Impact of muffle furnace preparation on the results of crystalline silica analysis.

A prior report demonstrated an unacceptably low level of accuracy in silica analytical testing, with a general negative bias (i.e., underreporting) although other inaccuracies included false-positive results when analyzing blank filters. The possible bias may have been due to the loss of sample during shipping and or sample preparation. We report on a follow-up study that was designed to mimic the original study, but in which sources of variability were evaluated. We found no effect on silica recoveries due to shipping and confirmed the prior study results that the muffle furnace ashing proces

Hand safety for specialty crop production workers: a pilot study investigating frequencies of minor open-wound hand injuries and presence of pathogenic bacteria.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the presence of minor open-wound hand injuries in addition to Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, coliforms, and Escherichia coli on the hands of farm workers who hand-harvest fruit crops in Utah. Data collection was conducted on four farms without USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification and on two farms with GAP certification. This study identified essential safety issues that need to be addressed for improving the effectiveness of safety training for migrant farm workers. Farms that have a food safety audit program in place are less likel

Ergonomic evaluation of a wheelchair transportation securement system.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies guidelines covering the securement system and environment for wheeled mobility device (WhMD) passengers on the public bus system in the United States, referred to as the wheelchair tiedown and occupant restraint system (WTORS). The misuse or disuse of the WTORS system can be a source of injury for WhMD passengers riding the buses. The purpose of this study was to quantify the risks posed to the bus driver while performing the WTORS procedure using traditional ergonomic analysis methods. Four bus drivers completed the WTORS procedure for a rep

Primary bowing tremor: a task-specific movement disorder of string instrumentalists.

Fear of a tremulous or unsteady bow is widespread among string instrumentalists. Faulty technique and performance anxiety have generally been blamed. The cases of 4 high-level violinists and 1 violist, 3 women and 2 men, with uncontrollable bow tremor are presented. Age at onset was from 16 to 75 years, and symptom duration 8 months to 20 years at the time of neurological evaluation. The degree of tremor varied with type of bow stroke and even the portion of the bow contacting the string. Only 1 patient had a slight postural tremor of the opposite limb. In 3 of 5 the tremor was task-specific;

Robotic-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention--filling an unmet need.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has undergone a remarkable evolution over the past 25 years. Initially, the procedure was limited to relatively straightforward lesions and was associated with significant risk and unpredictable long-term efficacy. With the incorporation of new technologies such as stents, the safety and efficacy of the procedure has improved dramatically. However, the fundamental way in which the procedure is performed has changed little since the time of Gruntzig's first successful case. Cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation, orthopedic injuries resulting from wea

Alertness management strategies for operational contexts.

This review addresses the problem of fatigue (on-the-job-sleepiness) attributable to sleep loss in modern society and the scientifically proven strategies useful for reducing fatigue-related risks. Fatigue has become pervasive because many people work non-standard schedules, and/or they consistently fail to obtain sufficient sleep. Sleep restriction, sleep deprivation, and circadian desynchronization produce a variety of decrements in cognitive performance as well as an array of occupational and health risks. A number of real-world mishaps have resulted from performance failures associated wit

Continuous measurement of peak hydrogen fluoride exposures in aluminum smelter potrooms: instrument development and in-plant evaluation.

The aluminum smelting process continuously evolves both sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) gases. The vast majority of these evolved gases are captured by local exhaust ventilation systems and transported to fume treatment centers. Any gas escaping the ventilation systems could create the potential for workplace exposures. Currently, there are no commercially available sensors that are capable of selectively measuring peak concentrations (< 10 sec) of HF in the presence of SO2. This measurement capability is critical for facilitating a better understanding of the etiology of respi

Brucellosis in the UK: a risk to laboratory workers? Recommendations for prevention and management of laboratory exposure.

Brucella spp is an uncommon class 3 pathogen isolated in laboratories serving non-endemic areas. This is a report of four recent cases of brucellosis diagnosed at five different London laboratories, and it highlights the need to maintain a high index of suspicion for brucellosis in patients with a history of travel to and/or consumption of unpasteurized foods from endemic areas. A protocol for risk categorisation is proposed, and there is a description of the strategy adopted for serological follow-up of exposed staff and use of postexposure prophylaxis.

Field method for the determination of insoluble or total hexavalent chromium in workplace air.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solid-phase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using t

Inpatient hospital admission rates for nonmalignant respiratory disease among workers exposed to metal removal fluids at a U.S. automobile manufacturer.

This study was undertaken to determine the impact of exposure to metal removal fluids (MRFs) on the respiratory health of exposed workers. The outcome measure selected was the rate of hospital admissions for nonmalignant respiratory disease episodes as determined from healthcare insurance claims data. A cohort of MRF-exposed employees was assembled from 11 manufacturing facilities where MRFs were extensively used in the manufacture of automotive engines, transmissions, and other machined parts. The MRF-exposed cohort included 20,434 employees of such facilities who worked at any time from 1993

[Hand injuries in workers on the eastern shore of Marcaibo Lake in the state of Zulia, Venezuela, 1986-1993].

In order to analyze the frequency, injury rate and cause of on site accidents to the hands of workers on the east coast of lake of Maracaibo in Zulia State, data was obtained from the accident reports registered with the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security. An occupational hand injury was defined as a traumatic injury to the hands, fingers or wrists that occurred while the employee was at work; that resulted from a single exposure to a hazardous agent. The following variables were analyzed: age, severity, economic activity, material agent, mechanic cause, type of injury, type of accident a

Monitoring of low level arsenic exposure during maintenance of ion implanters.

To delineate potential exposure in ion implanter maintenance, the authors recruited 21 maintenance engineers (exposed group) and 10 computer programmers (controls) at three semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Samples of air, wipes, and urine; used cleaning cloths; and used gloves were collected for the characterization of arsenic exposure. Arsenic levels were very low in environmental samples, but high arsenic levels were found in some wipe samples, used cleaning cloths, and gloves. The average baseline content of urinary arsenic measured for maintenance engineers was 3.6 microg/g creatini

Orthopantomography and INAIL assessment of dental injury. Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro.

The protection of workers' health is defended by the Italian Constitution, and sees its most extensive application in the work of the INAIL (Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro-National Institute for Assurance against Work-related Accidents). In the T.U. (Testo Unico-Complete Text of Legislation) 1124/1965, dental injury is compensated with fixed percentages for permanent impairment, depending on whether the prosthesis applied is effectual or otherwise. The INAIL's primary task of assigning the necessary treatment and recovering the claimant's occupational ap
