Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) can be rarely found as a primarily intraosseous lesion and mistaken for other intraosseous or odontogenic pathology. A 65-year-old man had a poorly defined radiolucency distal to the left mandibular second molar root. Periapical radiographs demonstrated a minor radiolucency from 2.5 years prior. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon felt the radiolucency represented periodontal disease, extracting tooth #18. The differential diagnosis of mixed radiolucent/radio-opaque mandibular lesions includes: (1) fibro-osseous lesion, (2) odontogenic and non-odontogenic cyst, (3)

Tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins belong to a large family with many roles in host biology, including restricting virus infection. Here, we found that TRIM2, which has been implicated in cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTD) in humans, acts by blocking hemorrhagic fever New World arenavirus (NWA) entry into cells. We show that Trim2-knockout mice, as well as primary fibroblasts from a CMTD patient with mutations in TRIM2, are more highly infected by the NWAs Junín and Tacaribe virus than wild-type mice or cells are. Using mice with different Trim2 gene deletions and TRIM2 mutant construct

Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) identified a novel loss of function mutation in GARS, a gene linked to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), in a paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia patient with severe chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) due to vincristine. The patient was clinically asymptomatic, and lacked a family history of neuropathy. The effect of the mutation was modelled in a zebrafish knockdown system that recapitulated the symptoms of the patient both prior to and after treatment with vincristine. Confocal microscopy of pre- and post-synaptic markers reveale

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is an inflammatory disease caused by the spread of dental inflammation into the sinus. The long-term administration of antibiotic medicine and/or treatment of the causative tooth are the usual initial treatments. These initial treatments are not always effective, and the reason is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to identify factors of significance that may contribute to the results of the initial treatment of OMS. Thirty-nine patients were studied, divided into two groups according to the results of initial treatment: effective or non-ef

BACKGROUND: Mutations of both the PMP22 and EGR2 genes cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 1. Deletion of the PMP22 gene, results in hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies. More publications exist about the interaction of PMP22 duplication and other CMT-causing gene mutations. In these cases the intrafamiliar discordant phenotypes draw the attention to the possible role of modifying genes. The gene-gene interactions between the PMP22 and EGR2 genes are not well understood.

This case report demonstrates two ways to fabricate model-free implant restorations with the Cerec inLab 4.0 software. Because the patient, a woman with a history of periodontal disease, did not wish to have a removable partial denture, implant therapy was planned for the restoration of her edentulous areas 14/15 and 24/25. In addition, the restoration was to provide functional relief of the natural maxillary anterior teeth. The two implants for the first quadrant were planned as single-tooth restorations. Each was designed as a full contour implant supra-structure using the Cerec Biogeneric a

Periodontitis is an infection characterized by the occurrence of supporting tissue destruction with an episodic nature. Disease progression is often determined by the loss of attachment level or alveolar bone, and sequential probing of periodontal attachment remains the most commonly utilized method to diagnose progressive destruction of the periodontium. The tolerance method has been the most extensive clinical method used in recent years to determine site-specific attachment level changes. There is abundant evidence that major tissue destruction in periodontal lesions results from the recrui

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is among the most common inherited disorders of the peripheral nervous system, and it is broadly categorized as demyelinating type 1 or axonal type 2 based on nerve conduction studies. Mutations in discrete genes usually segregate into a single phenotype. However, mutations in connexin 32 (Cx32) can produce both axonal and demyelinating CMT phenotypes. Although over 300 mutations have been described in Cx32, somatic mosaicism has only been reported once previously. We report a 39-year-old man who was referred for electrodiagnostic evaluation due to a history o

Myoclonus epilepsy with ragged red fibers (MERRF) is one of the major mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. Its main clinical features are myoclonus epilepsy, ataxia, and myopathy with ragged red fibers. Whereas there is a close correlation between MERRF syndrome and the A8344G mutation of mitochondrial DNA, the reverse is not true. In fact, this mutation is also responsible for various other syndromes, such as Leigh syndrome, spinocerebellar degeneration, atypical Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and multiple truncal lipomas. We describe a child with the A8344G mutation of mitochondrial DNA and an u

Tooth agenesis constitutes the most common anomaly of dental development in humans. In the majority of familial cases of hypodontia alone or in association with other anomalies, the mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant. In the present study, we have identified two distantly related consanguineous Pakistani kindreds with an autosomal recessive form of oligodontia with associated dental anomalies. Locus in this case has been mapped on chromosome 4p16.1-p16.3. The maximum two-point LOD score of 2.85 (theta=0.0) was obtained at markers D4S2925 and D4S2285. A maximum multipoint LOD score excee

Localized bone defects may be seen following the extraction of teeth with periapical lesion or advanced periodontal disease, or as a result of trauma. When these regions are considered for treatment with implants, localized ridge augmentation will be necessary. Autogenous bone grafts are used exclusively for ridge augmentation. This case report represents the treatment of a localized edentulous ridge with an upside down osteotomy technique at the symphysis region prior to implant placement. Systemically healthy 21-year-old female patient, who was missing a lower right incisor tooth, was schedu

Retention of teeth into advanced age makes caries and periodontitis lifelong concerns. Dental caries occurs when acidic metabolites of oral streptococci dissolve enamel and dentin. Dissolution progresses to cavitation and, if untreated, to bacterial invasion of dental pulp, whereby oral bacteria access the bloodstream. Oral organisms have been linked to infections of the endocardium, meninges, mediastinum, vertebrae, hepatobiliary system, and prosthetic joints. Periodontitis is a pathogen-specific, lytic inflammatory reaction to dental plaque that degrades the tooth attachment. Periodontal dis

Osteopetrosis is an inherited metabolic disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of bone. This is associated with an osteoclast deficiency. Osteopetrosis is always accompanied by the failure and/or delay of tooth eruption. The present study was conducted to examine in detail the morphological and histological changes of growth of the third molars in the osteopetrosis (op/op) mouse. At the age of 10 days, normal and op/op mice showed no detectable difference in the shape of the third molar follicles. However, the third molars in the op/op mouse became obscured by the proliferation of

The presence of periodontitis in 307 black, Hispanic, and Asian students age 12 to 15 years was evaluated by calibrated examiners in a Los Angeles inner city junior high school. The periodontal status of maxillary and mandibular incisors and permanent first molars was evaluated using the Plaque Index, probing depth, attachment loss, bleeding on probing, tooth mobility, presence of calculus, and caries. Thirty-nine (12.7%) of 307 students had 5 mm or deeper probing depths and associated attachment loss of at least 2 mm and were considered to have periodontitis (PD). The PD group had significant

A retrospective study was carried out to determine the frequency of early periodontal bone loss in 15 year olds as seen in bite-wing radiographs. A total of 468 radiographs of 15 year olds was examined, 246 from 1970-74 and 222 from 1978-80. The alveolar bone crest on the mesial and distal of the first permanent molar teeth was examined for radiographic evidence of early chronic periodontitis. The condition of the adjacent proximal tooth surfaces was also recorded. No significant difference was found between the two groups; 39% of the 1978-80 and 43% of the 1970-74 group showed radiographic ev
