk of mental problems and physical illnesses. To understand the emotion regulation mechanism of neurotic individuals, we developed two complementary studies to examine the effects of mindfulness and negative cognitive bias. In Study 1, four scales (EPQ-RSC, FFMQ, CERQ, NCPBQ) were used for assessment. Correlation analysis and structural comparison showed that: (1) the level of neuroticism was positively correlated with negative emotion regulation; (2) negative cognitive bias mediated the relationship between neuroticis

Biomechanical responses of individuals with transtibial amputation stepping on a coronally uneven and unpredictable surface.

Coronally uneven surfaces are prevalent in natural and man-made terrain, such as holes or bumps in the ground, curbs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces can be challenging to navigate, especially for individuals with lower limb amputations. This study examined the biomechanical response of individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation (TTA) taking a step on a coronally uneven surface while wearing their clinically prescribed prosthesis, compared to individuals without mobility impairments (controls). An instrumented walkway was used with the middle force plate positioned either flus

Combined group and individual therapy for patients with avoidant personality disorder-A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a common disorder within mental health services, associated with significant psychosocial impairment. The disorder has been neglected in research. There are currently no evidence-based treatments for AvPD, and there is a need for treatment studies focusing particularly on this form of personality pathology. The present study was a pilot study of combined group and individual therapy for patients with AvPD, based on mentalization-based and metacognitive interpersonal therapy. The aim was to investigate the feasibility of the treatment program a

Attempted symmetry affects dynamic gait stability in individuals with lower-limb amputation.

BACKGROUND: Gait in people with lower limb amputation (LLA) is typically asymmetrical. Reducing this asymmetry is often attempted to minimise the impact of secondary health issues. However, temporal-spatial asymmetry in gait of people with LLA has also been shown to underpin dynamic stability. RESEARCH QUESTION: The current study aimed to identify the effects of acute attempts to achieve temporal-spatial symmetry on the dynamic stability of people with unilateral transtibial amputation (UTA). The secondary aim of this study was to identify the corresponding biomechanical adaptations during at

Cardiomyopathy prevalence exceeds 30% in individuals with TTN variants and early atrial fibrillation.

PURPOSE: TTN truncating variants (TTNtvs) represent the largest known genetic cause of dilated cardiomyopathies (DCMs), however their penetrance for DCM in general populations is low. More broadly, patients with cardiomyopathies (CMs) often exhibit other cardiac conditions, such as atrial fibrillation (Afib), which has also been linked to TTNtvs. This retrospective analysis aims to characterize the relationship between different cardiac conditions in those with TTNtvs and identify individuals with the highest risk of DCM. METHODS: In this work we leverage longitudinal electronic health record

Can family members reliably assess mood and suicidal ideation in individuals with epilepsy?

BACKGROUND: Routine detection of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation in people with epilepsy (PWE) remains suboptimal. We investigated the level of agreement between PWE and their proxies when evaluating these psychiatric symptoms. METHODS: From October 2021 to March 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional anonymous survey at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos (Vilnius, Lithuania). Persons accompanying PWE completed different scales measuring symptoms of depression and anxiety and evaluated suicidal ideation among PWE (defined as a non-zero score of the suicide item of the Beck
