We present the rare case of a 42-year-old woman with oligometastatic lung adenocarcinoma in her first trimester of pregnancy who was treated for brain metastases with metastasectomy and intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) using the INTRABEAM® system (Zeiss AG, Jena, Germany). This case underscores the potential of IORT in optimizing cancer treatment while safeguarding fetal health in pregnant patients.

Locally invasive non-metastatic persistent gestational trophoblastic tumours (PGTT) following a non-molar pregnancy occur very rarely. Non-metastatic tumours usually falls in low risk group in WHO scoring system based on prognostic factors. We report a case of high risk non-metastatic PGTT which followed a spontaneous first trimester abortion. Complete remission of the tumour was achieved by chemotherapy EMA-CO regimen.

Three mothers of infants with holoprosencephaly consumed alcohol heavily in pregnancy. We postulate that early alcohol exposure is a possible cause of their malformation. The 3 mothers consumed alcohol only in the first trimester but the first mother continued to take chlordiazepoxide and imipramine throughout the pregnancy. Previous studies have suggested that coccidioidomycosis during pregnancy is a devastating illness associated with high maternal mortality. However, this concept recently has been challenged. We examined the incidence of coccidioidomycosis during pregnancy in Tucson, Arizona, an area endemic for this infection. PROBLEM: Zika virus (ZIKV) has gained public concern for its association with microcephaly in infants born to ZIKV-infected mothers. To reach the fetus the virus must overcome the defense mechanisms provided by trophoblast cells. Additionally, in the first trimester, the integrity of the placenta is critical for fetal protection as damage to differentiating trophoblast can affect placental formation and function. Dandy-Walker malformation is a congenital brain abnormality involving the fourth ventricle and cerebellum. We report on a case of twins discordant for this disorder diagnosed in the second trimester of gestation. The twin pregnancy was revealed to be monozygotic using DNA investigation. To our knowledge, this is the first time monozygotic twins discordant for Dandy-Walker malformation have been described.

A case-control study was performed in Finland to investigate the etiology of the lethal heart malformation, hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). The cases represented all verified HLHS (n = 34) in Finland during 1982-1983, and controls (n = 756) were randomly selected from all babies born during the same period. Ovarian ectopic is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy and reaching up to term is an extreme rarity. It is usually diagnosed incidentally when a cesarean section is done for other obstetric causes.
