Impact of and Coping with Post-Traumatic Symptoms of Refugees in Temporary Accommodations in Germany: A Qualitative Analysis.

Due to pre-, peri- and post-migratory stress factors, refugees often experience higher levels of psychological stress than the general popul … atic symptoms primarily through distraction strategies, such as working or learning the language or social interaction. Many reported a sense of mistrust as a result of traumatic experiences. Current stress factors cited included uncertain asylum status, worry about family members and lack of ability to influence living situations. The interactions between the post- …

Efficacy of mobile app-based interactive cognitive behavioral therapy using a chatbot for panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-established treatment for panic disorder, but many fewer patients receive this treatment compared to medication-based therapy. Mobile app-based interactive CBT using a chatbot can increase patient access to CBT. We performed a preliminary study to determine whether short-term use of a newly developed chatbot is feasible and effective for relieving panic symptoms. METHOD: Forty-one patients were randomly assigned to either a chatbot group (n = 21) or control group (n = 20) for a period of 4 weeks. The chatbot group was guided in the use

Intergroup aggression in meerkats.

Violent conflicts between groups have been observed among many species of group living mammals and can have important fitness consequences, with individuals being injured or killed and with losing groups surrendering territory. Here, we explore between-group conflict among meerkats (Suricata suricatta), a highly social and cooperatively breeding mongoose. We show that interactions between meerkat groups are frequently aggressive and sometimes escalate to fighting and lethal violence and that these interactions have consequences for group territories, with losing groups moving to sleeping burro

Enablers and barriers to women's participation in community-based systematic tuberculosis screening in urban slums of Delhi: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Women living in urban slums may face social, gender-related, and structural barriers that influence participation in community-based tuberculosis (TB) screening. Understanding these factors is important for designing gender-responsive active case finding (ACF) strategies in high-burden settings. OBJECTIVES: To explore the enablers and barriers influencing women's participation in community-wide systematic TB screening in urban slums of Delhi. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted in selected urban slums of Delhi where community-wide TB screening interventions usi

Transcriptomic shifts in Microtus ochrogaster neurogenic niches reveal psychiatric-risk pathways engaged by pair-bond formation.

Pair bonding (PB) is a stable affiliative relationship that confers profound behavioral and physiological advantages. The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), one of the few socially monogamous mammals, provides a tractable model for dissecting the neurobiological substrates of social interactions. We previously showed that social co-habitation with mating (SCM) increases cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and dentate gyrus (DG), implicating adult neurogenesis in bond formation. Here, we characterized the underlying molecular programs by bulk RNA-s…

Neural correlates of conflict between gestures and words: A domain-specific role for a temporal-parietal complex.

The interpretation of social cues is a fundamental function of human social behavior, and resolution of inconsistencies between spoken and gestural cues plays an important role in successful interactions. To gain insight into these underlying neural processes, we compared neural responses in a traditional color/word conflict task and to a gesture/word conflict task to test hypotheses of domain-general and domain-specific conflict resolution. In the gesture task, recorded spoken words ("yes" and "no") were presented simultaneously with video recordings of actors performing one of the following

Physiological changes of growth hormone during lactation in pup rats artificially reared.

During the lactation period, rat pups are fed by the dam, and the patterns of mother-pup interaction change during this period. Additionally, there are changes in feeding; first, mother´s milk is the only food needed for sustenance, and later, it is combined with solid food and water. GH serum concentrations depend on both maternal-pup interaction and energy metabolism. In the artificial rearing (AR) procedure, pups are deprived of mother-pup interaction, and the feeding pattern is controlled. This rearing paradigm has been used in rats to analyze the effects of maternal deprivation on social

Wake Up and Smell the Infected Bees: Volatile Cues of Vairimorpha Infection in Honey Bees.

Infection can alter volatile organic compounds (VOCs) across a wide range of taxa, but the effects in adult honey bees remain unexplored. Adult workers are major contributors to colony odour and play a central role in both pathogen transmission and collective disease defence (social immunity). We characterised VOC emissions from Vairimorpha-infected and uninfected worker honey bees over a 14-day infection time series using dynamic headspace sampling and two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS). Vairimorpha spp. are globally important gut parasites linked t

Pessimism or optimism? A tri-spatial analysis of public risk perception bias and its influencing mechanisms: evidence from 31 major cities in China.

BACKGROUND: Public risk perception bias (PRPB) is a critical psychological and social determinant that substantially shapes public health outcomes and the effectiveness of safety governance-particularly during large-scale crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid increasingly complex urban risk landscapes, traditional single/dual-spatial frameworks fail to capture PRPB's multi-source and interactive nature. METHODS: This study develops an Extended Tri-Spatial Prism Model to measure PRPB across 31 major Chinese cities (2017-2023) using multi-source data and explores its spatiotemporal dynamics a

Associations of discrimination, mental health symptoms, and substance use among sexual and gender minority young adults: Differences by type and source of social support.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults display higher rates of mental health symptoms and substance use, partially due to minority stressors, such as discrimination. Social support may mitigate these negative effects, but less is known about which types and sources of support are most beneficial. METHODS: We analyzed 2 waves of survey data among 549 SGM young adults (ages 18-25) residing in Oklahoma and surrounding states. Logistic regressions examined: 1) main effects of discrimination and specific types (i.e., general, SGM specific) and sources (i.e., parent, peer, comm

Successful coordination emerges from aligned self-predictions in a dynamic motor interaction.

A central challenge in understanding joint action is explaining how individuals achieve successful coordination in dynamic, real-world settings. Although coordination is thought to depend on anticipating future events, including the actions of others, the precise contribution of such predictive processing remains unclear, since most existing evidence comes from simplified laboratory tasks that infer anticipation indirectly from reaction times. To address this gap, we studied 70 participants (forming 64 pairs) during solo and joint sessions of a turn-taking ball-hitting task while recording mul

Examining coping among adolescent athletes in an intensive training centre: A profile analysis.

Intensive training exposes adolescent athletes to numerous stressors, presenting both challenges to be overcome and opportunities. The athletes' ability to cope with stress and maintain effective social interactions is essential to preserving well-being and performance. Using a person-centred approach, this study had three objectives: (a) identify the coping profiles of adolescent athletes in intensive training centres, (b) examine the influence of perceived social support on profile membership, and (c) characterise the adaptive nature of these profiles in relation to stress perception, subjec…

Theory of mind skill predicts anticipatory guilt-proneness in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Adaptive management of guilt and shame is regulated by social approach and withdrawal and thus relates to the quantity and quality of our social interactions. People with schizophrenia (SZ) self-report reduced guilt-proneness compared to healthy controls (HC). However, previous studies have not distinguished between anticipatory and consequential guilt, nor between guilty affect and associated action tendencies. STUDY DESIGN: We compared 24 SZ with 24 HC on anticipatory guilt, (TOSCA-3, GASP); consequential guilt (PFQ-2), and empathy and Theory of Mind (ToM). STUDY…
