Parental Reports of Children's Dental Pain Experience and Associated Factors among Brazilian Children.

Exploring children's dental pain experiences helps to develop healthcare policies for improving oral health and quality of life. A cross-sectional study involved 300 parents/caregivers of four- to seven-year-old children using snowball sampling. Parents/caregivers self-completed an online questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics, parenting styles, their child's oral hygiene practices, free sugar consumption, and dental history. The questionnaire was created using Google Forms and was disseminated to parents/caregivers via E-mail and/or WhatsApp©. Descriptive and Poisson regression ana…

Atrophy in the supramarginal gyrus associated with impaired cognitive inhibition in grieving Chinese Shidu parents.

Background: The loss of an only child, known as Shidu in China, is a profoundly distressing experience, often leading to Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). Despite its impact, the structural brain alterations associated with PGD, potentially influencing cognitive impairments in Shidu parents, remain understudied. Objective: This study aims to identify brain structural abnormalities related to prolonged grief and their relation with cognitive inhibition in Shidu parents. Methods: The study included 40 Shidu parents and 42 non-bereaved participants. Prolonged grief was evaluated using the Prolonged G

My grief app for prolonged grief in bereaved parents: a randomised waitlist-controlled trial.

A minority of bereaved adults experiences prolonged grief disorder, depression, and/or posttraumatic stress disorder, with heightened risks observed among bereaved parents. Cognitive-behavioural therapies, both face-to-face and online, have demonstrated efficacy in treating post-loss mental health problems. Mobile phone applications potentially offer an efficient and cost-effective way to deliver self-help to bereaved adults, yet controlled effectiveness studies are lacking. Therefore, we examined the short-term efficacy of the My Grief app, based on cognitive-behavioural therapy, in 248 berea

Parental status and markers of brain and cellular age: A 3D convolutional network and classification study.

Recent research shows prominent effects of pregnancy and the parenthood transition on structural brain characteristics in humans. Here, we present a comprehensive study of how parental status and number of children born/fathered links to markers of brain and cellular ageing in 36,323 UK Biobank participants (age range 44.57-82.06 years; 52% female). To assess global effects of parenting on the brain, we trained a 3D convolutional neural network on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images, and estimated brain age in a held-out test set. To investigate regional specificity, we extracted cortical an…

Long-term durability between parent and child patient-reported outcomes in eosinophilic esophagitis.

BACKGROUND: Because young children cannot self-report symptoms, there is a need for parent surrogate reports. Although early work suggested parent-child alignment for eosinophil esophagitis (EoE) patient-reported outcomes (PROs), the longitudinal alignment is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the agreement and longitudinal stability of PROs between children with EoE and their parents. METHODS: A total of 292 parent-child respondents completed 723 questionnaires over 5 years in an observational trial in the Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers. The change in a

Parental age at birth, telomere length, and autism spectrum disorders in the UK Biobank cohort.

Older parental age at birth is associated with increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in offspring. Independently, shorter telomere length (TL) has also been shown to be associated with ASD in children. However, older paternal age at birth, with or without controlling for maternal age, has been associated with longer TL, a seemingly contradictory finding. Here, we conducted a retrospective cohort study among participants in the UK Biobank to disentangle associations between leukocyte TL and ASD status in adults, and the potential moderation by parental age on adult offspring's TL. Parent-Report Sleep Disturbances and Everyday Executive Functioning Difficulties in Children with Tourette Syndrome.

There is an increasing need to identify and treat sleep disturbances in Tourette syndrome (TS), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by tics. This study explored sleep, tics, and executive functioning in children with TS (n=136) and neurotypical controls (n=101) through parent-report scales and open-ended questions. 85% of children with TS scored in the clinical range for a sleep disorder. Higher tic severity predicted increased sleep disturbances and executive difficulties. Qualitative insights indicated a bidirectional link between sleep and tics, which warrants consideration in clin

Parental Consanguinity and Family History in Relation to Psoriasis and the Role of Sex: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is caused by an interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Parental consanguinity increases homozygosity in the genome of the offspring, which in turn increases disease risk. The association between parental consanguinity and psoriasis in the offspring remains unexplored. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the association of parental consanguinity and family history with psoriasis in the offspring and to determine whether sex modulates the aforementioned associations. METHODS: A case-control study enrolled adults aged 21 years and more. Psoriasis cases (n

Pattern of Risks for Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders in the Offspring of Parents With Alcohol Use Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to clarify the components of the familial liability to alcohol use disorder (AUD) by examining parent-offspring transmission in a large Swedish population sample. METHODS: To this end, 1,244,516 offspring in intact families with a mean age at follow-up of 37.7 years (SD=6.8) were examined. Hazard ratios for offspring of parents with AUD were calculated using Cox models for risk of five disorders assessed from Swedish medical and criminal registries: AUD, drug use disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, major depression, and anxiety disorders. Opioid prescription usage and disposal after provider education and SMS-based parent education.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate pain control after outpatient pediatric urologic surgery is important for both providers and caregivers; however, opioid pain medications are often prescribed in excess of utilization. The resultant excess opioid medication has potential to be diverted or misused. While families are instructed to dispose of leftover opioids, a significant proportion may not dispose of leftover medication. We performed a quality improvement (QI) initiative within a tertiary academic care center to examine opioid excess, opioid disposal, and whether a two-component QI intervention of provi

Parental incarceration in childhood and violent delinquent behaviors in adulthood: Race/ethnicity and sex differences.

Studies indicate parental incarceration (PI) is associated with children's externalizing behaviors. Fewer studies have examined whether the relationship persists into adulthood, manifesting specifically in violent behavior, and differs by race/ethnicity or sex of the individual exposed to PI during childhood. Wave I and Wave IV National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data where average respondent age was 15.7 and 28.8 years, respectively, was used to expand understanding of PI impact on U.S. male and female violent behavior. PI was associated with fighting, fighting that seri
