Next-generation Solutions: Are Patients Ready for Electronic Artificial Urinary Sphincters for Male Incontinence?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Urology is characterized by continuous innovation. The inception of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RP) marked a pivotal technological advance and further advances in digital treatment options for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are emerging. Our aim was to assess patient willingness to receive an electronic artificial urinary sphincter (eAUS) implant and identify associated concerns. METHODS: Patients who received a first AUS implant (AMS800 system) for post-RP SUI from March 2013 to December 2023 were included. An anonymous survey was used to collect data o

Outcome analysis of noninstrumented anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion in 348 patients.

STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one outcome and outcome-relevant variables (fusion and patient satisfaction) were evaluated in a subset of 348 of 514 patients operated on by one surgeon during a 22-year period, using Cloward's anterior cervical discectomy and dowel interbody fusion. Minimum patient follow-up was 2 years; average length of follow-up was 5.2 years. This retrospective analysis is accompanied by a comprehensive review of the literature (1975-1996) of noninstrumented anterior cervical fusions, excluding fibular grafts alone in the interbody space. OBJECTIVES: To provide data on outcome (with…

Basic Determinants of Disease Knowledge in COPD Patients: Results from COSYCONET.

INTRODUCTION: In many chronic diseases, including COPD, the patients' basic knowledge of the disorder has been shown to be relevant for the course of the disease. We studied which clinical and functional characteristics were related to this knowledge as well as the patients' satisfaction with their knowledge about COPD. METHODS: The study population comprised 645 patients of GOLD grades 1-4 who participated in Visit 6 of the COSYCONET cohort (COPD and Systemic Consequences - Comorbidities Network). The assessments covered a broad panel of clinical and functional characteristics, including gen

Adherence with metreleptin therapy and health self-perception in patients with lipodystrophic syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Although metreleptin replacement therapy was shown to improve metabolic alterations in lipodystrophic syndromes, patients' adherence and satisfaction with treatment have never been evaluated. The 20 patients with lipodystrophic syndromes participating in the French compassionate program of metreleptin therapy filled in a self-questionnaire including an Adherence Evaluation Test, the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM®-vII), and items about physical appearance. RESULTS: 15 patients were women, median age was 32.5 years (IQT 25-75 (16.2;49.5), 18 had diabetes.

Life dissatisfaction burden is associated with a poor surgical outcome among lumbar spinal stenosis patients: a 5-year follow-up study.

Dissatisfaction with life has been found to be associated with somatic health and the short-term surgery outcome in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients. This study investigated the effects of the long-term life dissatisfaction burden on the surgery outcome in LSS patients with a 5-year follow-up. This was a prospective clinical study. Altogether, 102 patients who underwent decompressive surgery completed a set of questionnaires preoperatively, 3 and 6 months, and 1, 2 and 5 years after the surgery. The final study population at the 5-year follow-up included 67 patients. The mean age of the p

Comparing Patients' Perceptions of Dry Eye Disease Between Spanish- and English-Speaking Patients in the United States.

PURPOSE: It is well-known that patients' perceptions of their disease can impact management strategies and disease outcomes. Herein, we compared the perceptions about DED between Spanish- and English-speaking patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 146 patients with DED who underwent ophthalmic evaluation and completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of DED on a 10-point scale during their routine appointments. Perceptions included opinions on the leve

The decline in sexual function, psychological disorders (anxiety and depression) and life satisfaction in older men: A cross-sectional study in a hospital-based population.

This study explored the relationships between the decline in sexual function and psychological burdens and life satisfaction in older men with the aim of providing prospective targets for interventions. From January 2016 to January 2019, we selected 1,326 men aged over 50 years old. We adopted the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), self-estimated intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), the premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT), the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), the Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the satisfaction with life scale and the control, au

Patient safety culture in Norwegian nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety culture concerns leader and staff interaction, attitudes, routines, awareness and practices that impinge on the risk of patient-adverse events. Due to their complex multiple diseases, nursing home patients are at particularly high risk of adverse events. Studies have found an association between patient safety culture and the risk of adverse events. This study aimed to investigate safety attitudes among healthcare providers in Norwegian nursing homes, using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire - Ambulatory Version (SAQ-AV). We studied whether variations in safety attit

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in 2015.

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) represents a recent addition to the refractive surgeon's range of procedures. Although there remains a number of similarities to existing techniques in terms of patient selection and treatment parameters, consideration is required to optimise patient outcomes and satisfaction. Here, we review the selection criteria, contraindications, indications and existing published safety and efficacy outcomes.

To examine long-term outcomes with primary care office-based buprenorphine/naloxone treatment, we followed 53 opioid-dependent patients who had already demonstrated six months of documented clinical stability for 2-5 years. Primary outcomes were retention, illicit drug use, dose, satisfaction, serum transaminases, and adverse events. Thirty-eight percent of enrolled subjects were retained for two years. Ninety-one percent of urine samples had no evidence of opioid use, and patient satisfaction was high. Serum transaminases remained stable from baseline. No serious adverse events related to tre…
