Process & Outcome Evaluation of a Rural Health Network to Assess Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Rural residents face many health disparities and challenges. Rural health networks form to address the specific needs of a community by bringing together multiple individuals and organisations; however, there is limited literature on the evaluation of these networks. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a network's effectiveness in three areas: (1) capacity to achieve change in palliative care education, (2) key results of collaborative efforts, and (3) extent to which grant activities were implemented. METHODS: Grant required evaluation measures were used to answer area one and three: key sec

Industry Perspective on Nonclinical Approaches for Hepatotoxicity Risk Assessment: Insights from Two Longitudinal Surveys Conducted in 2023 and 2017.

The Nonclinical Translation Working Group of the IQ Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI) Consortium conducted two surveys in 2023 and 2017 to canvas member companies on approaches and experiences in the preceding 5-year periods that inform how DILI risk assessment has evolved in the past decade. Surveys comprised 53 detailed questions to understand the current status, temporal changes, and future direction and to gain insights. Focusing on the 2023 survey for the most contemporary data, responses indicated that DILI still remains a problem during drug development, with 41% of companies in the 2023

The Three Pillars of Atrial Fibrillation Management.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent sustained arrhythmia, and given its associations with stroke, heart failure and dementia, AF confers a major impact on public health. Optimal AF management should be based on three pillars: assessment and treatment of stroke risk factors, treatment of comorbidities, and symptom management through rhythm/rate control. In untreated AF, depending on other risk factors, the risk of stroke increases almost fivefold, and one in five strokes is related to AF. Therefore, effective assessment and prevention of stroke are the first pillar of AF management.

The impact of nausea and vomiting on health related quality of life during pregnancy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting (NV) is the most common health condition experienced by up to 80% of pregnant women. Although nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP) is a natural condition and self-limiting, it has many negative impacts on the women's overall health particularly quality of life (QoL). However, there is no summarized evidence that provides comprehensive information about the impact of NVP on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to summarize the available empirical evidence on the impact of NV on QoL during pregnancy. METHODS: F

Psychosis in the Deaf Population: Prevalence, Phenomenology, and Diagnostic Challenges: A Narrative Review.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals face unique challenges in psychiatric assessment, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of psychotic disorders. Communication barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and clinician unfamiliarity with deaf language and norms may contribute to misdiagnosis, diagnostic uncertainty, and inadequate care. This narrative review synthesizes current literature on the prevalence, phenomenology, and diagnostic challenges of psychotic disorders in the deaf population, aiming to identify trends, gaps, and future research needs. A comprehensive search was conduc

Sustainability of Rideshare Programs to Promote Engagement of Underrepresented Populations in Breast Cancer Screening Trials.

BACKGROUND: Transportation barriers significantly limit participation in breast cancer screening trials among Hispanic women, exacerbating disparities in breast cancer outcomes and underrepresentation in clinical research. Rideshare programs have emerged as a potential solution, but their long-term sustainability remains underexplored. Understanding sustainability capacity is critical to ensuring these programs can address structural barriers, promote health equity, and improve outcomes for underserved populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability capacity of a no-cost rides

Osteonecrosis of the external auditory canal in two patients on denosumab therapy.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare but well-recognized complication of treatment with antiresorptive agents. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the external auditory canal (MROEAC), on the other hand, is even rarer and mostly reported during bisphosphonate exposure. Its pathophysiology is thought to involve complex multifactorial processes, including inhibition of bone remodeling, altered angiogenesis, infection, and inflammation. Due to the poor recognition of MROEAC, ear canal health is not routinely discussed with patients, and there is no requirement for auditor

Environmental enrichment reverses cognitive impairments and hippocampus tissue loss without altering the redox state in rats exposed to severe chronic hyperhomocysteinemia.

INTRODUCTION: Classical homocystinuria is a genetic disease caused by partial or total deficiency of cystathionine-β synthase (CβS) enzyme activity, ultimately leading to brain alterations and early atherosclerotic disease. Currently, there is no cure for the disease and the treatments consist in reducing homocysteine levels through diet, however not all patients respond to therapy. Due to its ability to increase neurotrophins production and decrease oxidative stress in the brain, environmental enrichment (EE) has been used with success as an adjuvant non-pharmacological therapy for CNS disord

A case study of the informative value of risk of bias and reporting quality assessments for systematic reviews.

While undisputedly important, and part of any systematic review (SR) by definition, evaluation of the risk of bias within the included studies is one of the most time-consuming parts of performing an SR. In this paper, we describe a case study comprising an extensive analysis of risk of bias (RoB) and reporting quality (RQ) assessment from a previously published review (CRD42021236047). It included both animal and human studies, and the included studies compared baseline diseased subjects with controls, assessed the effects of investigational treatments, or both. We compared RoB and RQ between

Meta-analysis of the comparative efficacy of benzodiazepines and antidepressants for psychic versus somatic symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines and antidepressants are effective agents for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), with the HAM-A frequently used as a primary outcome measure. The GAD literature is inconsistent regarding which medications are more effective for somatic versus psychic symptoms of GAD, and treatment guidelines do not advocate for prescribing based on subtype. This meta-analysis aimed to determine whether benzodiazepines and antidepressants have a differential impact on the somatic versus psychic subscales of the HAM-A in GAD. METHODS: An electronic search was underta

Women's Health Across the Lifespan: A Sex- and Gender-Focused Perspective.

Women's health in physical therapy has historically focused on sexual and reproductive health. The biological and social constructs of sex and gender, respectively, are determinants of health, including pathophysiology of disease and therapeutic outcomes, and an expansion of the concept of "women's health" is warranted. This Perspective explores the role of sex and gender as key determinants of women's and girls' health and highlights the factors pertinent to physical therapist practice. The Scale for the Assessment for Narrative Review Articles (SANRA), a 6-point assessment to evaluate the qu

Approaching virtual osteoid volume estimation and in-depth tissue characterization in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) poses a significant diagnostic challenge, leading to increased disease duration and patient burden also by missing clinical suspicion. Today, diagnosis of osteomalacia relies on invasive iliac crest biopsy, if needed. Therefore, a noninvasive method would be beneficial for patients with severe osteomalacia, such as TIO, to inform their clinical management and address specific needs, like estimating the regeneration capacity at high osteoid volumes (OVs) or the potential of a hungry bone syndrome after tumor removal. Furthermore, given the lack of comprehensive
