Detection of antibodies against surface antigens has applications in diagnosis of many bacterial infections, assessment of immune status and epidemiological studies. In a population of 822 healthy adult volunteers, 2% of the 410 men and 1.5% of the 412 women showed a positive patch test reaction to 0.5% potassium dichromate in pet. Most of the positive reactions (10/14) occurred in the group of 110 offset printers, lithographers and printing plant cleaners with present occupational exposure to chromium. Traumatic ruptures of the subscapularis tendon in children are rare and often missed. In this case report, a 70 kg person landed on a 13-year-old boy with his arm abducted and rotated, causing pain and restricted motion. An MRI showed a total rupture of the subscapularis with avulsion of the minor tubercle and subluxation of the biceps tendon. A cheap, portable automated scorer for the Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100 hue test has been developed. It consists of a light pen, a series of omni-directional bar-codes attached to the reverse of the FM 100 hue caps and a small micro-computer. The print-out includes patient details, a linear histogram of the partial errors by cap position, indication of the peak error positions for congenital colour vision deficiencies and appropriate statistical analysis of the total error score. All the results are available within four minutes of completing the testing procedure.
