Natural dynamics and residues of pymetrozine for typical rice-growing areas of China.

Pymetrozine has replaced toxic organophosphate pesticides previously used for controlling pests of rice crops in China. Existing data on its environmental behavior are usually related to studies on artificial plots that do not adequately address the natural dynamics and residues in actual field conditions. Therefore, studies under field conditions were carried out to investigate the natural dynamics and residues of pymetrozine in two typical rice-growing areas in China - Hunan and Guangxi provinces. Samples of paddy soil and water were collected in relation to spraying events in the study area…

Cadmium-Bacteria Complexation and Subsequent Bacteria-Facilitated Cadmium Transport in Saturated Porous Media.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is becoming a significant environmental concern due to its persistency in soil. In the subsurface, the fate and transport of Cd are significantly affected by the presence of organic carriers, including bacteria, which are ubiquitous. In this research, facilitated Cd transport by four different bacterial strains in zeolite was investigated by column experiments under three different Cd introduction scenarios (i.e., a Cd and bacteria mixture, Cd and bacteria introduced separately but simultaneously, and Cd added to the column, followed by bacterial flushing), through w…

Land application of mine water causes minimal uranium loss offsite in the wet-dry tropics: Ranger Uranium Mine, Northern Territory, Australia.

Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) is situated in the wet-dry tropics of Northern Australia. Land application (irrigation) of stockpile (ore and waste) runoff water to natural woodland on the mine lease is a key part of water management at the mine. Consequently, the soil in these Land Application Areas (LAAs) presents a range of uranium (U) and other metals concentrations. Knowledge of seasonal and temporal changes in soil U and physicochemical parameters at RUM LAAs is important to develop suitable management and rehabilitation strategies. Therefore, soil samples were collected from low, medium, high…

Seasonal Flooding Disrupts Expected Depth-Dependent Patterns of Mineral Associated Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Across Land Uses.

Approximately 25%-70% of soil organic matter (OM) is stored below 30 cm, rendering subsoil OM cycling an important control on OM persistence. With climate change, soils are experiencing new pedoclimatic disturbances like seasonal flooding that can destabilize mineral associated organic matter (MAOM) and undermine carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) persistence. Our current understanding of how OM cycles down the soil profile is largely based on well-drained soils. Thus, it remains uncertain if expected depth-dependent trends and subsoil OM persistence differ in soils subjected to seas…

Microstructural and mechanical effects of biochar particle size on clay compressibility and lead immobilization.

The demand for sustainable soil stabilizers has driven interest in soil-biochar mixtures for geotechnical applications such as landfill liners and subgrade systems. However, the role of biochar particle size in governing compressibility, shear strength, and heavy metal immobilization remains unclear. This study examines the influence of fine (FB) and coarse biochar (CB) derived from bamboo on the compressibility, shear strength, and Pb2+ immobilization in clayey soil at dosages of 1-10%. One-dimensional consolidation tests reveal that FB at 10% increased the void ratio by 31.7%, whereas CB red…

Spatial structuring of root-associated bacteria and metabolic landscapes in an endangered cliffside conifer Thuja sutchuenensis Franch.

Understanding how plant-microbe-soil interactions vary across spatial scales is essential for elucidating belowground ecological dynamics, particularly in rare and ecologically sensitive species. Here, we investigated the diversity, function, and assembly of root-associated bacterial communities in Thuja sutchuenensis Franch. along continuous vertical gradients. Through an integrative multi-omics approach, morphological assessment, and soil physicochemical profiling, we uncovered a compartmentalized and spatially structured rhizosphere system. We observed a marked enrichment of soil nutrients,…

Dynamics of methane and other greenhouse gases flux in forest ecosystems in China.

The article examines an important problem of studying greenhouse gas emissions in forest ecosystems. The CH4 emission and absorption dynamics in the soil have been studied based on the physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of forest products. The changes in forest methanogenesis in relation concerning the value of the hydrothermal coefficient have been examined. It was established that the most intensive emission of greenhouse gases was observed within the value of the hydrothermal coefficient (HTC) of 1.8 … 2. For soils with the HTC value of <1.3, almost no increase in greenhouse gas…

Impacts of organic matter content on toxicity of phenanthrene to the collembolan, Folsomia candida.

Returning straw to soil can increase the soil organic matter (OM) content, thus lowering the bioavailability of lipophilic compounds. However, the effects of OM content and its fractions (particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC)) on the toxicity of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to soil invertebrates remain poorly understood. In this study, collembolan Folsomia candida was exposed to a range of phenanthrene (PHE) concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 mg kg-1 dry soil) at four different OM addition rates (0%, 0.25%, 0.35%, 0.5%) for 28 days. At …

Geophagy, iron status and anaemia among pregnant women on the coast of Kenya.

