BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) as an adjunct lesion in patients with upper extremity trauma has not been investigated in a Central European setting so far, despite of its devastating long-term consequences. This study evaluates a large multinational trauma registry for prevalence, mechanisms, injury severity and outcome characteristics of upper limb nerve lesions.
METHODS: After formal approval the TraumaRegister DGU® (TR-DGU) was searched for severely injured cases with upper extremity involvement between 2002 and 2015. Patients were separated into two cohorts with regard to prese

INTRODUCTION: Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a less invasive palliative treatment for intractable epilepsy and was approved for use in Japan in July 2010. Surgical complications of VNS such as vagal nerve dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmia with asystole, and vocal cord palsy as well as complications arising from fracture of the leads or generator and infections are well known in the West. The aim of the present report is to describe the surgical complications encountered in our hospital and discuss their countermeasures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records of 26 patients who

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the ultrastructural effects of electronic cigarettes' (EC) exposure in rat lingual nerves and muscles and a … amin C effectively mitigates EC-induced oxidative stress and ultrastructural damage in muscular and nerve tissues. Vitamin C alone offers insufficient protection, mostly supporting muscular recovery without significantly improving nerve integrity or oxidative status.

The pathogenesis of marionette lines involves a complex interplay of anatomical, physiological, and age-related factors leading to the development of wrinkles around the oral commissures. This exploration delves into the distinct anatomical predispositions observed among different ethnicities, emphasizing the role of compact modiolus structures and muscle compositions. Notably, individuals of East Asian descent exhibit inherent facial structures that predispose them to pronounced sagging around the oral commissures during aging. The emergence of distinct facial lines, such as the commissural l

Clinical use of the chemotherapeutic agent vincristine (VCR) is limited by chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CiPN). A new formulation of VCR encapsulated by nanoparticles has been proposed and developed to alleviate CiPN. We hypothesized in nonclinical animals that the nanoparticle drug would be less neurotoxic due to different absorption and distribution properties to the peripheral nerve from the unencapsulated free drug. Here, we assessed whether VCR encapsulation in nanoparticles alleviates CiPN using behavioral gait analysis (CatWalk), histopathologic and molecular biological (R

Cholinergic agonists, like levamisole, are a major class of anthelmintic drugs that are known to act selectively on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on the somatic muscle and nerves of nematode parasites to produce their contraction and spastic paralysis. Previous studies have suggested that in addition to the nAChRs found on muscle and nerves, there are nAChRs on non-excitable tissues of nematode parasites. We looked for evidence of nAChRs expression in the cells of the intestine of the large pig nematode, Ascaris suum, using RT-PCR and RNAscope in situ hybridization and detected mR

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent neurovascular disorder characterized by growth of endometrial tissue (lesions) outside the uterine cavity. Patients suffer chronic pelvic pain, and it has been proposed that co-recruitment of nerves/blood vessels (neuroangiogenesis) into the lesions is fundamental to the development of painful symptoms. We hypothesized that estrogen-dependent regulation of axonal guidance molecules of the SLIT/ROBO (Roundabout) family could play a role in neuroangiogenesis occurring in endometriosis lesions found on the peritoneal wall. In tissue samples from human patien

Schwann cells (SCs), olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), and central nervous system Schwann cell-like glia (SG) represent a group of nerve growth factor receptor p75 (NGFR)-positive cells, originating from different tissues. Because of their pro-regenerative capacities, these cells are subjects in experimental transplantation-based therapies of spinal cord trauma. The objective of this study was to compare the transcriptomes of uninfected and canine distemper virus-infected OECs, SCs, SG and fibroblasts (FBs) derived from four beagle dogs and cultured under identical conditions in vitro, emplo

Programmed cell death is a prominent feature of neural development that is regulated by a variety of cell-cell interactions. We used the avian ciliary ganglion to dissect the relative contributions of target tissues vs. ganglionic inputs in regulating cell death. The two populations of the ciliary ganglion innervate different targets: choroid neurons innervate vasculature, whereas ciliary neurons innervate the iris and ciliary body. By counting after labeling all neurons with Islet-1 and choroid neurons with anti-somatostatin, we determined that alpha-bungarotoxin (alpha-btx) at 12.5 microg/da

