The risk of cardiovascular disease in women after miscarriage, stillbirth, and therapeutic abortion: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, responsible for approximately a third of all female deaths. Pregnancy complications are known to be associated with a greater risk of incident CVD in mothers. However, the relationships between pregnancy loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or therapeutic abortion, and future maternal cardiovascular health are under-researched. This study seeks to provide an up-to-date systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between these three forms of pregnancy loss and the subsequent development of CVD. METHODS

Outcomes of endotracheal suctioning in non-vigorous neonates born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to systematically review and analyse the outcomes of non-endotracheal suctioning (non-ETS) versus ETS in non-vigorous meconium-stained neonates. DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of non-ETS and ETS in non-vigorous infants born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF). We searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Clinical Trials.gov, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to November 2019, using keywords and related terms. Only non-vigorous infants born through MSAF included in randomised controlled trials, were incl

Multidisciplinary Prerounding Meeting as a Continuous Quality Improvement Tool: Leveraging to Reduce Continuous Benzodiazepine Use at an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based medicine often has many barriers to overcome prior to implementation in practice, hence the importance of continuous quality improvement. We report on a brief (≤10 minutes) multidisciplinary meeting prior to rounds to establish a dashboard for continuous quality improvement and studied the success of this meeting on a particular area of focus: continuous infusion benzodiazepine minimization. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of patients admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) of a large academic medical center over a 4-month period. A mo

Improving collaboration between professionals supporting mentally ill offenders.

Purpose Interprofessional collaboration is necessary when supporting mentally ill offenders but little is understood of these interactions. The purpose of this paper is to explore prison officers' perceptions of current and desirable levels of interprofessional collaboration (relational coordination (RC)) to understand how collaboration between these systems can be improved. Design/methodology/approach Gittell's RC scale was administered to prison officers within the Norwegian prison system ( n=160) using an adaptation of the instrument in which actual and desired levels of RC are evaluated. Opportunities and challenges in screening for childhood sexual abuse.

Retrospective studies suggest 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience sexual abuse before 18 years of age, resulting in future morbidity. Successful interventions exist, however, victims are reluctant to disclose. Screening for childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may provide an opportunity to overcome this barrier, yet no current model for universal CSA screening exists. We sought to understand the perspective of key stakeholders on CSA screening through qualitative research. Eight focus groups of 7-10 participants each (n=62) were conducted from April-September 2016. Stakeholders included schoo

Maternal protein restriction during lactation induces early and lasting plasma metabolomic and hepatic lipidomic signatures of the offspring in a rodent programming model.

Perinatal undernutrition affects not only fetal and neonatal growth but also adult health outcome, as suggested by the metabolic imprinting concept. However, the exact mechanisms underlying offspring metabolic adaptations are not yet fully understood. Specifically, it remains unclear whether the gestation or the lactation is the more vulnerable period to modify offspring metabolic flexibility. We investigated in a rodent model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) induced by maternal protein restriction (R) during gestation which time window of maternal undernutrition (gestation, lactation

Current barriers and potential strategies to increase the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies in Australia: An expert roundtable discussion.

BACKGROUND: Australia's abortion rates are among the highest in the developed world. Efficacy of the most commonly used form of contraception (oral contraceptives and condoms) relies on regular user compliance. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) virtually eradicates contraceptive failure as it is not user-dependent; however, its uptake has been low. AIM: To provide an overview of barriers to LARC use in Australia and potential strategies to overcome these barriers. METHOD: A roundtable of Australian experts was convened to share clinical perspectives and to explore the barriers and

The lived experience of individuals in cardiac rehabilitation who have a positive outlook on their cardiac recovery: A phenomenological inquiry.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation is often under-utilized despite its well-known benefits. Individuals with cardiac disease who exhibit a positive outlook often experience improved health outcomes. This study tried to explore the question: "What are the lived experiences of cardiac recovery in cardiac rehabilitation individuals with a predominantly positive outlook in the context of an acute cardiac event?" AIMS: Our primary aim explored the experiences of cardiac recovery in cardiac rehabilitation participants with a predominantly positive outlook, within the context of an acute cardiac eve

Healthful Dietary Patterns and the Risk of Hypertension Among Women With a History of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Women who developed gestational diabetes mellitus represent a high-risk population for hypertension later in life. The role of diet in the progression of hypertension among this susceptible population is unknown. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 3818 women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus in the Nurses' Health Study II as part of the ongoing Diabetes & Women's Health Study. These women were followed-up from 1989 to 2011. Incident hypertension was identified through self-administered questionnaires that were validated previously by medical record review. Adherence score

Hypertension, use of antihypertensive medications, and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer.

Few studies have examined the associations of hypertension and antihypertensive medications with ovarian cancer. In particular, beta-blockers, one of the most commonly prescribed medications to treat hypertension, may reduce ovarian cancer risk by inhibiting beta-adrenergic signaling. We prospectively followed 90,384 women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) between 1988-2012 and 113,121 NHSII participants between 1989-2011. Hypertension and use of antihypertensive medications were self-reported biennially. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confide

Periodontal disease, tooth loss and colorectal cancer risk: Results from the Nurses' Health Study.

Periodontal diseases including tooth loss might increase systemic inflammation, lead to immune dysregulation and alter gut microbiota, thereby possibly influencing colorectal carcinogenesis. Few epidemiological studies have examined the association between periodontal diseases and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. We collected information on the periodontal disease (defined as history of periodontal bone loss) and number of natural teeth in the Nurses' Health Study. A total of 77,443 women were followed since 1992. We used Cox proportional hazard models to calculate multivariable hazard ratios (HR

Early Predictors of Childhood Restrictive Eating: A Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood eating problems, in particular restrictive eating, are common. Knowledge and understanding of risk mechanisms is still scarce. We aimed to investigate prospective early risk factors for restrictive eating across child, maternal, obstetric, and sociodemographic domains in a population-based sample of Danish 5 to 7 year olds. METHOD: Data on restrictive eating patterns (picky eating, slow/poor eating, and emotional undereating) collected on 1327 children from the Copenhagen Child Cohort 2000 were linked with registered and routinely collected health nurse data (during the f
