BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common movement disorder and the second most common neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. Dizziness is frequently reported by PD patients, yet there is a paucity of research focusing on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in this population using high-frequency vestibular testing. This study aims to investigate the VOR in individuals with PD using the video head thrust test with and without suppression.
METHODS: Forty individuals with PD and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. According to the Hoehn-Y

AIM: The aim of the present study was to analyze the association between vitamin D receptor (VDR) (rs10735810) gene polymorphism and chronic periodontitis (CP).
METHODS: A total of 100 subjects were recruited for this study, which included 50 CP and 50 healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from the whole blood collected from the subjects. DNA was amplified using specific primers flanking the FokI region of the VDR gene (rs10735810). The amplicon was further subjected to genotyping using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using the FokI enzyme. The genotype obtained based on

Lumnitzera littorea is a rare, conservation-relevant mangrove tree with discontinuous records in southern Vietnam, but population-level genetic evidence remains limited. This study combined nuclear rDNA ITS and ISSR markers to distinguish species-level support from population-level comparisons. Can Gio was treated as the focal population, while Dong Nai, Phu Quoc, and Con Dao were used as comparison populations. The 16 study-generated ITS sequences, deposited as PZ348213-PZ348228, supported species-level separation between L. littorea and L. racemosa, with a between-species p-distance of 0.045

In many animals, a phenomenon is often observed in which behavior depends on population density and many individuals within the group synchronize their state of behavior to some extent, and theoretical studies have suggested that this synchronization phenomenon is adaptive for predation avoidance. Moreover, death-feigning behavior (DF) has been observed as an anti-predator strategy in many animals. There are large individual differences in the duration of DF, and the optimal duration of DF often varies depending on the situation. Therefore, although it is expected that prey may synchronize wit

Air pollution is a major environmental health problem. The study of interaction between air pollution and human will benefit to the human health and well-being of community. Both a model for assessing population relative risk of air pollution exposure (MAPRRAPE) and air pollution concentration methods were applied in a case study to determine the optimal method in evaluating risk of population exposure to Sulfur Dioxide (SO2). The framework for building the MAPRRAPE was described in detail. Then, the spatial patterns of population by demographic characteristics exposed to SO2 from industrial,

INTRODUCTION: "Acute repetitive seizures" (ARS) is a term to describe a condition manifest by multiple seizures occurring over a relatively brief period of time -generally 24 hours- in patients with epilepsy. There is limited information regarding the epidemiology of ARS in the general population.
METHODS: We performed a historical cohort study using data from the United Kingdom General Practice Research Database (GPRD) to identify all incident and prevalent cases of active epilepsy in 2005. From among this group, we identified individuals at risk for ARS. This included those with "catastroph

Millions of dollars are spent annually to prevent infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) without a thorough understanding of the most effective way to allocate these resources. The authors' objective was to determine the allocation of new resources among prevention programs targeted to a population of injection drug users (IDUs) and a population of non-injection drug users (non-IDUs) that would minimize the total number of incident cases of HIV infection over a given time horizon. They developed a dynamic model of HIV transmission in IDUs and non-IDUs and estimated the relationship

Early statistics on the occurrence of cancer of the cervix are unreliable. What is certain is that between 1950 and 1965 incidence rates (IRs) and mortality rates (MRs) fell considerably in most Western populations. Recently, however, rates in the 15-35-year age group of some populations have risen two- to threefold. In some developing populations, especially in South America and Africa, rates are very high--up to eight times those in most Western populations. Risk factors include early age at first intercourse, low socio-economic state, having multiple partners, smoking, being widowed or divo

Repeat expansion disorders (REDs) are a devastating group of predominantly neurological diseases. Together they are common, affecting 1 in 3,000 people worldwide with population-specific differences. However, prevalence estimates of REDs are hampered by heterogeneous clinical presentation, variable geographic distributions, and technological limitations leading to under-ascertainment. Here, leveraging whole genome sequencing data from 82,176 individuals from different populations, we found an overall disease allele frequency of REDs of 1 in 283 individuals. Modelling disease prevalence using g

Locomotor behavior in mammals requires a complex pattern of muscle activation. Neural networks, known as central pattern generators (CPGs) and located entirely within the spinal cord, are responsible for generating much of the timing and pattern required for locomotor movements. Historically, identification of interneuronal components of the locomotor CPG in walking mammals has proven troublesome, primarily because of the difficulty in identifying functionally homogeneous groups of neurons in the spinal cord. Recently, a molecular approach has been used to identify populations of genetically s

Improvements in hemophilia care and antiviral treatments have resulted in increases in median life expectancy for persons with congenital hemophilia A and B. Currently, 2% of hemophilia A and B patients surveyed in US comprehensive hemophilia treatment centers are 65 years of age or older and 15% are 45 years or older. Many of the complications of hemophilia, including intracranial hemorrhage, joint disease, and inhibitor development, increase with increasing age. Hepatocellular carcinoma and end-stage liver disease are increasing in the older hemophilia population due to infection with hepati

To understand the transmission of a vector-borne disease, knowledge of the magnitude of dispersal among vector populations is essential because of its influence on pathogen transfer. The principal vector of dengue, the most common arboviral disease in the world, is the mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.). This tropical and subtropical species is native to Africa but has dispersed worldwide since the XV century. In Argentina, the species was declared eradicated in 1963, but has reinfested the country in recent years. In the present work, we used RAPD-PCR markers to assess the levels of genetic variabil

PURPOSE: To examine patterns of mortality for a population with epilepsy compared with the nonepilepsy population.
METHODS: The study used cross-sectional record linkage, combining an electronic death register with an epilepsy patient register constructed from a variety of routine health data sources collected from 1991 to 1997. The study was conducted in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, U.K., and included all deaths recorded between 1993 and 1996.
RESULTS: There were 352 deaths for patients with epilepsy, 2.0% of all deaths. The crude mortality rates for patients with and without e

BACKGROUND: In light of a new therapeutic era for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), newborn screening has been proposed as a gateway to facilitate expedient diagnosis and access to therapeutics. However, there is paucity of evidence on health outcomes outside the homogenous populations in clinical trials to justify broader implementation of newborn screening for SMA. In this real-world study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of newborn screening coupled with access to disease-modifying therapeutics, as an intervention for SMA.
METHODS: In this prospective, non-randomised cohort study do

This study explored the effects of a comprehensive health-care program (CHCP) on blood pressure, blood glucose, body composition, and depression in older adults living alone. We used a quasi-experimental, two-group, pretest-posttest design. The CHCP consisted of open lectures, health counseling, exercise classes, nutrition counseling, and self-help group meetings at a local senior welfare center. Fifty-eight subjects participated in this study, with thirty subjects in the experimental group and twenty-eight subjects in the control group. Data were analyzed by using the descriptive statistics,

BACKGROUND: Saliva is a complex fluid that lubricates the oropharynx and facilitates chewing, swallowing, and vocalization. Viscoelasticity is critical for the ability of saliva to fulfill these functions. Xerostomia, or a sensation of dry mouth, occurs in 17-26% of the population. Although many equate xerostomia with hyposalivation, high-risk patients frequently report oral dryness in the absence of decreased salivary flow.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine if xerostomia is associated with alterations in the rheological properties of saliva in addition to decreased salivary production.