Major replantation of a traction avulsion amputation is undertaken with the goal of not only the reestablishment of circulation, but also functional outcome. This type of amputation is characterized by different levels of soft-tissue divisions involving crushing, traction, and avulsion injuries to various structures. Between 1985 and 1998, 27 cases were referred for secondary reconstruction following amputation of the upper extremity involving both arm and forearm. Replantation was performed by at least 12 qualified plastic surgeons using different approaches and management, resulting in diffe

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEE) causes a biphasic disease in mice following subcutaneous inoculation in the footpad. In the initial phase, virus replicates primarily in the lymphoid tissues and induces a high titer viremia. Subsequently, the virus invades the central nervous system (CNS) from the circulation, and an encephalitis ensues. At the earliest times that VEE specific in situ hybridization signal was observed in the CNS, it was in areas of the brain involved in olfaction, leading to the hypothesis that virus may invade the brain from the circulation through the olfactory sys

The peripheral olfactory nervous system exhibits, uniquely, neuronal cell body replacement and reestablishment of central connections in adult mammals. The role of the olfactory nerve glia in these phenomena is unknown, but information might be provided by in vitro systems. This paper reports on the characterization of olfactory nerve glia in dissociated cell cultures of newborn rat nasal mucosal tissues. The predominant type of glial cell resembled Schwann cells and immunostained for the S-100 protein, found in all glial cell types; glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), found in astrocytes

Adult rats maintained at 20-22 degrees C, were exposed to 4 degrees C for 30-60 min and injected with 50 or 100 mg/kg 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in an attempt to achieve a similar degree of chemical sympathectomy of nerves terminating among the adipocytes and the smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels in the interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT). After 1, 4 or 10 days the pads of BAT were removed and small sections from each pad prepared for electron microscopy; the remaining tissue was used for noradrenaline (NA) analysis for fluorescence histochemistry. Ultrastructural observations show

The regeneration of peripheral nerves after injury is often slow and impaired, which may be associated with weakened and denervated muscles subsequently leading to atrophy. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are often regarded as cell-based therapeutic candidate due to their regenerative potential. The study aims to assess the therapeutic efficacy of gene-modified ADSCs on sciatic nerve injury. We lentivirally transduced ADSCs with shRNA-TWIST1 and transplanted modified cells to rats undergoing sciatic nerve transection and repair. Results showed that TWIST1 knockdown accelerated functional re

Vomeronasal neurons undergo continuous neurogenesis during development and after neuronal injury. We used immunocytochemical methods to compare different stages of the vomeronasal organ development to those of regeneration following vomeronasal nerve transection. At E15 and at 6 to 10 days after injury, nestin-positive cells were observed throughout the sensory epithelium. We did not find nestin immunoreactivity to be localized to the boundary region of the epithelium. The early appearance and wide distribution of nestin-positive cells suggests that they represent chemosensory precursor cells

In adult mammals, learning, memory, and restoration of sensorimotor lost functions imply synaptic reorganization that requires diffusible messengers-mediated communication between presynaptic and postsynaptic structures. A candidate molecule to accomplish this function is the gaseous intercellular messenger nitric oxide (NO), which is involved in synaptogenesis and projection refinement during development; however, the role of NO in synaptic reorganization processes in adulthood remains to be established. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that this free radical is a mediator in the adult

Spinal and brainstem motoneurons of the adult rat reexpress low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (LNGFR) and its mRNA after axotomy. We have previously reported the time courses of this reexpression after cut (no regeneration) or crush (followed by regeneration) of the sciatic nerve. We have shown that the length of the different phases of this reexpression (appearance, maintenance and disappearance) can vary according to the type of axotomy. With the present study we expand our previous data and describe and analyze the modulation the LNGFR expression in adult spinal cord motoneurons fol

Glucocorticoid hormones (GC) are major regulators of stress, metabolism, and immunity. Glucocorticoid compounds are frequently used in medicine due to their effective actions as immunomodulators, but they can also present devastating side effects. GC bind to two corticosteroid receptors mediating their effects: the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). Despite extensive studies on the role of these receptors in most tissues and organs very little data is available on their role in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Schwann cells (SC) are the main glial cells o
