Condylar fractures (CFs) are about 30% of mandibular fractures. Condylar fractures are treated with several protocols, and unsatisfying outcome is achieved in some cases. A staging system for classifying CFs is of paramount importance to plan therapy, to define prognosis, and to exchange information among trauma centers. The Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group proposed a classification system for CFs, but no report focusing to its effectiveness is still available. Thus, we performed a retrospective study on a series of patients affected by CFs.The Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group

UNLABELLED: Treatment of radial head fractures may be complicated because of the presence of associated lesions. However, little is known about the frequency or relevance of associated lesions in different types of radial head fractures. We studied the demographics of radial head fractures focusing on associated lesions in 333 adults from 1997 to 2002. The mean age of the patients was 45 years (range, 18-82 years). Two hundred twenty-three (67%) patients had Mason Type 1 fractures, 46 patients had Mason Type 2 (14%) fractures, and 64 patients had Mason Type 3 (19%) fractures. One hundred eight

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reviewed patients who were treated and followed-up for mandibular fractures within a 10-year period.
METHODS: A total of 204 patients (158 males, 46 females; mean age 22.4 years; range 5 to 72 years) were retrospectively evaluated with respect to age groups, sex, etiology, associated injuries, localization and type of the fractures, treatment methods, and early and late complications. The follow-up period ranged from four months to 10 years.
RESULTS: The most common cause of injury was traffic accidents (44.1%), followed by falling (31.8%), and violence (17.1%)

BACKGROUND: Simple elbow dislocations are often treated with closed reduction (CR); however, the rate of CR failure and factors that may predict failure have been largely underinvestigated. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the incidence of elbow dislocations treated by CR in a universal health care system and (2) to identify patient characteristics associated with failed CR, defined as the subsequent need for open reduction.
METHODS: Patients ≥16 years old who underwent elbow CR by a physician between 1994 and 2010 were identified from administrative databases. Concurrent el

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to illustrate a case in which the use of a dorsal spanning plate followed by volar plating may be indicated in the setting of a complex intra-articular distal radius fracture. Combined dorsal spanning plate and volar plating is a rare procedure reserved typically for comminuted fractures of the distal radius. This case highlights the first reported incidence in which a dorsal spanning plate of a distal radius fracture resulted in the volar displacement of the fragments, requiring subsequent volar plating. In the end, the outcome was favorable, as the foll

BACKGROUND: Screening and management of osteoporosis is often only considered by providers when patients present with multiple fragility fractures. The objective was to determine which patients are at risk for not receiving anti-osteoporotic medication and screening immediately following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) for hip fracture.
METHODS: The 2018 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) Targeted Hip Fracture Database was queried to identify patients ≥ 50 years old who underwent ORIF of femoral neck, intertrochanteric hip, and subtr

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures can lead to radial nerve injury and may require surgery and rehabilitation. We determined the causative events of humeral fracture, including arm wrestling, in young Korean soldiers and examined whether humeral fracture is related to demographic characteristics and the presence of radial nerve palsy.
METHODS: We reviewed 7.5 years (July 2012 to June 2019) of medical records covering patients who had experienced a humeral shaft fracture after entering military service and had received surgery for open reduction and internal fixation. Data were obtained on

We present a case of a 61-year-old female with history of long-term bisphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis initially diagnosed by screening dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). After 4 years of treatment with bisphosphonates, the patient presented to primary care with left hip pain. Diagnostic hip radiographs were interpreted as normal, and she continued to take bisphosphonates. Two months later, she experienced a complete transverse subtrochanteric left femur fracture after minimal trauma. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation. Review of the patient's postoperative fi

CASE: We describe a case of posterior hip dislocation in a 13-year-old boy after a contact football injury with attempted closed reduction resulting in complete separation of the epiphysis from the femoral neck metaphysis with associated femoral head fracture and posterior dislocation of the femoral head. Treatment was emergently performed with a greater trochanteric osteotomy, open reduction internal fixation using cannulated screws, and additional small diameter drill holes in the femoral head to promote blood flow. The patient did well postoperatively and at over 4 years follow-up had no ev

INTRODUCTION: Vascular injury associated withclosed posterior elbow dislocations is rare and it usually occurs along with open dislocation, anterior dislocation, penetrating injuries, dislocations associated with fracture. We report such a case of closed posterior elbow dislocation with complete brachial artery rupture.
CASE REPORT: A 58 years old lady sustained posterior dislocation of right elbow following a fall at home. She presented three days later with complaints of severe pain, swelling around the right elbow and numbness of fingers following a closed reduction done elsewhere. Compute

Radial head dislocation in children is usually associated with complete elbow dislocation or occurs as a part of a Monteggia injury. In patients without an obvious fracture of the ulna, recognizing that plastic deformation of the ulna leads to pathological bowing is a key concept in the management of this injury. Although good results have been published using osteotomy of the ulna to maintain stability after open reduction, we hypothesize that ulnar osteotomy alone may be enough to enable stable enlocation of an irreducible radial head in patients who are identified early. We present two case

Deep bone abscesses are a rare complication following a pin tract infection. This article shows the importance of early detection, surgical management, and microbiology-guided antibiotic therapy to treat the abscess. We aim to highlight the key presenting factors, the radiological signs, and intraoperative features of a deep bone abscess, to facilitate detection in these rare circumstances. Closed or open reduction and internal fixation with Kirschner wires (K-wires) has become the standard of care for displaced supracondylar fractures. Although pin tract infection (PTI) is the most common com

Traction tables have been widely used by orthopaedic surgeons for the management of femoral shaft fractures. Although complications associated with their use are uncommon, they can still occur. Among neurological complications, sciatic and pudendal nerve palsies are the most frequently reported. Recognizing the potential causes and analyzing these complications are crucial for raising awareness among surgeons and implementing preventive strategies to enhance patient safety during surgical procedures. A 22-year-old male sustained a comminuted fracture of the left femoral shaft following a road

The optimal treatment for proximal humeral fractures is controversial. Few data exist concerning the influence of the surgical approach on the outcome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of proximal humeral fractures treated with locking plate fixation through a deltopectoral vs an anterolateral deltoid-splitting approach. Of 86 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 70 were available for follow-up examination. Thirty-three patients were treated through a deltopectoral approach and 37 through an anterolateral deltoid-splitting approach. In all ca

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The extended deltoid-splitting approach was developed as an alternative to the deltopectoral approach in the treatment of three- and four-part proximal humeral fractures. The aim of our prospective study was to determine whether this approach was associated with evidence of nerve injury, functional deficits or other complications in these cases, during the first year following reconstruction.
METHODS: Over a 1-year-period, we treated 14 people (median age 59 years) with open reduction and plate fixation using the extended deltoid-splitting approach. All were prospectiv

BACKGROUND: Sternoclavicular dislocations are relatively infrequent and are generally divided into anterior and posterior disruptions, the former being the most common. While posterior sternoclavicular joint (PSCJ) injuries are very rare, they may be associated with life-threatening complications. The ideal management of these injuries, particularly in the adolescent population, has not been well described.
PURPOSE: Through a meta-analysis of PSCJ injuries in the adolescent, we aimed to (1) describe the epidemiology of PSCJ injuries in relation to the mechanism of injury, associated complicat
