Arthroscopic Tenodesis of the Long Head Biceps Tendon Using a Double Lasso-Loop Suture Anchor Configuration.

Multiple different techniques exist for performing a biceps tenodesis, and the literature has yet to define a particular technique as superior with respect to outcomes. Factors as the center of various clinical and biomechanical studies include analyzing arthroscopic versus open techniques, optimal fixation sites, and the use specific fixation devices (i.e., anchor, screw). This article details an all-arthroscopic approach for proximal tenodesis of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) using a 2-portal method in a minimally invasive manner. Optimal biomechanical fixation of the LHBT is ach

Adaptive, Tendon-Driven, Affordable Prostheses for Partial Hand Amputations: On Body-Powered and Motor Driven Implementations.

Adaptive, tendon-driven and affordable prosthetic devices have received an increased interest over the last decades. Prosthetic devices range from body-powered solutions to fully actuated systems. Despite the significant progress in the field, most existing solutions are expensive, heavy, and bulky, or they cannot be used for partial hand amputations. In this paper, we focus on the development of adaptive, tendon-driven, glove-based, affordable prostheses for partial hand amputations and we propose two compact and lightweight devices (a body powered and a motor driven version). The efficiency

Ultrasound-Based Optimal Parameter Estimation Improves Assessment of Calf Muscle-Tendon Interaction During Walking.

We present and evaluate a new approach to estimate calf muscle-tendon parameters and calculate calf muscle-tendon function during walking. We used motion analysis, ultrasound, and EMG data of the calf muscles collected in six young and six older adults during treadmill walking as inputs to a new optimal estimation algorithm. We used estimated parameters or scaled generic parameters in an existing approach to calculate muscle fiber lengths and activations. We calculated the fit with experimental data in terms of root mean squared differences (RMSD) and coefficients of determination (R2). We als

T2* mapping and subregion analysis of the tibialis posterior tendon using 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of tibialis posterior tendon changes and appropriate intervention is necessary to prevent disease progression to flat-foot deformity and foot/ankle dysfunction, and the need for operative treatment. Currently, differentiating between early-stage tibialis posterior tendon deficiency patients who will benefit from conservative vs more aggressive treatment is challenging. The objective of this work was to establish a quantitative MRI T2* mapping method and subregion baseline values in the tibialis posterior tendon in asymptomatic ankles for future clinical application i

Volar locking plates not touching the flexor pollicis longus tendon appear as prominences on radiographs: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Plate protrusion is a risk factor for flexor pollicis longus (FPL) rupture following volar locking plate (VLP) surgery. However, plate prominence on follow-up radiographs is common. We hypothesised that a VLP that does not touch the FPL tendon can appear as a plate prominence projected over the volar ridge on lateral radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied six current designs of widely used plates in formalin-fixed cadavers. Each plate was placed in six cadavers. We analysed 36 different plate-cadaver combinations. The main aim of plate fixation was to position the plate in

Challenging Scenario of Aortic Valve Tendon Masquerading as Aortic Dissection During Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

The authors report a case of 85-year-old male undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), whose intraoperative transesophageal echocardiogram was concerning for ascending aortic dissection. Further imaging, however, delineated this to be an aortic valve tendon and the TAVR was accomplished successfully. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

Splints, with or without wrist immobilization, following surgical repair of flexor tendon lesions of the hand: A systematic review.

Splints with or without wrist immobilization can be used during the rehabilitation of flexor tendon lesions of the hand. The evidence base for these techniques has not previously been studied in a systematic review. We sought to thoroughly review patient-reported functional outcomes and pain to compare splinting with or without wrist immobilization. Five bibliographic databases were searched. Studies were considered for inclusion if they were randomized controlled trials or observational comparative studies reporting the difference in outcome among patients treated with or without wrist immobi

Supination torque following single- versus double-incision repair of acute distal biceps tendon ruptures.

BACKGROUND: Compared with single-incision (SI) distal biceps repair, double-incision (DI) repair has been described as permitting a more anatomic repair. We hypothesized that DI repair would result in greater terminal supination torque compared with SI repair for acute distal biceps ruptures. METHODS: Patients were included if they sustained an isolated, acute distal biceps rupture repaired between January 2012 and December 2017. Isometric forearm supination torque in 4 positions was measured using a validated uniaxial torque-testing device. Testing took place at least 12 months from surgery.

Regenerative effects of mesenchymal stem cells by dosage in a chronic rotator cuff tendon tear in a rabbit model.

Aim: We investigated the therapeutic effects and optimal dose of human umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) injection in a chronic full-thickness rotator cuff tendon tear. Methods: Rabbits (n = 30) were allocated into three groups (normal saline, G1-Sal; 1 × 106 cells UCB-MSC, G2-Low; 2 × 106 cells UCB-MSC, G3-High). Injections were done into the chronic full-thickness rotator cuff tendon tear 6 weeks after a full-thickness tendon tear of the subscapularis was created. Gross & histologic evaluation and motion analysis was done at pre and 4 weeks post-injection. Result

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) as Predictor for Early Retear and Functional Outcome After Supraspinatus Tendon Repair.

Supraspinatus (SSP) tendon tears represent a common indication for shoulder surgery. Yet, prediction of postoperative function and tendon retear remains challenging and primarily relies on morphologic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based parameters, supported by patients' demographic data like age, gender, and comorbidities. Considering continuously high retear rates, especially in patients with larger tears and negative prognostic factors, improved outcome prediction could be of high clinical value. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) enables an assessment of dynamic perfusion of the SSP mu

Simultaneous spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture with secondary hyperparathyroidism in a patient receiving hemodialysis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Simultaneous spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is a rare orthopedic injury; its initial diagnosis is misdiagnosed in up to 50% of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Early diagnosis and surgical repair are important to achieve an excellent functional outcome. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of simultaneous spontaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism. DIAGNOSIS: Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the quadriceps tendon was completely ruptured at the osteotendinous junction. We then found bilateral quadri

Association between non-cholesterol sterol concentrations and Achilles tendon thickness in patients with genetic familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder that result in abnormally high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, markedly increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and tendon xanthomas (TX). However, the clinical expression is highly variable. TX are present in other metabolic diseases that associate increased sterol concentration. If non-cholesterol sterols are involved in the development of TX in FH has not been analyzed. METHODS: Clinical and biochemical characteristics, non-cholesterol sterols concentrations and Aquilles tendon thickness were determined

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with quadriceps tendon-patellar bone allograft: matched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps tendon-patellar bone (QTPB) autograft is an excellent graft option with good clinical outcome. Use of QTPB autografts have increased because they minimize donor-site morbidity including anterior knee pain, while providing adequate mechanical strength. Although, there were many clinical results about allografts that used in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, it have never been reported about the clinical outcome of ACL reconstruction with QTPB allograft. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcome of ACL reconstruction with QTPB allograft a
