Racial Disparities in Pain Among Women with Fibromyalgia: Secondary Data Analysis of Severity, Interference with Function, and Response to Guided Imagery.

Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by widespread persistent musculoskeletal pain. Mostly prevalent among White women, little is known about FMS in other population cohorts. This study examined secondary data of a racially diverse sample of women with FMS that were collected as part of a randomized controlled clinical trial that examined the effect of a complementary therapy intervention over the course of a 10-week guided imagery intervention to identify demographic, social, or economic differences in self-reported pain. Materials and Methods: The Brief Pain Inventory (BP

Time to Save Time: Beneficial Effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training and the Need to Quantify the Time Potentially Saved by Its Application During Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation.

The main goal of musculoskeletal rehabilitation is to achieve the pre-injury and/or pre-surgery physical function level with a low risk of re-injury. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a promising alternative to conventional therapy approaches during musculoskeletal rehabilitation because various studies support its beneficial effects on muscle mass, strength, aerobic capacity, and pain perception. In this perspective article, we used an evidence-based progressive model of a rehabilitative program that integrated BFR in 4 rehabilitation phases: (1) passive BFR, (2) BFR combined with aero

Challenges in Sun Protection.

Since time immemorial, people protected themselves from solar radiation. Limiting time in the sun by seeking shade or wearing clothing was a matter of course. In the early 20th century, tanned skin - a result of exposure to sunlight - was associated with good health. At the same time, however, one also had to protect oneself against the potential of excessive exposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products for protection against solar radiation became available. In the years to follow and up to the recent past, a vast number of different sunscreen filters were developed a

Anxiety and Motion Sickness Susceptibility May Influence the Ability to Update Orientation in the Horizontal Plane of Healthy Subjects.

Few studies have evaluated the influence of idiosyncrasies that may influence the judgment of space-time orientation after passive motion. We designed a study to assess the influence of anxiety/depression (which may distort time perception), motion sickness susceptibility (which has been related to vestibular function, disorientation, and to the velocity storage mechanism), and personal habits on the ability to update orientation, after passive rotations in the horizontal plane. Eighty-one healthy adults (22-64 years old) accepted to participate. After they completed an in-house general health…

Postoperative neurosensory impairment perception using ultrasonic BoneScalpel and conventional rotary instruments after bilateral split sagittal osteotomy.

PURPOSE: Although bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is the most widely used surgical technique for the correction of mandibular dentofacial anomalies, it is associated with lesion of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and unwanted neurosensory disorders. The aim of this study was to document the perception of changes in sensitivity and mean recovery time after BSSO, using an ultrasonic BoneScalpel versus the conventional rotary instruments. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study included all patients with diagnosis of skeletal anomaly who underwent advancement or setb

Unilateral cervical plexus block for prosthetic laryngoplasty in the standing horse.

BACKGROUND: Locoregional anaesthetic techniques can facilitate certain surgeries being performed under standing procedural sedation. The second and third spinal cervical nerves (C2, C3) are part of the cervical plexus and provide sensory innervation to the peri-laryngeal structures in people; block of these nerves might permit laryngeal lateralisation surgery in horses. OBJECTIVES: To describe the anatomical basis for an ultrasound-guided cervical plexus block in horses. To compare this block with conventional local anaesthetic tissue infiltration in horses undergoing standing prosthetic lary

Assessment of the Quality of Life in Patients After Liver Transplantation as an Important Part of Treatment Results.

INTRODUCTION: Organ transplantation for many patients with end-stage liver disease is a life-saving operation. Progressing at a time and usually irreversible damage to the organ directly leads to many life-threatening complications as well as to progressive deterioration in health and the quality of life (QOL). On the other hand, the assessment of QOL after liver transplantation, apart from the survival analysis, should take into account general health perception, physical activity, a place in the family and in the environment, as well as the patient's social and professional activity. Equal pain-Unequal fear response: enhanced susceptibility of tooth pain to fear conditioning.

Experimental fear conditioning in humans is widely used as a model to investigate the neural basis of fear learning and to unravel the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders. It has been observed that fear conditioning depends on stimulus salience and subject vulnerability to fear. It is further known that the prevalence of dental-related fear and phobia is exceedingly high in the population. Dental phobia is unique as no other body part is associated with a specific phobia. Therefore, we hypothesized that painful dental stimuli exhibit an enhanced susceptibility to fear conditioning when comparing

Comparison of upper limb amputees and lower limb amputees: a psychosocial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Amputation of limb is essential in certain conditions; however, it may have significant impact on the patient's psychological condition. The present study investigates psychological responses of upper limb (UL) amputees versus lower limb (LL) amputees regarding prosthetic adjustment, social discomfort, depression, and body image anxiety. METHODS: Traumatic major amputations of 20 upper and 38 lower extremities of 58 patients who were currently using prosthesis were included. 12 of UL amputations were of dominantly used limb. Seven of the UL amputations, and nine of the LL amputati

Central auditory development in children with cochlear implants: clinical implications.

A common finding in developmental neurobiology is that stimulation must be delivered to a sensory system within a narrow window of time (a sensitive period) during development in order for that sensory system to develop normally. Experiments with congenitally deaf children have allowed us to establish the existence and time limits of a sensitive period for the development of central auditory pathways in humans. Using the latency of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) as a measure we have found that central auditory pathways are maximally plastic for a period of about 3.5 years. If the

Melting after keratoprosthesis implantation: the effects of medroxyprogesterone.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of topical medroxyprogesterone (MPG) following KPro implantation in human subjects in whom donor tissue grafts had been contraindicated by high risk of failure. METHODS: Outcomes of implantation of the Chirila KPro, now known as AlphaCor, were reviewed with respect to postoperative MPG therapy. Ten of 45 (22%) patients had received MPG for a period of 12 months, while 35/45 (78%) had not. MPG treatment was halted because the drug is not approved as an adjunctive treatment of KPro patients. The main outcome measures were the incidence an

Feasibility of off-pump ASD closure using real-time 3-D echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: If surgeons could "see " through blood and cardiac chamber walls, it would ultimately be unnecessary to open the heart or use cardiopulmonary bypass to perform procedures such as atrial septal defect (ASD) closure or mitral valve repair. Conventional echocardiography generates cross-sectional images that are not satisfactory as the only visualization for surgical procedures, and current 3-Dimensional (3-D) CT and echo systems take several minutes to compose and process a single still frame. Recently, however, the first system for real-time 3-D echocardiography has been developed. T

Promoting Adaptation to Caregiving Challenges: A Qualitative Study of Dementia Caregiving Specialists.

Limited evidence describes how practicing dementia caregiving specialists (DCS) facilitate caregiver mastery of dementia-related challenges. This qualitative study was designed to characterize perceptions of a national sample of DCS about the caregiver support they provide and strategies they use to promote caregivers' adaptation to dementia caregiving challenges. Qualitative analysis of interviews with 27 DCS from 11 states indicates the scope of DCS practice ranged from one-to-one and group-based consultation to community education and advocacy. DCS reported providing care at inflection poin
