This case report describes the clinical course in a great age home hospice patient with advanced lip cancer, who was cured as a result of palliative care and radiotherapy specialists' cooperation. A 91-year-old Caucasian male developed a lip tumor over five years. Given his passive approach to health and challenging living conditions, he opted not to undergo the recommended surgical treatment. Evaluation of Maxillary Sinus Pathologies in Children and Adolescents with Cleft Lip and Palate Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography: A Retrospective Study.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to evaluate maxillary sinus (MS) pathologies in children and adolescents with cleft lip and palate (CLP) in comparison to a sex- and age-matched control group using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), retrospectively.MethodCBCT images obtained between the years 2014 and 2022 from a total of 130 patients aged between 7 and 18 were considered eligible for this study. Age, sex, and the type of MS pathologies in each sinus were recorded in CLP (n = 65) and control (n = 65) groups. The MS pathologies were categorized and recorded for both right and left sinu…

A novel, high-performance, low-volume, rapid luciferase immunoprecipitation system (LIPS) assay to detect autoantibodies to zinc transporter 8.

BACKGROUND: Zinc transporter 8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A) are thought to appear close to type 1 diabetes (T1D) onset and can identify high-risk multiple (≥2) autoantibody positive individuals. Radiobinding assays (RBA) are widely used for ZnT8A measurement but have limited sustainability. We sought to develop a novel, high-performance, non-radioactive luciferase immunoprecipitation system (LIPS) assay to replace RBA. METHODS: A custom dual C-terminal ZnT8 (aa268-369; R325/W325) heterodimeric antigen, tagged with a NanoluciferaseTM (Nluc-ZnT8) reporter, and LIPS assay was developed. Assay performa…

Classification and Treatment of Complications Related to Titanium and Biodegradable Miniplates Using the Lip-Split Transmandibular Approach for Oral and Oropharyngeal Oncological Surgery.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of classified definitions and corresponding treatment principles for complications related to titanium miniplate (TMP) and biodegradable miniplate (BMP). AIMS: This study proposes a classification system for complications related to TMP and BMP osteosynthesis and evaluates the effectiveness of the classification system in the treatment of the complications. METHODS: One hundred forty-two patients with advanced-stage oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) underwent oncological surgery via lip-split transmandibular (LTM) approach including midline,…

12-Year Trends of Orofacial Clefts in the United States: Highlighting Racial/Ethnic Differences in Prevalence of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate.

ObjectiveDiscrepancies in prevalence among infants with orofacial clefts are public health research priorities. Our objective was to calculate updated estimated prevalence of orofacial clefts in the United States, with sub-analyses by racial/ethnic group.DesignThe National Birth Defect Prevention Network database was used to evaluate trends in cases with orofacial cleft in the United States from 2006 to 2018. Cases with cleft lip with and without cleft palate (CL ± P) and cleft palate (CP) alone were sub-stratified by racial/ethnic category. Estimated prevalence was calculated using the total …

A Qualitative Study on the Feeding Methods of Filipino Mothers of Children with Cleft Lip and Palate Aged 0 to 24 Months: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the early problems that children born with cleft lip and palate encounter is difficulty in feeding. This affects the child's nutritional needs and the timing of the surgical intervention. Information on the appropriate feeding methods for children with cleft lip and palate will enable mothers to feed their babies properly and facilitate the implementation of appropriate interventions. OBJECTIVES: The study described the feeding problems experienced by children with cleft lip and palate (CLP), and cleft palate (CP) ages 0-24 months, the feeding methods most preferred by Fili…

INTRODUCTION: The early diagnosis of mandibular asymmetry (MA) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) can contribute to its treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and the extent of MA in UCLP patients at different growth stages. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of 47 UCLP patients were included, and divided into two groups (prepubertal stage and pubertal stage). The mandibular ramus height (Co-Go), mandibular body length (Go-Me), total mandibular length (Co-Me), gonial angle (CoGoMe), the volume of the mandibular condyles, and…

The Risk of Orofacial Cleft Lip/Palate Due to Maternal Ambient Air Pollution Exposure: A Call for Further Research in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite being underreported, orofacial cleft lip/palate (CLP) remains in the top five of South Africa's most common congenital disorders. Maternal air pollution exposure has been associated with CLP in neonates. South Africa has high air pollution levels due to domestic burning practices, coal-fired power plants, mining, industry, and traffic pollution, among other sources. We investigated air pollutant levels in geographic locations of CLP cases. METHODS: In a retrospective case series study (2006-2020) from a combined dataset by a Gauteng surgeon and South African Operation Smil…

Assessing the Impact of Transcutaneous Maxillary Distraction Osteogenesis on Pharyngeal Airway Volume in Children with Cleft Lip and Palate: A 3D Evaluation Study.

Cleft lip and cleft palate (CLCP) patients often have a retrusive maxilla and a severe skeletal Class III malocclusion, which can result in velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the volume of the 3D airway in CLCP children after maxilla distraction using the transcutaneous maxillary distraction osteogenesis (TMDO) method. 15 children with bilateral or unilateral CLCP were included in the study. 3D CBCT images were taken before and after distraction and were segmented and reconstructed to create a 3D airway model. The airway was divided into th…

How differences in anatomy and physiology and other aetiology affect the way we label and describe speech in individuals with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Speech in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is a complex myriad of presenting symptoms. It is uniquely associated with the structural difference of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), together with a wide and heterogeneous range of other aetiologies which often co-occur. The nature of the speech sound disorder (SSD) including VPI may also change over the course of an individual's care pathway. Differences in terminology and approaches to analysis are currently used, resulting in confusion internationally. Additionally, current diagnostic labels and classification syste…
