[Physical rehabilitation for degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the hip joint in elderly and senile people (3rd stage).].

Despite the numerous non-drug treatment options, a clear strategy for medical rehabilitation of patients with hip osteoarthritis has not been developed. Long-term physical inactivity associated with exacerbation of the disease, with limb immobilization due to injury or joint surgery leads to the development of secondary changes: muscle atrophy, contractures, osteoporosis and other changes in the tissues of the musculoskeletal system, which significantly complicate the restoration of motor function. The aim of the work is to evaluate the effectiveness of a modernized method of therapeutic exerc

Ngā Māuiui Kai: creating Indigenous Māori terms for eating disorders in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Māori (the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand) report higher rates of eating disorders than non-Māori, but access treatment at lower rates. Diagnostic terms lacking in cultural relevance likely contribute to Māori exclusion in eating disorder spaces. Developing terms in te reo Māori (the Māori language) presents an opportunity to challenge eating disorder stereotypes and increase cultural safety in the eating disorder workforce. METHODOLOGY: Guided by a Māori worldview and the practice of wānanga (to meet, discuss, and think deeply about a topic), we present a Māori languag

Impact of amputation of the upper limb and prostheses on perceptions of competence, warmth, and functional abilities.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: This study investigated attitudes that young adults have toward individuals with amputation of the upper limb (AUL). Previous studies have found that people tend to feel sympathy toward these individuals, but they are also perceived as less competent in various situations. However, it is unclear if these perceptions are influenced by factors such as the cause of amputation, the gender of the amputee, whether they use a prosthesis or not, or the type of prosthesis. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: The survey included 469 participants from a university in the Southeastern United Stat

The Media Coverage of Bruce Willis Reveals Unfamiliarity With Frontotemporal Degeneration.

In 2022, Bruce Willis' family released a statement saying that he had been diagnosed with aphasia (an acquired language impairment) and would no longer be acting. Ten months later, the Willis family released another statement indicating that he received a more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). This resulted in an explosion of media coverage, as prominent news outlets scrambled to produce stories describing FTD to a public largely unfamiliar with the disease. The quality of these stories varied widely, and in many cases the relationship between aphasia and FTD was misrepr

Pathogen disgust is associated with interpersonal bias among healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pathogen avoidance is a fundamental motive that shapes many aspects of human behavior including bias against groups stereotypically linked to disease (e.g. immigrants, outgroup members). This link has only been examined in convenience samples and it is unknown how pathogen avoidance processes operate in populations experiencing prolonged and heightened pathogen threat such as healthcare professionals. We examined whether healthcare professionals demonstrate the same link between pathogen disgust and intergroup bias as has been documented among the general population.

Exposing the disability-related hidden curriculum in case-based learning: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities face significant health disparities. Studies show that healthcare professionals harbor negative attitudes towards disability, compromising the quality of care. These attitudes, in unwritten, unofficial, and even unintended ways can be passed from providers to learners in the medical education setting. OBJECTIVE: Using a Critical Disability Studies (CDS) paradigm, the authors uncovered the disability-related hidden curriculum within Case-Based Learning (CBL) and proposed guidelines for promoting a disability-conscious medical education that resists ableism.

Extracellular Matrix Remodeling in Vascular Disease: Defining Its Regulators and Pathological Influence.

Because of structural and cellular differences (ie, degrees of matrix abundance and cross-linking, mural cell density, and adventitia), large and medium-sized vessels, in comparison to capillaries, react in a unique manner to stimuli that induce vascular disease. A stereotypical vascular injury response is ECM (extracellular matrix) remodeling that occurs particularly in larger vessels in response to injurious stimuli, such as elevated angiotensin II, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, genetic deficiencies, inflammatory cell infiltration, or exposure to proinflammatory mediators. Even with substan

Intrathoracic gas effusions in patients with COVID-19.

Current evidence suggests that intrathoracic gas effusions (pneumomediastinum and pneumothorax) may be observed among COVID-19 patients even without mechanical ventilation. Here, we report 9 patients who developed spontaneous intrathoracic gas effusions in the absence of mechanical ventilation. The incidence of spontaneous intrathoracic gas effusions is low at 0.5% in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the absence of respiratory support. Two patients (22.2%) had spontaneous pneumomediastinum, with or without subcutaneous emphysema. Three patients (33.3%) had pneumomediastinum associated with pn

Relationship between hand stereotypies and purposeful hand use and factors causing skin injuries and joint contractures in individuals with Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Skin injuries and joint contractures in the upper limbs are observed in approximately 50 % of individuals with Rett syndrome, respectively. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between stereotypic hand movements and purposeful hand skills, items related to these, and factors that cause upper extremity skin injuries and joint contractures in individuals with Rett syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study in 2020 with families belonging to either of the two largest Rett syndrome organizations in Japan. The comparative effectiveness of metformin and risperidone in a rat model of valproic acid-induced autism, Potential role for enhanced autophagy.

