Ten patients with an established histologic diagnosis of lichen planus on various sites of the oral cavity were treated with CO 2 laser therapy under local anesthesia. Power output of 5 W at continuous mode was applied to vaporize the lesions. Eradication was achieved by aiming the laser in a moving criss-cross pattern with defocused spatial overlap. Depth of removal was subepithelial. No suturing of the wound was done. Follow-up occurred at intervals from 6 months to 4 years. The average length was about 3 years. Acquired pulmonary valve atresia is a well-recognized but uncommon complication of surgical systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts in patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Acquired atresia of the tricuspid valve, however, has not been reported previously. This complication developed in a 3-year-old girl, with pulmonary atresia and an intact ventricular septum, after a Blalock-Taussig shunt and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction. Percutaneous transcatheter laser-assisted balloon dilation re-established antegrade flow across the tricuspid valve.

A new modality--strong impulse laser radiation--has been tried in the treatment of 99 patients suffering from atonic gastric ulcer. It was found to promote cicatrization in 87% of cases. The effect may be due to correction of immunity and local microcirculation, affection of causative agents. Strong impulse laser radiation appears to be superior to ++trans-endoscopic treatments in safety and availability.

He-Ne laser stimulation was used in multiple-modality treatment of 512 patients with various corneal conditions: 217 with perforating wounds, 75 with chemical and thermal burns, 48 with ulcers of various origins, and 162 with endothelial-epithelial dystrophy resulting from cataract extraction with implantation of the intraocular lens. We present a patient with isolated angiomatosis retinae, in whom ruthenium irradiation was administered for treatment of a secondary serous retinal detachment. Prior to therapy, we measured an increased vessel diameter. Following treatment, decreasing venous vessel diameter was documented three-dimensionally utilizing laser scanning tomography. We describe our experience of ten cases of posterior segment vitreolysis, using the short-pulse neodymium YAG (Yttrium Aluminium Garnate) laser. A group of 74 men who underwent carbon dioxide laser treatment of meatal condylomata were observed for an average of 18 months. The cure rate after 1 treatment of isolated meatal lesions was 78%; the presence of external lesions lowered the rate to 32% and additional external and urethral warts to 25%. Following multiple treatments all but 6 patients were cured; 83% of the recurrences developed within 3 months. One urethral and 6 meatal strictures occurred more than 3 months after treatment; 9 patients had a spraying stream many years after treatment and 2 complained of frequency.

Transscleral photocoagulation of the ciliary body was achieved in pigmented rabbits using a sapphire probe delivery system coupled to a commercial surgical continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser.
