Thoracic cage volume and dimension assessment by optoelectronic molding in normal children and adolescents during growth.

PURPOSE: The thoracic spine, the chondral and osseous ribs, and the sternum together make up the thoracic cage. These elements are strictly correlated, although their growth is not synchronous. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive data set of thoracic dimensions and non-invasive volumetric assessment in a large cohort of males and females from early childhood to young adult age. METHODS: In all, 622 healthy individuals (406 girls, 216 boys) aged 6-18 years were consecutively enrolled between 2006 and 2016. All had to be healthy with no history of spinal deformity, or any lu…

Pediatric constrictive asphyxia a rare form of child abuse: A report of two cases.

We present two cases of infants who died under suspicious circumstances. After clinical and legal investigations, non-accidental constrictive asphyxia inflicted by one of the parents was established. The first case presents a to date not yet reported, unique mechanism of trauma. In order to stop his daughter from crying, the father admitted that he sometimes sat on his baby while she was lying on the bed. Occasionally increasing his force by pulling with his hands on the bottom of the bed. In the second case tight swaddling and encircling chest compression was the causative mechanism. In both

Pathological survey on Temnodontosaurus from the Early Jurassic of southern Germany.

Paleopathologies document skeletal damage in extinct organisms and can be used to infer the causes of injury, as well as aspects of related … inflicted during aggressive interactions with conspecifics. When the material is preserved, broken ribs are correlated in most of the cases with traumas elsewhere in the skeleton such as cranial injuries. The range of cranial pathologies in Temnodontosaurus is similar to those reported for extinct cetaceans and mosasaurs, which were interpreted as tra …

Technique in Cleft Rhinoplasty: The Foundation Graft.

Secondary cleft rhinoplasty represents a particular surgical challenge. The authors have identified the deficit in skeletal projection of the cleft-sided piriform rim as an important contributor to the pathology. A graft is described to augment the piriform crest on the cleft side. This foundation graft is suture fixated to the piriform crest after complete release of all soft tissue attachments to the alar base. The foundation graft is articulated with a long alar strut graft, which allows for powerful projection of the cleft-sided nasal tip. An advancement flap of vestibular skin is describe

Elastofibroma: management and surgical outcome.

Elastofibroma is a benign slow-growing neoplasm of soft tissues, originally defined Elastofibroma dorsi because of the typical localization … scle planes and looks like a solid mass, oval, with a pole firmly attached to the periosteum of the ribs and intercostal ligaments, with net margins and a diameter of 5-10 cm. The sides not attached to the chest wall were in continuity with the adipose tissue. The cutting surface was pink-graysh, with fibrous appearance. Foci of cystic degeneration int …

A delayed diagnosis that altered the professional orientation of an athlete with upper limb chronic arterial embolization.

BACKGROUND: Vascular disorders of the upper extremity in young and physically active patients present a complex and challenging problem for the treating physician. Initial presentation may often be subtle and the consequences of misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis or mistreatment can be severe. CASE REPORT: In this report, we discuss a case of a young woman with chronic upper limb ischemia due to an arterial thoracic outlet syndrome in whom even though symptoms persisted over a number of years during which she frequently sought medical consultation, remained undiagnosed until finally presenting w

The growing spine: how spinal deformities influence normal spine and thoracic cage growth.

PURPOSE: This article aims to provide an overview of how spinal deformities can alter normal spine and thoracic cage growth. METHODS: Some of the data presented in this article are gathered from studies performed in 1980 and 1990, and their applicability to populations of different ethnicity, geography or developmental stage has not yet been elucidated. In the present article, older concepts have been integrated with newer scientific data available to give the reader the basis for a better understanding of both normal and abnormal spine and thoracic cage growth. RESULTS: A thorough analysis

Bilateral variation of subclavius muscle resembling subclavius posticus.

During routine anatomical dissection, a bilateral variation of the muscle subclavius was discovered with additional morphological features consistent with the muscle subclavius posticus. Attached medially to the first rib by tendon and to the clavicle by fibrous bands, the long triangular shaped muscle ran dorsal-laterally to attach onto the transverse scapular ligament and the coracoid process. The scapular insertion of the omohyoid muscle was just medial to this muscle, with some intermingling of fibers close to their insertions. In addition, the muscle on the left was split into two heads b

Traumatic heart perforation by a D5 osteophyte: a case report.

Osteophytes are bony outgrowths usually found in the context of osteoarthritis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Even if they are usually asymptomatic, they may present with complications such as spinal stenosis, myelopathy and radiculopathy. We here present the case of a 56-year-old woman found dead from a homicidal traumatic heart perforation by a D5 osteophyte.

Stabilisation of thoracic wall in patients with chest injury.

The authors analyse a group of 38 polytraumatised patients with unstable thoracic injury who were subdued to internal surgical stabilisation of the thoracic wall during the period from 1st October 1994 to 30th September 2001. The average period of controlled pulmonary ventilation (CPV) was 3 days and the average period of hospitalisation at the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Department (AICD) was 10 days. In indicated cases, the authors recommend an active surgical approach in the treatment of patients with unstable thoracic injuries. (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 3.).

[Effect of costal perichondrium on regeneration and remodeling of costal neocartilage].

OBJECTIVE: To provide experimental basis for improving the curative effect of pectus excavatum. METHODS: Twelve rabbits were adopted in this experiment. After the bilateral second and third costal cartilages of the rabbits were resected subperichondrially, their right second and third costal perichondriums were damaged intentionally. Then, the bilateral third costal perichondriums were stitched into a tube-like structure and the second ones were left opened. After 2, 4, 6 of operation, the bilateral second and third neocartilages were measured for their width, and histological character were

Spondylothoracic dysplasia with diaphragmatic defect: a case report with literature review.

Spondylothoracic dysplasia (Jarcho-Levin syndrome) is a syndrome of unknown etiology. We describe a new case with diaphragmatic eventration. Literature review for cases of Jarcho-Levin syndrome with diaphragmatic defects, which were six cases, revealed that renal affection increased when diaphragmatic defects associate the syndrome with pulmonary hypoplasia. Thus, the subgroup of spondylothoracic dysplasia with diaphragmatic defect is a more severe subgroup of the syndrome rather than the other forms of this syndrome. Relating the described anomalies in this case and that of the literature cas

[10-year retrospective analysis of the sequelae of loco-regional treatment of breast cancer].

With a minimum follow-up period of 10 years, the incidence of sequelae after loco-regional treatment of 349 breast cancers remains low, being dominated by lymphoedema. Rare after treatment by irradiation alone, lymphoedema appears more frequently in patients treated by radio-surgical association, in spite of a moderate dose of radiation. If a rigorous technique is carried out, the possibility of achieving satisfactory local control in the axilla with radiation alone without neurological sequelae, therefore brings into question the need for axillary dissection without clinically significant ade
