The influence of child sexual abuse on the self from adult narrative perspectives.

The impact of child sexual abuse on the adult self is not yet clearly understood. We explored adult perspectives through the use of narrative interviews (N = 30). Three key themes or views of self were identified in all narratives to varying degrees: the worthless self, the self as unknown, and the potential/developing self. Ambivalence and tension were present in all narratives. Individuals were challenged to integrate the sexual abuse experience in a constructive way and develop a more coherent perception of the self. The narrative method highlighted the dynamic nature of peoples' experience

Prevalence and correlates of victimization and weapon carrying among military- and nonmilitary-connected youth in Southern California.

OBJECTIVES: The present analysis sought to explore the normative rates and correlates of school victimization and weapon carrying among military-connected and nonmilitary-connected youth in public schools in Southern California. METHODS: Data are from a sub-sample of the 2011 California Healthy Kids Survey (N=14,512). Items to assess victimization and weapon carrying were separated into three categories: physical acts (e.g., being pushed or shoved), nonphysical acts (e.g., having rumors spread about them) and weapon carrying. RESULTS: The bivariate results indicate that youth with a military

[A model of the effects of child sexual abuse on post-traumatic stress: the mediating role of attributions of blame and avoidance coping].

Employing structural equation modeling, the direct and indirect effects of the severity of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA), attributions of blame for the abuse, and coping strategies on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptomatology are analyzed. The effects of other types of child maltreatment on PTSD were also controlled. The sample comprised 163 female college students who were victims of CSA. The results suggested that victims of more severe abuse showed higher levels of avoidant coping, self blame, and family blame. Having suffered other kinds of abuse or neglect was also related to higher

Drug use, interpersonal attraction, and communication: situational factors as predictors of episodes of unprotected anal intercourse among Latino gay men.

It is important to understand situational factors linked to episodes of unprotected sexual intercourse among Latino gay men (LGM), who are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in the U.S. Past research has suggested that participation in difficult sexual situations mediates the relationship between socio-cultural factors and sexual risk behaviors among LGM. This study examined drug use by self and sex partners, interpersonal factors, and other key variables, each examined at the situation-level of analysis, as predictors of episodes of unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among LGM. Study par

Changes in women's sexual risk behaviors after therapeutic community treatment.

This study examines sexual risk behaviors among 197 women mandated to substance abuse treatment in therapeutic communities. The women's risk behaviors after treatment are compared with their behaviors prior to treatment, and risk behaviors among those who completed treatment are compared with those who did not. The women had a high prevalence of sexual risk behaviors (i.e., multiple partners, unprotected sex, sex trade, not asking partners to use condoms, sex with injection drug users [IDUs]) and relationship violence and conflict before treatment and a significant decrease in unprotected sex,

A three year follow-up of attachment and indiscriminate friendliness in children adopted from Romanian orphanages.

Attachment and indiscriminately friendly behavior were assessed in children who had spent at least 8 months in a Romanian orphanage (RO) and two comparison groups of children: a Canadian-born, nonadopted, never institutionalized comparison group (CB) and an early adopted comparison group adopted from Romania before the age of 4 months (EA). Attachment was assessed using 2 measures: an attachment security questionnaire based on parent report, and a Separation Reunion procedure that was coded using the Preschool Assessment of Attachment. Indiscriminately friendly behavior was examined using pare

Admitting powerlessness empowers recovery from substance use disorder: a conceptual model.

Some individuals use substances to cope with their post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. The emotional, behavioral, and spiritual experience of both their post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder is manifested in a sense of powerlessness, which is caused by the inability to stop using despite negative consequences related to continued use. Thus, powerlessness is a prominent factor in recovery from substance use disorder. The aims of the present theoretical article were to (a) present the consequences of the co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder

Between Visible Marks and Invisible Pain: A Qualitative Study of Multi-Layered Stigma Among Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in China.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disproportionately affects women and often disrupts work, intimate relationships, and reproductive life. Although stigma is increasingly recognized in chronic illness, less is known about how it is experienced among women with SLE in China. Using an interpretive phenomenological design informed by health stigma theory, this qualitative study examined how stigma was produced, experienced, and managed in the everyday lives of 20 Chinese women living with SLE. Data were generated through semi-structured online interviews, chosen because of participants' geograph

Social cognition abilities in people with HIV: the role of stigma and other factors.

Social cognition refers to the ability to perceive social stimuli, interpret their meaning, and respond appropriately to navigate dynamic social environments, including various professional and personal relationships to secure interpersonal and external resources for effective social functioning. More basic, social cognition is the complicated ability to interact with others. Known to impact everyday functioning and quality of life, deficits in this essential ability have been well documented in schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, depression, and other mental health conditions. DSM-5-TR Criteria and Domains for Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Evidence From Network Analysis Based on the Mental Health Professionals' Perspective.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a complex disorder that, given the variety of its manifestations and the significant challenges related to its treatment, has attracted considerable attention from international scientific research. The present research aimed to investigate the centrality and the dynamics among the symptoms of NPD, based on the mental health professionals' perceptions. The research involved 376 mental health professionals, which evaluated the relative importance of diagnostic criteria for NPD outlined in Section II of the DSM-5-TR and the significance of maladaptive p

Decreased oxytocin levels related to social cognition impairment in borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctions in the oxytocin system have been reported in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Deficits could be related to interpersonal hypersensitivity, which has been previously associated with failures in social cognition (SC) in this disorder, especially in Theory of Mind (ToM) skills. The aim of this work is to study the links between the oxytocin system and SC impairments in patients with BPD. METHOD: Plasma oxytocin levels (OXT) and protein expression of oxytocin receptors in blood mononuclear cells (OXTR) were examined in 33 patients with a diagnosis of

[Organizing Relationships to Help Homeless People: a Question of Front Line Relational Work].

Objectives In a context where the rather informal ties between front-line practitioners can be conceived as a weakness to be formalized or a force to rely on, this paper explores and documents their conceptions on how they create, maintain and abandon their ties while helping homeless people. Methods Its empirical material is drawn from an interpretative case study on the liaison role of the Homeless Team (Équipe Itinérance). This case is based on semi-directed interviews with 35 practitioners (24 front line practitioners and 11 managers) from 13 Montreal organizations in the homeless sector. A
