A verbal descriptor incremental pain scale developed by South African Tswana-speaking patients with low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Measuring pain in patients whose home language is not English can be difficult as there may not be a scale available in their home language. Scales devised in other countries may also not be accurate after translation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop and test a new verbal pain descriptor scale in a Tswana-speaking population in South Africa with low back pain. METHOD: Two separate Tswana-speaking groups (20 males and 20 females) of patients with low back pain were asked to describe each of four categories of pain: mild, moderate, severe and worst. They then voted

Viable influenza A virus in airborne particles expelled during coughs versus exhalations.

BACKGROUND: To prepare for a possible influenza pandemic, a better understanding of the potential for the airborne transmission of influenza from person to person is needed. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to directly compare the generation of aerosol particles containing viable influenza virus during coughs and exhalations. METHODS: Sixty-one adult volunteer outpatients with influenza-like symptoms were asked to cough and exhale three times into a spirometer. Aerosol particles produced during coughing and exhalation were collected into liquid media using aerosol samplers. The sa

Fears and Misperceptions of the Ebola Response System during the 2014-2015 Outbreak in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Future infectious disease epidemics are likely to disproportionately affect countries with weak health systems, exacerbating global vulnerability. To decrease the severity of epidemics in these settings, lessons can be drawn from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. There is a dearth of literature on public perceptions of the public health response system that required citizens to report and treat Ebola cases. Epidemiological reports suggested that there were delays in diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of our study was to explore the barriers preventing Sierra Leoneans from trusti

Predictive value of interferon-γ release assays and tuberculin skin testing for progression from latent TB infection to disease state: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Given the current lack of effective vaccines against TB, the accuracy of screening tests for determining or excluding latent TB infection (LTBI) is decisive in effective TB control. This meta-analysis critically appraises studies investigating the positive and the negative predictive value (PPV and NPV, respectively) from a test-determined LTBI state for progression to active TB of interferon-γ release assays (IGRAs) and the tuberculin skin test (TST). METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane bibliographies for relevant articles. After qualitative evaluation, the PPV and

Evaluation of serological diagnostic test systems assessing the immune response to Japanese encephalitis vaccination.

A new commercial anti-Japanese encephalitis virus IgM and IgG indirect immunofluorescence test (IIFT) was evaluated for the detection of the humoral immune response after Japanese encephalitis vaccination. The IgM IIFT was compared to two IgM capture ELISAs and the IgG IIFT was analysed in comparison to a plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT50) and an IgG ELISA. Moreover, the course of the immune reaction after vaccination with an inactivated JEV vaccine was examined. For the present study 300 serum samples from different blood withdrawals from 100 persons vaccinated against Japanese enc

Acute HIV infection - New York City, 2008.

Acute human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (AHI) is a highly infectious phase of disease that lasts approximately 2 months and is characterized by nonspecific clinical symptoms. AHI contributes disproportionately to HIV transmission because it is associated with a high level of viremia, despite negative or indeterminate antibody (Ab) tests. Diagnosis of AHI with individual or pooled nucleic acid amplification tests (p-NAAT) can enable infected persons to adopt behaviors that reduce HIV transmission, facilitate partner referral for counseling and testing, and identify social networks of

[The frequency of human parvovirus B19 infections in Vojvodina].

INTRODUCTION: Human parvovirus B19 is found worldwide. It causes various infections, including fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) in small children, acute arthropathy in adults, transient aplastic crisis and chronic anemia in immunocompromised patients and even fetal infection, which may result in intrauterine fetal death or fetal hydrops. Many of these manifestations of B19 infection are caused by infection of erythroid precursor cells in bone marrow. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this paper was to establish the frequency of parvovirus B19 infection in the population of Vojvodina, as we

Air contaminant exposures during the operation of lawn and garden equipment.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated the Small Engine Exposure Study (SEES) to evaluate potential exposures among users of small, gasoline-powered, non-road spark-ignition (SI) lawn and garden engines. Equipment tested included riding tractors, walk-behind lawn mowers, string trimmers, and chainsaws. Personal and background air quality measurements were collected on equipment operators for carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter <or=2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(2.5)), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and aldehydes. PM(2.5) measurements included continuous and int

Individual reactivity to the open-field predicts the expression of stress-induced behavioural and somatic pain sensitisation.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the fourth most common psychiatric disorder. It is associated with somatic complaints like pain problems. Only a proportion of persons exposed to traumatic events develop PTSD. Several factors, like genetic predisposition, stressor intensity, cognitive appraisal mechanisms and coping processes influence the likelihood of developing PTSD after exposure to a trauma. We used a single session of footshocks in rats, an animal model with a high degree of validity for PTSD, to study whether individual behavioural traits predict long-term stress-induced sensitis

Disparities in diabetes care: impact of mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates that patients with mental health conditions (MHCs) may receive less intensive medical care. Diabetes serves as a useful condition in which to test for MHC-related disparities in care. We examined whether quality measures for diabetes care are worse for patients with or without MHCs. METHODS: This national, cross-sectional study included 313 586 noninstitutionalized Veterans Health Administration patients with diabetes (identified from diagnostic codes and prescriptions) whose Veterans Health Administration facility transmitted laboratory data to a centr

Late-onset allergy-like reactions to X-ray contrast media.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the present review is to describe recent insight into the pathomechanism of the late-onset allergy-like reactions which affect 2-3% of contrast medium-exposed patients, and to give advice regarding prophylactic measures to avoid recurrence of such reactions. RECENT FINDINGS: It is well recognized that the majority of contrast media-induced late-onset reactions are cutaneous reactions of the maculopapular, urticarial and angioedema types, with occasional occurrence of more serious, bullous eruptions. Recent findings strongly indicate that these reactions are T

Laboratory vector competence experiments with yellow fever virus and five South African mosquito species including Aedes aegypti.

Three domestic and peridomestic mosquito species, selected because their prevalence, distribution and ecology favoured them as potential urban vectors of yellow fever (YF) in South Africa, were submitted to numerous tests for infectivity [measured as dose needed to infect 50% of the mosquitoes (MID50)], mainly with a Kenyan strain (BC7914) of the virus. Use of a Nigerian virus strain (TVP1617) did not significantly alter infectivity. After artificial infective blood meals with titres of 7.0-8.0 log10MID50/mL, head squash infection rates (HSIRs) determined by the indirect fluorescent antibody t
