Advising your clients on a healthy holiday.

Immunisations often need to be started two or three months before departure, so advise clients to consult the practice in good time. A pre-travel health interview can be an excellent focus for health education. Parents of young children going abroad may benefit from advice on infant feeding avoiding sunburn and being up to date with immunisations. Advice on prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections is useful, especially for parents of young children. Giving the correct advice for malaria is particularly important. For example, many patients who formerly lived in malarious areas w

Nutritional rickets in San Diego.

Despite the ability of infants to synthesize vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, nutritional rickets occasionally develops in infants even in areas with perennially sunny climates. In San Diego, a 1-year-old breast-fed infant presented with classic signs of nutritional rickets. Unsupplemented breast milk, limited exposure to sunlight, and darkly pigmented skin were predisposing factors. Because of this occurrence, we conducted a survey of vitamin supplementation practices among pediatricians in San Diego. Twenty-nine percent of 160 respondents do not prescribe vitamin D supplements for bre

Methodological Insights From Evaluating a Family Member's Voice Reorientation Programme: An Interpretive Descriptive Approach.

BACKGROUND: Interpretive descriptive design is a well-established methodology in healthcare research, offering novel insights into complex phenomena that may elude other qualitative methods. Although interpretive descriptive is effective in translating findings into clinical practice, its application to intensive care unit interventions remains limited. The intricate nature of the intensive care unit environment and the vulnerability of this patient group, necessitates methodologies that delve deeply into interactions and translate them into practical solutions. OBJECTIVE: This study applies

The Experience of Acute Mechanical Ventilation From the Patient's Perspective.

BACKGROUND: The Pain, Agitation, and Delirium guidelines influenced practice to support targeted, light sedation for the mechanically ventilated patient. This practice is associated with improved clinical outcomes, but it remains unclear how it impacts the patient experience. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the pervasive patient experience components and how the experience may have been influenced by targeted, light sedation practices. METHODS: A prospective observational study using mixed methodology and a convenience sample was conducted after institutional review board approval

Determinants of intrinsic capacity among older adults in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity (IC), as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), represents the composite of an individual's physical and mental capacities and forms a cornerstone of the healthy aging framework. Understanding its determinants is essential for designing effective interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where population aging is accelerating amid limited resources and fragmented health systems. Mapping these determinants supports evidence-based strategies that enhance functional ability and resilience among older adults. OBJECTIVE: This sc

Adapting the serious illness conversation guide for unhoused older adults: a rapid qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults experiencing homelessness (OAEH) age quickly and die earlier than their housed counterparts. Illness-related decisions are best guided by patients' values, but healthcare and homelessness service providers need support in facilitating these discussions. The Serious Illness Conversation Guide (SICG) is a communication tool to guide discussions but has not yet been adapted for OAEH. METHODS: We aimed to adapt the SICG for use with OAEH by nurses, social workers, and other homelessness service providers. We conducted semi-structured interviews with homelessness service p

Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Stroke Rehabilitation on Awareness, Activities of Daily Living and Coping in Stroke Patients at a Tertiary Care Hospital in India.

Introduction Stroke is a major global cause of mortality and disability, with many survivors lacking awareness. Nurses play a pivotal role in the early identification and management of symptoms with regard to stroke. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of stroke rehabilitation on awareness, activity of daily living (ADL) and coping among stroke patients. Methods A quasi-experimental approach was used, with 60 stroke patients (30 patients in the study and 30 patients in the control group) selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. The pre-test on stroke aware

Based on the relationship between anxiety of existential meaninglessness, hope level, and fear of progression, explored the effect of preoperative nursing with Orem theory in the senile cataract population.

BACKGROUND: Cataracts, characterized by a decrease in vision due to the clouding of the lens, can progress to blindness in advanced stages. The rising incidence of cataract cases has led to a significant number of patients experiencing negative emotions associated with vision loss, thereby diminishing their quality of life. In clinical practice, it is imperative for healthcare professionals to consider the psychological well-being of cataract patients. Currently, there is a scarcity of research focusing on psychological evaluations, such as assessing feelings of meaninglessness among individua

Prospective study to optimize the health of patients with TIAS (transient ischemic attack) and stroke admitted to the Hamad General Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent ischemic strokes (IS) make up to one-third of all strokes. Nine out of 10 strokes are due to modifiable risk factors. Thus, it seems that standard management strategies of modifiable risk factors are yet to improve. Hence, we planned a randomized controlled trial assessing nurses or pharmacists-led aggressive control of comorbidities and their prognostic impact on IS and transient ischemic attacks (TIA). METHODS/DESIGN: Prospective study to optimize the health of patients with TIAs and stroke admitted to the Hamad General Hospital (PROMOTE HEALTH) is an assessor-blinde

Nurses' Clinical Alarm-Related Behaviors and Their Associated Factors in Malawian Critical Care Units: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding nurses' clinical alarm-related behaviors is crucial for enhancing patient safety in critical care settings. These settings operate under significant constraints that profoundly influence how nurses prioritize and respond to alarms. While suboptimal alarm management has been extensively studied in well-resourced settings, research remains scarce in resource-constrained settings. This study aimed to evaluate nurses' clinical alarm-related behaviors and their associated factors in critical care units within resource-limited contexts. METHODS: An analytical cross-section

Paradigms of Canadian nurse managers: lenses for viewing leadership and management.

To an extent unprecedented in history, healthcare is a complex and human enterprise. Generating the complexity are stakeholders with more diverse perspectives, needs, and agendas, and greater knowledge and vested interest than ever before. Given their pivotal position between the direct-care environment and external stakeholders, nurse managers can no longer rely on the hierarchy, authority, and linear thinking afforded by traditional management; in order to accomplish they must lead people by working through them. Ironically, when needed most, there is a lack of consensus in the literature ab

Coexistence and prevalence of obstetric interventions: an analysis based on the grade of membership.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric interventions performed during delivery do not reflect improvements in obstetric care. Several practices routinely performed during childbirth, without any scientific evidence or basis - such as Kristeller maneuver, routine episiotomy, and movement or feeding restriction - reflect a disrespectful assistance reality that, unfortunately, remains in place in Brazil. The aims of the current study are to assess the coexistence and prevalence of obstetric interventions in maternity hospitals in Belo Horizonte City, based on the Grade of Membership (GoM) method, as well as to in

Validation of a Turkish Translation of the Stress in Emergency Healthcare Professionals: The Stress Factors and Manifestations Scale.

AIM: The primary duties of emergency healthcare professionals (EHPs) are to provide emergency patient care to acutely ill and injured individuals. Due to the nature of their work, EHPs operate under constant stress, often requiring rapid decision-making, swift action, and the delivery of necessary medical care in life-or-death situations, sometimes under inadequately safe conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the Emergency Healthcare Professional Stress Factors and Symptoms (SEHP:SFMS) Scale in Turkish for identifying stress factors and sy
