Ag@C core-shell nano-composites have been prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method and are further explored for protein immobilization and bio-sensing. The electrochemical behavior of immobilized horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on Ag@C modified indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode and its application as H₂O₂ sensor are investigated. Electrochemical and UV-vis spectroscopic measurements demonstrated that Ag@C nano-composites provide excellent matrixes for the adsorption of HRP and the entrapped HRP retains its bioactivities. High levels of metal ions have the potential to cause cellular toxicity through a variety of mechanisms; therefore, cells have developed numerous systems that regulate their intracellular concentrations. The Cus resistance system aids in protection of Escherichia coli from high levels of Cu(I) and Ag(I) by actively transporting these metal ions to the extracellular environment. Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an acquired immunobullous disorder rarely seen in childhood. We report the case of an infant with BP successfully treated with oral corticosteroids. The onset of BP was associated with use of complementary medications and we speculate that these may have been triggering factors.

Nucleolar organizer region proteins, which can be stained and visualized by an argyrophil technique (AgNORs), are markers of cell activities, such as DNA transcription and proliferation, and they are useful for differential diagnosis between benign and malignant tumors. Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (Ag NORs) were counted in biopsies from 203 cases of various lesions of the cervix. The mean number of Ag NORs per nucleus was significantly higher in CIN (4.05 +/- 0.04) and malignancy (5.50 +/- 0.65) as compared to squamous metaplasia (1.74 +/- 0.32) and chronic cervicitis (1.54 +/- 0.42). Adenocarcinomas had higher Ag NOR counts compared to other carcinomas. Estimation of Ag NORs can be helpful in distinguishing benign lesions from CIN and malignancy of the cervix.

109 cases of breast cancer were examined in order to assess correlation between the number and size of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) on one hand and prognosis of the disease on the other hand. Results indicate that an indirect correlation exists between AgNOR counts and survival rate of patients. Cases with short survival were observed having significantly frequent AgNORs larger than 5 microns.

Autometallography was used to localize mercury in rat spinal cord after intraperitoneal administration of methylmercuric chloride (200 micrograms CH3HgCl daily). The enzyme guanine aminohydrolase (guanase) is inhibited by low levels of Pb2+. The inhibition is noncompetitive and the Ki is 3.0 X 10(-6) M. The only other heavy metals that are inhibitory at low concentrations are Ag+, which is 36% more, and Hg2+, which is about 50% less inhibitory than Pb2+. The inhibition of guanase by Pb2+ and Hg2+ is synergistic and the inhibition of the enzyme was readily reversed by EDTA. The relationship of these studies with guanase and to the etiology and treatment of saturnine gout, which appears in humans suffering from lead poisoning, is discussed.
