Association between diabetic retinopathy and neurodegenerative diseases in the All of Us research program.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly disabling condition associated with alterations in multiple neurobiological systems, including increases in inflammatory and sympathetic function, responsible for maintenance of symptoms. Treatment options including medications and psychotherapies have limitations. We previously showed that transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tcVNS) blocks inflammatory (interleukin (IL)-6) responses to stress in PTSD. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of tcVNS on PTSD symptoms and inflammatory responses to stress. METHODS: Twen

Multimodal Neuroimaging of the Effect of Serotonergic Psychedelics on the Brain.

The neurobiological mechanisms underpinning psychiatric disorders such as treatment-resistant major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders, remain unknown. Psychedelic compounds, such as psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine, have emerged as potential therapies for these disorders because of their hypothesized ability to induce neuroplastic effects and alter functional networks in the brain. Yet, the mechanisms underpinning the neurobiological treatment response remain obscure. Quantitative neuroimaging is uniquely positioned to pro

Teen Dating Violence and Mental Health: a Review.

This paper explores the intricate relationship between teen dating violence (TDV) and mental health disorders among adolescents, a demographic particularly susceptible to such issues due to their critical developmental stage. The study underscores how mental health disorders can serve as both risk factors and consequences of TDV, with depression, suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use, and eating disorders being prominently associated with TDV. The profound and long-lasting repercussions of these mental health issues necessitate a comprehensive strategy to address TD

Imaging of Sports-related Hand and Wrist Injuries: Sports Imaging Series.

Hand and wrist injuries are common occurrences in amateur and professional sports and many of them are sport-specific. These can be divided into two categories: traumatic injuries and overuse injuries. The aim of this article is to review the most common hand and wrist sports-related lesions. Acute wrist injuries are predominantly bone fractures, such as those of the scaphoid, hamate hook, and ulnar styloid. Ligament lesions are more challenging for radiologists and may lead to carpal instability if undiagnosed. Overuse wrist injuries are mainly represented by tendinous disorders, with De Quer

The health diagnoses of homeless adolescents: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness during adolescence impacts negatively upon young people's physical and mental wellbeing. To be effective, programs aimed at addressing the health needs of this population must include knowledge of both the presenting and underlying acute and chronic conditions that characterise this high risk group of youth. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of the international literature for studies that used validated instruments and techniques to diagnose prevalence rates of physical and mental health disorders in homeless adolescents. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies fulfille

[Clinical features and psychopathology of factitious disorders].

Factitious disorders are characterized by self-produced symptoms and a chronic course, sometimes with severe complications. Pathomimia occurs more often in women, even though the Munchausen syndrome is found especially in men. Among the various clinical features of pathomimia, the most frequent are factitious fevers and cutaneous pathomimia. Factitious psychiatric disorders are not rare, such as factitious psychotic symptoms, mournings or post-traumatic stress disorders. The main elements of diagnostic orientation are the odd expression of the reported symptoms, a capricious and disconcerting

HELP@APP: development and evaluation of a self-help app for traumatized Syrian refugees in Germany - a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Syrians represent the largest group among refugees in Germany. Many of them were exposed to sequential traumatizing events including war, escape and post-migration stressors, which significantly increase the risk to develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress and other mental disorders. However, there is a lack of adequate treatment options for traumatized refugees in Germany. Moreover, their access to psychosocial care is often restricted due to legal regulation, language barriers, and unclear cost coverage. We therefore aim to develop a low-threshold supportive self-help app for Syr

[Mental disorders related to persistent negative working conditions].

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common in our industrialised society and inevitably affect the working population. Over the last few years greater attention has been focussed on work-related psychopathologies due to an increasing number of studies regarding workplace bullying. OBJECTIVES: This study reports our observations on patients with mental disorders who came to our Occupational Health Centre because they perceived themselves to be victims of negative working conditions. An indepth analysis of their working conditions led us to the conclusion that many of these disorders were to be at

Biopsychosocial impacts of mother loss on daughters in Australia: Cross-sectional study.

We aimed to describe the biopsychosocial impacts of a mother's death at any stage in life on adult daughters in Australia. A total of 2735 mother-bereaved daughters completed an online survey about their experiences of mother loss and its impacts. We assessed several biopsychosocial outcomes, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged grief disorder (PGD), quality of life (QoL), sleep disturbance, and pain. Using multiple regressions, we examined how mother and daughter's age at the time of death, daughter's levels of maternal and genera

Maladaptive self-appraisals before trauma exposure predict posttraumatic stress disorder.

This study tested the proposal that negative appraisals represent a risk factor for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after trauma. Trainee firefighters (N = 68) were assessed during training (before trauma exposure) for PTSD, history of traumatic events, and tendency to engage in negative appraisals. Firefighters were reassessed 4 years later (N = 52), after commencing firefighter duty (after trauma exposure), for PTSD and depression using the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Scale (E. B. Foa, L. Cashman, L. Jaycox, & K. Perry, 1997) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Version 2; A.

Developmental trauma, complex PTSD, and the current proposal of DSM-5.

This paper evaluates representation of clinical consequences of developmental psychological trauma in the current proposal of DSM-5. Despite intensive efforts by its proponents for two decades, it is not known yet if Complex PTSD will take a place in the final version of DSM-5. Recognition of dissociative character of several symptom dimensions and introduction of items about negative affects such as shame and guilt imply an indirect improvement toward better coverage of the consequences of developmental trauma in the existing category of PTSD. As disorders with highest prevalence of chronic t

Edaravone: Advances on cytoprotective effects, pharmacological properties, and mechanisms of action.

Neurological diseases often lead to life-altering consequences, underscoring the urgent need for therapies that can reverse or mitigate their effects. Effective management of neurological disorders necessitates a thorough understanding of the common pathological mechanisms driving their onset and progression. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress stand out as critical contributors to neuronal damage, implicated in traumatic brain injury, stroke, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Disruptions in energy metabolism lead to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and elevate the level

Nicotine in Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence.

Nicotine, a psychoactive compound primarily known for its role in tobacco addiction, has attracted increasing interest for its neuromodulatory and neuroprotective properties. Acting predominantly through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, nicotine influences multiple neurotransmitter systems, modulates neuroinflammation, and supports synaptic plasticity. These mechanisms may be therapeutically relevant in disorders characterized by neurodegeneration or disrupted neurocircuitry, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depressi
