Mantle cell lymphoma is an uncommon non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In a period of four years, 13 cases of mantle cell lymphoma were diagnosed in our department, comprising 3.1% of all non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed. The mean age of presentation was 52 years with a slight male preponderance. The disease was nodal in twelve and extra-nodal in tonsil in one. Five patients had bone marrow involvement. A recombinant rubella virus E1 (rE1) glycoprotein was produced and some of its chemical and immunological features were characterized. Two animal models were then used to establish that the rE1 glycoprotein and rubella virus particles shared antigenic and immunogenic properties. In the first one, sera from rE1 glycoprotein-immunized BALB/c mice neutralized in vitro rubella virus infection. In the second model, severe combined immune deficient (SCID) mice implanted with tonsil fragments from rubella immune donors and immunized with rE1 glycoprotein produced human anti-rubella virus antibodies.

A case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is reported in which both a TSST-1-producing Staphylococcus aureus strain and a group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal strain (GABHS) were involved. The S. aureus group I strain was isolated from an epiglottic abscess, and the GABHS strain from tonsils and blood cultures. Acute intubation was needed because of obstruction of the airways by swollen and hyperemic mucous membranes in the oro- and hypopharynx together with external edema around the neck. Intravenous therapy with penicillin G was instituted initially on account of GABHS cellulitis and bacteremia.

The spinal cord and brain were examined with magnetic resonance (MR) in 26 patients with idiopathic scoliosis to study the prevalence of spinal cord and brainstem anomalies. During the 20-year period from 1961 to 1980, 17 cases of extranodal head and neck non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in children under 15 years of age were diagnosed in Finland. Eight cases had tumours in tonsils or nasopharyngeal adenoids and 9 cases lymphomas of other sites of the head and neck.