In a cross sectional survey based in an antenatal clinic at Kilifi District Hospital, Coast Province, Kenya, 154 of 275 pregnant women (56%) reported eating soil regularly. Geophagous women had lower haemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations than non-geophagous women (mean haemoglobin level 9.1 vs. 10.0 g/dL, P < 0.001; median ferritin level 4.5 vs. 9.0 micrograms/L, P < 0.001). In multiple linear regression analyses, geophagy was a significant predictor of haemoglobin (beta = -6.4, P = 0.01) and serum ferritin concentrations (beta = -6.6, P = 0.002), while controlling for gestational age …

Identification and evaluation of volatile organic compounds evolved during solarization with almond hull and shell amendments.

Biosolarization is a fumigation alternative that combines solarization with organic amendments to suppress pests and pathogens in agricultural soils. The generation of volatile biopesticides in the soil, stemming from biodegradation of carbon-rich amendments, contributes to pest inactivation. The purpose of this study was to (1) profile volatiles that may contribute to pest control under field conditions and (2) measure volatile compounds that may present nuisance or exposure risks for humans near biosolarized fields where larger-scale anaerobic degradation of residues occurs. Biosolarization …

Experimental study on the effect of environmental parameters on Rn-220 exhalation rate.

Radon-220 is an important isotope of radon. Due to its short half-life, it is highly sensitive to changes in environmental parameters during its exhalation from the surface of the earth, which poses significant challenges for precise measurement and modeling. To study the influence of different environmental parameters on the diffusion rate of Rn-220 from the soil surface, this research used an indoor soil gas collection device to simulate process of Rn-220 exhalation. The RAD7 instrument was used to continuously monitor the changes in the concentration of Rn-220 on the soil surface, and at th…

Selenium-amended biochar mitigates inorganic mercury and methylmercury accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Rice, as a dominant crop in China and Asia, can be a major route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for humans in inland China, especially in those living in mercury (Hg) polluted areas. Soil is the most prominent MeHg accumulation source for rice grains. The development of management practices to reduce MeHg in rice grains is crucial. This study explored the mitigation effect of biochar (BC) and sodium selenite-amended biochar (BC + Se) on MeHg production in paddy soil and accumulation in rice. Mercury-contaminated soil was treated with 1% and 5% of both BC and BC + Se. Soil MeHg concentration …

Methyl and Total Mercury in Different Media and Associated Fluxes in a Watershed Forest, Southwest China.

Mercury (Hg) deposition in the forest ecosystem is a significant source of input for methyl Hg (MeHg) and total Hg (THg) to the subtropical forest field and downstream aquatic systems. Wet deposition, litterfall, runoff, and fluxes with forest soil percolate of MeHg and THg were sampled for two years in a watershed forest of southwest China. Results showed that the depositions of THg and MeHg through litterfall and throughfall were 86 µg m-2 yr-1 and 0.8 µg m-2 yr-1 respectively, with litterfall acting as a predominant route for the input of both THg and MeHg. The estimated fluxes of THg and M…

Degradation of trichloroethylene in wetland microcosms containing broad-leaved cattail and eastern cottonwood.

Remediation of aquifers containing trichloroethylene (TCE) relies primarily on physical extraction of contaminated groundwater and soil. Unfortunately, this is typically expensive and does not always attain the desired treatment goals. In situ bioremediation via natural attenuation is an alternative treatment process in which TCE is transformed by indigenous microorganisms and plants. In this study, TCE was observed in a surficial aquifer that discharges into a wetland. Experiments were undertaken to determine whether natural attenuation of TCE in the wetland was possible. Microcosms were cons…

Genomic adaptations of novel halotolerant bacteria from extreme North Greenland.

Peary Land, northern-most Greenland, is a cold desert region whose soil microbiome remains underexplored. This is the first study to explore the halotolerant soil microbiome of this region with culture-dependent methods. Forty-nine taxonomically diverse bacterial isolates were obtained from dry soil biocrust, surface soil, and permafrost soil. Nine isolates were selected for whole genome sequencing; these genomes showed adaptations to their cold, saline native environment, such as cold shock proteins and a large number of osmoprotectant transporters. The genomes also contained several biosynth…

Whole organism concentration ratios of radionuclides and metals in terrestrial vertebrates of an Australian tropical savanna environment.

Preliminary values of whole organism concentration ratio (CRwo-soil) were derived for terrestrial vertebrates of an Australian tropical savanna environment. Wildlife groups included bird, bat, ground-dwelling mammal and reptile. Sample data for some of the wildlife groups (bird and bat in particular) were limited. The bird and bat CRwo-soil values were generally lower than the ground-dwelling mammal and reptile CRwo-soil values based on the available data. Arithmetic mean CRwo-soil values for two species of native marsupial and two species of non-native placental were not significantly differe…