RATIONALE: Risperidone is the first antipsychotic to be approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The potential efficacy of metformin in preventing and/or controlling ASD behavioral deficits was also recently reported. Suppression of hippocampus autophagy was suggested as a potential pathologic mechanism in ASD. OBJECTIVES: Is metformin's ability to improve ASD clinical phenotype driven by its autophagy-enhancing properties? And does hippocampus autophagy enhancement underlie risperidone's efficacy as well? Both questions are yet to be answere

The Notch1/Hes1 signaling pathway affects autophagy by adjusting DNA methyltransferases expression in a valproic acid-induced autism spectrum disorder model.

As a pervasive neurodevelopmental disease, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is caused by both hereditary and environmental elements. Research has demonstrated the functions of the Notch pathway and DNA methylation in the etiology of ASD. DNA methyltransferases DNMT3 and DNMT1 are responsible for methylation establishment and maintenance, respectively. In this study, we aimed to explore the association of DNA methyltransferases with the Notch pathway in ASD. Our results showed Notch1 and Hes1 were upregulated, while DNMT3A and DNMT3B were downregulated at the protein level in the prefrontal corte

The intersection of drug use discrimination and racial discrimination in the management of chronic non-cancer pain in United States primary care safety-net clinics: Implications for healthcare system and clinic-level changes.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians' bias related to patients' race and substance use history play a role in pain management. However, patients' or clinicians' understandings about discriminatory practices and the structural factors that contribute to and exacerbate these practices are underexamined. We report on perceptions of discrimination from the perspectives of patients with chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) and a history of substance use and their clinicians within the structural landscape of reductions in opioid prescribing in the United States. METHODS: We interviewed 46 clinicians and 94 patients,

Maternal LPS Exposure Enhances the 5-HT Level in the Prefrontal Cortex of Autism-like Young Offspring.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced social interactions, impaired communication, and stereotyped behavior. The aim of this research is to investigate the changes in serotonin (5-HT) in the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) of autism-like offspring induced by maternal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were intraperitoneally injected with LPS to establish an autism-like model in their offspring. Offspring prenatally exposed to LPS showed autism-like behavior. The serotonin level in the mPFC of 2-week-old offspring wa

Gestational paracetamol exposure induces core behaviors of neurodevelopmental disorders in infant rats and modifies response to a cannabinoid agonist in females.

Paracetamol (PAR) is an over-the-counter analgesic/antipyretic used during pregnancy worldwide. Epidemiological studies have been associating gestational PAR exposure with neurobehavioral alterations in the progeny resembling autism spectrum disorders and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms. The endocannabinoid (eCB) dysfunction was previously hypothesized as one of the modes of action by which PAR may harm the developing nervous system. We aimed to evaluate possible effects of gestational exposure to PAR on male and female rat's offspring behavior and if an acute injection of WI

A novel naïve Bayes approach to identifying grooming behaviors in the force-plate actometric platform.

BACKGROUND: Self-grooming behavior in rodents serves as a valuable model for investigating stereotyped and perseverative responses. Most current grooming analyses primarily rely on video observation, which lacks standardization, efficiency, and quantitative information about force. To address these limitations, we developed an automated paradigm to analyze grooming using a force-plate actometer. NEW METHOD: Grooming behavior is quantified by calculating ratios of relevant movement power spectral bands. These ratios are then input into a naïve Bayes classifier, trained with manual video observ

Healthy Behaviors Among Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic People Affected by Cancer During the Posttreatment Survivorship: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: There are disparities in health behaviors across racial and ethnic groups. However, limited studies focus on cancer survivors' experiences developing and maintaining healthy behaviors, particularly in non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic people. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the experiences of NHB and Hispanic people affected by cancer in developing and maintaining positive health behaviors beyond a cancer diagnosis. METHODS: The data were collected in a mixed-method study through semistructured interviews with 29 NHB and Hispanic cancer survivors between June and Oc

A scoping review exploring stigma associated with postpartum urinary incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Postpartum urinary incontinence (UI) is prevalent, yet health-seeking behaviours for prevention and treatment are markedly low. Health-related stigma refers to conditions that may be socially devalued and considered deviating from "expected norms" and is a barrier to equitable health care. It may be plausible that stigma is associated with postpartum UI and leads to avoiding health-seeking behaviours, which this scoping review sought to examine and summarize. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping revi

A novel GABRG2 variant in Sunflower syndrome: A case report and video EEG monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Sunflower syndrome is a unique photosensitive epilepsy, characterized by heliotropism and stereotyped seizures associated with handwaving. These handwaving events (HWE) are thought to be an ictal phenomenon, although current data are contrasting. Photosensitive epilepsy occurs in 2%-5% of the epilepsy forms and several pathogenic gene variants have been associated with photosensitive epilepsy. However, the genetic etiology of Sunflower syndrome remains unknown. Antiseizure medications (ASM) efficacious in treating photosensitive epilepsy are valproic acid (VPA) and levetiracetam (LE

Neural representations of anxiety in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a multivariate approach.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by low body weight, fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image. Anxiety may play a role in the formation and course of the illness, especially related to situations involving food, eating, weight, and body image. To understand distributed patterns and consistency of neural responses related to anxiety, we enrolled 25 female adolescents with AN and 22 non-clinical female adolescents with mild anxiety who underwent two fMRI sessions in which they saw personalized anxiety-provoking word stimuli and neutral words. Consistency in brain response patterns
