Age is not a barrier to good outcomes after varicose vein procedures.

BACKGROUND: The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) Varicose Vein Registry (VVR) represents a patient-centered database launched in January 2015. Previous work describing overall trends and outcomes of varicose vein procedures across the United States demonstrates a benefit from these procedures. The existing gaps in evidence to support current and future Medicare coverage of varicose vein procedures necessitate further description of clinical outcomes in patients ≥65 years old compared with the population <65 years old. METHODS: This study analyzed prospectively captured anatomic, procedural,

Trends in Australian attitudes towards the availability of take-home naloxone: Evidence from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey.

Take-home naloxone programs are an effective intervention for preventing opioid overdose deaths, yet little is known about public attitudes towards their availability at a population level. This study examined trends in Australian attitudes towards take-home naloxone, sociodemographic correlates of support, and jurisdictional differences, using data from the 2016 (N = 22,271), 2019 (N = 20,998), and 2022-23 (N = 20,251) National Drug Strategy Household Survey. In 2022-23, 41.8% of Australians supported the availability of take-home naloxone, 10.6% opposed it, 16.3% were ambivalent, and 31.3% r

Assessing childhood trauma in New Zealand prisons: Mixed method validation of the CTQ-SF.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has crucial implications for correctional rehabilitation, with higher rates of abuse and neglect being associated with lower rates of treatment completion. This necessitates a valid screening tool for prison-based rehabilitation programmes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the psychometric properties of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) in a New Zealand (NZ) correctional context and explore participants' experiences completing the questionnaire. PARTICIPANTS: The quantitative study involved 174 men from prison-based rehabilitation programmes (n = 75) an

Chronic Alcohol Consumption Induces Irreversible and Heterogeneous Pancreatic Steatosis in Men: An MRI-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Chronic alcohol consumption is a recognized cause of pancreatic steatosis, though its imaging characteristics in individuals remain undefined. This study investigated the effect of chronic alcohol intake on the pancreatic fat content and distribution in a male population and assessed the impact of abstinence. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 male alcohol drinkers (who consumed >20 g ethanol/day for >5 years) and 142 male non-drinkers were recruited. The pancreatic fat fraction (FF) was quantified using T1- and T2*-corrected double-echo chemical shift magnetic resonance i

Estimating current susceptibility to measles in Australia following sustained measles elimination.

OBJECTIVE: This study estimates Australia's measles susceptibility across all age groups. To our knowledge, this study is the first internationally to combine multiple consecutive serosurvey and population immunisation register data. METHODS: We estimated age-specific measles susceptibility in 2019 using data from nationally representative seroprevalence surveys for people born between 1920 and 1960 (infection-acquired immunity) and those born 1961-1999 (infection/vaccine-acquired immunity). For people born 2000-2018 (vaccine-acquired immunity only), we estimated measles susceptibility from c

Frailty as a predictor of adverse in-hospital outcomes in older patients with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), defined by transient left ventricular dysfunction, is commonly triggered by acute emotional/physical stress. It is recognized as a cause of acute coronary syndrome, particularly in the elderly population, as they are vulnerable due to multiple comorbidities, including frailty, a condition marked by reduced functional reserve and increased susceptibility to stressors. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2021) was performed to identify patients aged 65 and older hospitalized with TCM using ICD-10-CM codes. Patients

National rates of pediatric extremity fractures over a 20-year timespan in Denmark: a population-based descriptive cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous reports on incidences rates of Scandinavian pediatric extremity fractures have varied, as they are often anatomically specific and based on institution-specific findings. To gain knowledge of current and future burden on the healthcare system, a national cohort assessment is necessary. We aimed to assess the proportion and incidence within anatomical distributions of pediatric extremity fractures in relation to age, sex, and time trends. METHODS: We retrieved a 20-year population-based cohort from the Danish National Patient Registry 1999-2018. We included all

Clinical and pathological indicators for predicting disease-free survival after radical surgery in elderly patients with early-stage triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer are underrepresented in clinical trials, and recurrence prediction models tailored to this population are lacking. We aimed to develop a prediction tool using routinely available clinicopathological indicators. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 215 women aged ≥60 years with stage IA-IIB triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma who underwent radical or modified radical mastectomy. Candidate predictors were screened by univariate Cox regression and entered into a multivariable Cox model with backward elimination. A

Effectiveness of Online Suicide Prevention (Gatekeeper) E-module Training Compared to In-person Training for Healthcare Workers: A Randomized Interventional Trial.

BACKGROUND: People with tuberculosis (TB) have a suicide risk up to 25 times higher than the general population. It may be due to stigma, isolation, prolonged treatment, and psychological distress from the disease. Hence, empowering healthcare workers (HCWs) who are involved in TB care with suicide prevention skills is essential. NOVELTY: This study will be integrating suicide prevention into TB care and will be evaluating an asynchronous learning management solution (LMS)-based training model against traditional in-person gatekeeper training for HCWs of high-risk population. OBJECTIVES: Thi

The Use of Technology to Support Cognitive Diversity Among Older Adults.

Older adults represent a remarkably heterogeneous population that is diverse in many dimensions, including cognition. Cognitive diversity includes normative age-related changes in cognition, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and more severe impairments such as dementia. The causes and nature of these cognitive impairments (CIs) are varied, extending beyond MCI and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias to encompass stroke, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury. When developing cognitive support strategies, it is crucial to account for the wide range of cognitive diversity and the d

Assessment of serum concentrations of α-pinene, β-pinene, and limonene in the U.S. population from the 2013-2014 National Health and nutrition examination survey.

Terpenes are a class of ubiquitous chemicals with many potential health benefits and harms. Human exposure to terpenes can occur through pathways such as cleaning products, fragrances, diet, or drug-use. α-pinene, β-pinene, and limonene are known to be present in trees, citrus fruits, herbs, marijuana, and cigarette smoke. With little known about human exposure to these compounds, it was important to characterize the baseline level of exposure for the general U.S. population. Using results for 2213 samples for participants 6-80 years with surplus serum available from NHANES 2013-2014, obtained
