From Resources to Beliefs: The Mediating Roles of Parental Educational Involvement in the Association Between Parental Psychological Capital and Adolescents' Academic Self-Efficacy in Shanxi Province, China.

Parental psychological resources are important factors that may impact the academic self-efficacy of adolescents. Drawing on family systems, social cognitive, and psychological capital theories, this study employed a questionnaire survey design to examine the associations between adolescents' perceived parental psychological capital and their academic self-efficacy and to investigate the mediating role of perceived parental educational involvement. Furthermore, father- and mother-related pathways were compared to identify potential differences in both direct and indirect effects. Validated que

Wernicke Encephalopathy Complicating a Distinctive POLG Phenotype With MNGIE-Like Features.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disease caused by variants in the thymidine phosphorylase gene (TYMP), primarily characterized by severe gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms. The complete phenotype of MNGIE has not been linked to any gene other than TYMP. METHODS: We describe two identical twins who exhibited delayed psychomotor development, infantile bilateral cataract, congenital demyelinating polyneuropathy, and severe progressive gastrointestinal dysmotility with recurrent pseudo-obstruction episodes,

Caregiver Feeding Practices and Late-Preschool BMI-for-Age z-Score Trajectories Among WIC-Enrolled Children: A National Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Early childhood is an important period when growth and adiposity patterns emerge and may persist into later childhood. Children enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) face elevated obesity risk. We characterized BMI-for-age z-score (BMIz) trajectories from 24 to 60 months and their child-, caregiver-, and household-level correlates. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the WIC Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-2 (ITFPS-2) public-use dataset. We analyzed 5,583 BMIz observations from 2,247 dyads; adjuste

Why Prevention Needs More Than Individual Empowerment: Reclaiming Environmental Prevention.

Contemporary prevention discourse increasingly defines its mission as "empowering individuals" - building resilience, skills and assertiveness so that people can resist substance use, bullying, abuse, gambling, violence and gender-based harms. Such individual-level (i-frame) interventions can be effective, and several rest on a solid evidence base. Drawing on Chater and Loewenstein's i-frame/s-frame distinction and on classical public-health scholarship from Rose, McKinlay, Marmot and Marteau, this paper argues that the field has drifted into a near-monopoly of the i-frame and sidelined the en

Reducing Early-Life Smoke Exposure as a Preventive Strategy for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis: Results from the PEDIGREE Study.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the environmental impact on multiple sclerosis (MS) is complex because of long disease latency and potential recall bias, especially for perinatal exposures. This study aimed to investigate the association between parental smoking and the development of pediatric MS (PedMS). METHODS: As part of the Italian multicenter PEDIGREE study, the PEQ-IT questionnaire was used for prospective data collection. We enrolled subjects under 18 years with PedMS (2013 Krupp criteria) and disease duration ≤ 5 years from onset, along with matched controls. RESULTS: The study included 11

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Hypertriglyceridemia, and Acute Pancreatitis in an Adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Pancreatic Divisum.

Children with developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may not only develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) due to psychosocial stress and overeating but also experience severe complications such as acute pancreatitis (AP) and hypertriglyceridemia (HTG). Consequently, in pediatric patients with concurrent T2DM and developmental disorders, a comprehensive approach is necessary that includes not only imaging evaluations for AP but also assessments of risk factors such as psychological stress and metabolic abnormalities. We report the case of a 13-year-old male child, with a

Single-cell RNA sequencing uncovers dynamic roadmap during chicken spermatogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Spermatogenesis is a pivotal biological process for the precise transmission of paternal genetic information, governed by a highly complex and dynamically regulated testicular microenvironment. Although mammalian research has characterized germ cell development at the single-cell level, differences in reproductive strategies limit the relevance of these findings to avian species. RESULTS: We employed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze the testes of the "Yufen 1" H line roosters at five distinct developmental stages: birth, rapid testicular development, sexual maturi

Age-related reproductive performance and transcriptome profiling of testis in male blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus.

