PURPOSE: The aim of the present paper is to verify the long-term results in dental and skeletal stability in terms of symmetry, occlusion and functional balance by the association between the IS and the SF technique.
METHODS: In this paper, the authors described 12 cases of severe class III malocclusion treated by the association between the IS and the SF technique.
RESULTS: At 1 year of post-orthodontic follow up, the patients present an Angle class I occlusal relationship, no deep bite, no scissor or cross-bite and no open bite. No one patient referred TMJ discomfort nor severe post-surgic

This case report intends to provide the facial characteristics of Escobar syndrome and to describe the orthodontic treatment of a 12-year-old female patient diagnosed with it. Escobar syndrome, a variant of the multiple pterygium syndrome, is a rare disorder with many systemic, facial, and oral manifestations. The patient presented with mixed dentition, severe dolichofacial pattern, increased lower facial height, convex profile, severe anterior open bite, maxillary hypoplasia, and mandibular retrognatism. The multidisciplinary approach included soft cleft palate repair, orthodontic treatment, o

The teeth become very close to each other when they are crowded, but their structures remain individualized and, in this situation, the role of the epithelial rests of Malassez is fundamental to release the EGF. The concept of tensegrity is fundamental to understand the responses of tissues submitted to forces in body movements, including teeth and their stability in this process. The factors of tooth position stability in the arch - or dental tensegrity - should be considered when one plans and perform an orthodontic treatment. The direct causes of the mandibular anterior crowding are decisiv

When seeking orthodontic treatment, many adolescents and adult patients present with deciduous teeth. Naturally, deciduous teeth will inevitably undergo exfoliation at the expected time or at a later time. Apoptosis is the biological trigger of root resorption. In adult patients, deciduous teeth should not be preserved, as they promote: infraocclusion, traumatic occlusion, occlusal trauma, diastemata and size as well as morphology discrepancy malocclusion. Orthodontic movement speeds root resorption up, and so do restoring or recontouring deciduous teeth in order to establish esthetics and fun

A predictable aesthetic restoration is not limited to the restored teeth; it has to include the gingival unit and its interface with the teeth involved. Orthodontic forced eruption may be a suitable approach without risking the aesthetic appearance in tooth fracture below the gingival attachment or alveolar bone crest. It is a well-documented clinical method for altering the relation between a non-restorable tooth and its attachment apparatus, elevating sound tooth material from within the alveolar socket to create a ferrule effect which is considered to be crucial for the optimal biomechanica

Any type of aesthetic correction in dental practice is always a challenging task, especially when it is complicated with cleft lip and alveolus. Careful examination and correct decision making at early stage of treatment and multi disciplinary approach is always necessary for long term success. This paper described a multidisciplinary approach in managing a 19-year-old female patient with unilateral cleft alveolus impacted maxillary canine , missing lateral incisor and hypoplastic central incisor by surgical , orthodontic and prosthodontic means. The impacted canine was surgically exposed and

Supernumerary teeth are teeth in excess of the normal series occurring in any region of the dental arch. They are located mostly in the anterior maxillary region and are classified according to their location and morphology. The tuberculate type of supernumerary tooth possesses more than one cusp or tubercle (barrel shaped). It is rare to find bilateral tuberculate supernumerary teeth in the premaxillary region and when found they rarely erupt. This report describes a 13-year-old boy with erupted palatally placed bilateral tuberculate supernumerary teeth. The presence of these supernumerary te

Twinned teeth usually appear in the anterior region of the dental arch. Besides orthodontic malocclusions, such as protrusion, crowding, or diastema, they also cause esthetic problems. Different treatment methods can be used according to the requirements of the situation. This article reports multidisciplinary treatment of 2 patients whose maxillary central teeth were twinned with supernumerary incisors. The twinned tooth was reshaped following endodontic treatment in 1 of the patients and orthodontic treatment was performed with edgewise mechanics. In the second case, however, it was determin

Facial asymmetry in hemifacial microsomia can be corrected by an effective procedure of gradual distraction of the mandible. In younger children with deciduous dentition, changes in dental occlusion secondary from mandibular distraction can be easily corrected with orthodontic treatment. In older patients, mandibular elongation through distraction osteogenesis can produce good aesthetics but can create a severe alteration in occlusion requiring complex orthodontic treatment during an extended period. A Le Fort I osteotomy was performed simultaneously with mandibular corticotomy to avoid this p

A disturbance in the normal eruption pattern of one or both of the maxillary canines is found in 1% to 2% of the teenagers aged ten to thirteen years. Frequently, dentists refer these patients to orthodontists who, in turn, seek the assistance of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to retrieve the impacted canine, either by exposure alone or by exposure and attachment of a bracket and ligature for orthodontic extrusion. A common request in this procedure is the extraction of the persistent upper deciduous canine and/or, in case of an Angle Class II molar relationship, extraction of the upper fir

Mandibular elongation by gradual distraction in patients with hemifacial microsomia is a simple and effective procedure to correct facial asymmetry. The changes in mandibular dimension result in changes in dental occlusion. These are minimal in children because of the rapid growth of the maxilla and can be corrected easily with minor orthodontic treatment. Mandibular distraction in adults with hemifacial microsomia produces good aesthetic results but leaves the patient with a severe alteration in the occlusion requiring complex orthodontic treatment over a long period of time. To avoid this pr

INTRODUCTION: Variations in mandibular morphology may significantly influence orthodontic treatment planning, particularly in different growth patterns. This study aimed to evaluate mandibular morphology using orthopantomogram (OPG) analyses to quantify the differences in ramus height, mandibular body length, gonial angle, and condylar morphology across different growth patterns, thereby providing insights for personalized orthodontic interventions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the records of 120 subjects with skeletal Class I malocclusion, aged 18-3

BACKGROUND/AIM: The high rate of root resorption resulting from tooth replantation represents a serious clinical problem. In order to prevent ankylosis and replacement resorption, the contemporary literature highlights the importance of using a flexible stabilization for traumatized teeth. For this purpose, orthodontic devices may be promising for obtaining a better prognosis and periodontal repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an active splinting protocol with controlled force in dog's teeth following replantation.
