Leukocyte migration inhibition in recurrent aphthous ulceration.

Leukocyte inhibitory factor (LIF) production in response to streptococcal antigens and oral mucosa was examined as a possible pathogenic mechanism in recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU). Mononuclear cells from RAU patients and controls were stimulated with antigens prepared from two species of streptococci and from oral mucosa. Candida albicans and foreskin were tested as control antigens. There were some statistically significant differences in leukocyte migration inhibition between patients and controls with some concentrations of Streptococcus sanguis (ATCC 10556) and C. albicans, and a tre

Immunological studies on aphthous ulcer and erythema nodosum-like eruptions in Behcet's disease.

Patients with Behcet's disease show an intense delayed hypersensitivity (DH) reaction to a group of streptococcal bacteria. We have attempted to detect deposits of immune complexes and to analyse cytological reactions in the aphthous ulcers and erythema nodosum (EN)-like eruptions. Deposits of IgM and positive fluorescence of anti-streptococcal group D serum were found in vessel walls and sites infiltrated by inflammatory cells. Cytological analysis has revealed that the inflammatory infiltrating cells are mainly composed of activated T-cells and macrophages in association with natural killer

Therapeutic effect of human fibroblast interferon on premalignant lesions arising in oral mucosa. A pilot study.

Human fibroblast interferon (HuIFN-beta) was topically administered to 20 premalignant lesions histopathologically showing epithelial dysplasia such as leukoplakia and lichen planus which arose in the oral mucosa. HuIFN-beta was prepared in the water-soluble gel form containing 2% carboxymethylcellulose, 45% glycelin, 0.1 M citrate buffer (pH 4.5) and 0.2% SDS as stabilizing agents. This preparation was found to be effective for herpetic gingivostomatitis and zostal lesions arising along the intercostal nerve. Thus, the HuIFN-beta preparation (10(4) to 5 X 10(3) IU) was applied to the oral muc…

Cytochemical study of exfoliated cells of oral mucosa. I. The glycogen deposition and keratinization.

Cytochemical studies of glycogen of oral mucosa cells have been made on the smears by freeze-drying and PAS staining. The specimens were obtained from different areas of oral cavity of 77 human subjects and an attempt was made to find some interrelation amoung glycogen deposition, keratinization and inflammation. The largest glycogen deposition was found in the mucosa cells from mouth floor and cheek, a little in those from gingiva and quite a small or no glycogen in those from mucosa of hard palate and tongue. In gingiva the cells showing much more keratinization were less in glycogen content

Amyloidosis: a rational approach to diagnosis by intraoral biopsy.

Amyloidosis and its oral manifestations are briefly described. The techniques for antemortem tissue diagnosis of amyloidosis are reviewed and evaluated. In screening for amyloidosis, biopsy of specific oral lesions (when present) is recommended instead of the traditional biopsy of normal-appearing gingiva. This approach is illustrated with four cases. Although rectal biopsy is generally accepted as the screening technique of choice, it is suggested that intraoral biopsy be considered as an easier, safer, more comfortable, and possibly more fruitful technique. It is advocated that in cases of b

Mikulicz's recurrent oral aphthae: the effect of anti-lymphocyte serum upon the in vitro cytotoxicity of lymphocytes from patients for oral epithelial cells.

Preincubation with rabbit anti-human lymphocyte serum suppressed the in vitro cytotoxicity of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients suffering from Mikulicz's recurrent oral aphthae for oral epithelial cells. Further studies revealed that although the anti-lymphocyte antibody remained bound to the lymphocytes after the pre-incubation procedure it exerted no demonstrable cytotoxic effect and induced a minimal degree of transformation. The mechanisms by which the anti-lymphocyte serum may have suppressed the lymphocytotoxicity are discussed.

Boesenbergia rotunda extract-based mucoadhesive mouth gargle for chemoradiation-induced oral mucositis: A prospective randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-associated oral mucositis (OM) is a prevalent and debilitating complication in patients undergoing cancer treatment, lacking effective preventive and therapeutic options. Boesenbergia rotunda (BR), a traditional medicinal plant, exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate a BR extract-based mouth gargle for the management of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT)-induced OM. METHODS: BR extract was evaluated for cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity. The mucoadhesive mouth gargle was characterized by a

Prevention of Chemotherapy-related Oral Mucositis by Topical Timolol: A Prospective Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial in Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Timolol is a beta-adrenergic blocker that has been shown to be effective in the healing of wounds. Oral mucositis (OM), an acute inflammation of the oral mucosa, is a bothersome side effect of some regimens of chemotherapy in which the oral mucosa becomes ulcerated. The current study aimed to evaluate the prophylactic effects of timolol mouthwash in preventing OM in adult patients receiving chemotherapy compared to the placebo. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind trial was conducted on 30 adult patients receiving chemotherapy regimen, including doxorubicin or 5-fluorouracil (5-

Clinical characteristics, management, and prognosis of pembrolizumab-induced immune-related oral mucositis.

BACKGROUND: Pembrolizumab-induced immune-related oral mucositis (irOM) is a rare and often underrecognized toxicity. This study aimed to systematically characterize its clinical profile, histopathologic patterns, management strategies, and outcomes to support timely diagnosis and evidence-based care. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, WanFang Data, and CNKI was performed using a combination of MeSH terms (e.g., "Pembrolizumab," "Oral Mucositis," "Stomatitis," "Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid," and "Immune-Related Adverse Events") and free-text terms (e.g., "anti-PD-…

Clinicopathological and biobehavioral factors influence the onset and severity of oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer.

Oral mucositis is a debilitating adverse effect of radiotherapy in head and neck cancer. It progresses from erythema to painful ulcerations, often causing infections, nutritional impairment, treatment interruption, and reduced survival. While treatment-related factors are well established, patient-related risk determinants remain insufficiently defined. Thus, this study investigated the association between the onset and peak severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer and their clinicopathological, biobehavioral, and demographic characteristics. To carry

[Ultrasound glossopharyngeal block for oropharyngeal pain management in cancer patients].

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal pain due to oral mucositis and base of tongue tumors is a frequent and highly disabling condition that significantly impacts quality of life. Its management is often complex, involving nociceptive, inflammatory, and neuropathic mechanisms with limited response to conventional therapy. Ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block has emerged as a safe and effective alternative to improve analgesia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pain control using ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block in patients with oral mucositis or base of tongue tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Physical function and symptoms in adult hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients, by severity of oral mucositis: a prospective study.

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a curative treatment for hematological malignancies that aims to restore hematopoietic function. However, it involves significant toxicities, including oral mucositis. Oral mucositis (OM) impairs nutrition, extends hospital stays, and reduces quality of life. Physical function declines post-transplant, but the role of severe oral mucositis in worsening this impairment remains unclear. To compare the differences in physical function and treatment-related symptoms before and after HCT between adult patients with hematologic cancer who did and did not d

Unveiling Alpha Amylase Dynamics in Peri-Implant Crevicular Fluid: A Comparative Analysis across Peri-Implant Health and Disease Spectrums.

This study aimed to evaluate the levels of alpha amylase in patients with healthy dental implants, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 75 implant sites, divided into three groups of 25: peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis. Peri-implant crevicular fluid was collected from each selected implant site and analyzed for alpha amylase levels using an ELISA kit. The resulting alpha amylase concentrations were statistically compared between the groups. The mean concentration of alpha amylase was lowest in healthy si