Catfish farming is the largest aquaculture industry in the U.S., where hybrid catfish produced by channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, I. furcatus ♂, represent > 50% of the harvest. Previous studies indicated a high degree of variation in reproductive performance among individuals. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a connection between paternal age and reproductive success. This study investigated the reproduction of 103 blue catfish males aged 2 to 10 years. Morphometric data were collected, and blood was drawn to quantify testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), o

Perinatal depressive symptoms and received support from health professionals: results from the national FinChildren survey.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depressive symptoms affect one in 10 parents. However, there is a lack of knowledge on issues related to early and appropriate support for depressive parents. The study investigated what kind of support depressive parents need and receive prenatally from health professionals and whether the received support moderates the association between prenatal depressive symptoms and postpartum mental health. METHODS: The FinChildren survey for parents of babies aged 3-6 months (8977 mothers, 5825 fathers) was conducted in 2020. Parents evaluated their current mental health at the

The impact of grandchild caregiving on depression among grandparents: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Grandparents' involvement in grandchild caregiving has become an increasingly common social phenomenon worldwide. Compared with non-caregivers, grandparents' depression may be influenced by caregiving responsibilities. However, existing studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding this association. METHODS: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this scoping review systematically mapped the existing literature on the relationship between grandchild caregiving and grandparents' depression. Eight academic databases were searched, yielding 3,174 records. After four screening

Polygenic and Polyenvironment Interplay in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorder and Affective Psychosis; the EUGEI First Episode Study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple genetic and environmental risk factors play a role in the development of both schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and affective psychoses. How they act in combination is yet to be clarified. METHODS: We analyzed 573 first episode psychosis cases and 1005 controls, of European ancestry. Firstly, we tested whether the association of polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression (PRS-SZ, PRS-BD, and PRS-D) with schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and affective psychosis differed when participants were stratified by exposure to specific environmental fact

Polyethylene and Polyvinyl Chloride Nanoplastics in Human Follicular Fluid and Seminal Plasma: Impact on Fertilization and Sperm Quality.

Plastic pollution is a growing global issue, with nanoplastics (NPs) posing a greater threat than microplastics. Micro/nanoplastics have been detected in various human tissues and bodily fluids, but their impacts on human fertility remain unclear. We used pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) with liquid extraction to detect NPs in the follicular fluid (FF) and seminal plasma (SP) of 51 couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) to investigate the impact of NPs on fertility. In our study, polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were the most frequently detected

Time to incorporate positive experiences and outcomes in psychosis research: genetic differential susceptibility to childhood experiences works for "better and for worse".

Research on gene-environment interactions in psychosis has been guided by diathesis-stress models, which emphasize the role of negative experiences. In contrast, the Differential Susceptibility (DS) model indicates that individuals differ in sensitivity to both adverse and supportive environments. This study replicates and expands an initial proof-of-concept DS study on psychosis by examining whether genetic sensitivity to the environment, indexed by polygenic scores of environmental sensitivity (PGS-ES) and psychotic-like experiences (PGS-PLE), moderated the impact of early-life positive and

Parental Drinking Patterns and Adolescent Alcohol Consumption: Considering the Role of Sex and Developmental Stage.

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that parental behaviors shape adolescents' alcohol consumption, but it is unclear whether mothers or fathers have a more significant impact and how this relationship varies by sex and developmental stage. This study examines the effects of parental alcohol consumption patterns on adolescents in Russia using a large representative sample. METHODS: The study employs pooled data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey-Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE) from 2006 to 2019. The final sample included 25 611 cases of adolescents with the available data on th

Effect of changing sperm donor in the second treatment cycle on the rates of pregnancy, live birth and miscarriage.

Women with longer exposure to paternal antigens, such as a long duration of sexual cohabitation, are known to have a higher chance of successful placentation. However, it is still unknown how repeated exposure to the same sperm donor affects the outcome. We have studied the rates of pregnancy, live birth, and miscarriage among 1077 women undergoing IUI or IVF/ICSI, using either the same donor during two consecutive treatment cycles or two separate donors. Oocyte donation and frozen embryo transfer cycles were excluded. No difference was found either in pregnancy rate or live birth rate when co

Increased susceptibility to prostate cancer biomarkers in the offspring of male mouse progenitors with lifelong or early life exposure to high-fat diet.

Obesity exacerbates hormonal dysregulation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, factors associated with Prostate Cancer (PCa) development. The (epi)genetic influences of obesity may be transgenerationally transmitted, potentially impacting PCa susceptibility in the offspring of fathers with obesity. Thus, we studied the impact of early-life or lifelong exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) on PCa biomarkers [Homeobox B13 (HOXB13) and the Androgen Receptor (AR)] and their correlation with obesity-related markers. Furthermore, we focused on the offspring's PCa biomarkers outcomes and explored their
